    Paramount targets youth audience

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez
    | 02 June 2014

Viacom's Paramount Channel has launched a new ad campaign in Spain aimed at the youth audience. Tagged Tu Vida Pide Cine (Your Life Calls for Films), the campaign aims to reinforce the channel's brand and image as an alternative DTT channel.

Tapsa/Y&R is in charge of the creative process and the campaign, while the concept and graphic design is by La Gran Aventura. The media supervision will be carried by Viacom's own creative services entertainment south team.

Paramount Channel has been broadcasting in Spain since March 2012, airing movies through DTT and free-to-air TV. The new campaign aims to draw a younger audience segment by increasing the films' value as a means of entertainment.

The ads, which will appear on TV, radio, in printed media and external channels, show people doing daily tasks in a similar style to well-known movie scenes, narrated by actors' voices.

MediaTek launches tablet SOC HEVC video playback support

    Editor
    | 02 June 2014

Looking at the super-mid market and the emerging 4KTV arena, MediaTek has launched a quad-core tablet system-on-a-chip (SoC) that offers full hardware support for the HEVC (H.265) video playback standard.

This means that users of the target quad-core tablets will have optimised and integrated support for H.265 video playback with videos able to play with an average of up to 50% less video bandwidth compared to the previous H.264 standard.

Powered by an ARM Cortex-A7 quad-core processor, the MediaTek's MT8127 supports a full HD 1920x1200 LCD screen display which when combined with MediaTek MiraVision is said to provide an image quality similar to that of a digital TV. By integrating support for MediaTek's connectivity solutions — including Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, FM receiver and GPS — the SoC is said to allow manufacturers to enjoy shorter time-to-market and reduce the printed circuit board (PCB) area and related costs. Moreover, claims MediaTek, the SoC's multimedia features, performance, low power consumption and affordable price point make it the best-in-class tablet SoC for the super-mid market.

"As the super-mid market continues to grow, the demand for high performing yet affordable multimedia features increases exponentially, which is why our quad-core tablet SoC with HEVC video playback is so impactful in the mid-range tablet market," said Joe Chen, general manager of MediaTek's home entertainment business unit. "We believe that the MT8127, with its highly integrated system, rich multimedia capabilities and optimal cost-performance ratio, is the best offer in the mid-range tablet market today."

The MediaTek's MT8127 SoC is slated to power ALCATEL ONETOUCH's PIXI 8 tablet which will be launched later in 2014.

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez
    | 02 June 2014

Portugal's MEO is to broadcast the friendly match between Portugal and Greece in UltraHD using Hispasat's satellite capacity ahead of the World Cup.

The footage will be broadcast through MEO's satellite and over-the-top (OTT) platforms at the event, whichwill be held at the Portuguese capital's MEO Arena.

This will be the first live 4K satellite broadcast made in Portugal and will use Hispasat's 1E satellite located at orbital position 30º West. In order to broadcast via satellite, high efficiency video coding (HEVC) technology will be used at 50 frames per second (fps).

The demand for Hispasat's satellite TV services has increased in Latin America due to the World Cup, and now the company is reinforcing its commitment to Ultra HD content.

The Spanish operator has already launched a 4K channel, Hispasat 4K, which has been presented at the biggest events in the business, including IBC and NAB.

MEO will also broadcast the match OTT using a self-developed UHD application. For this UHD broadcast, to be made on Portuguese Radio and Television (RTP), the Portuguese operator has worked together with Medialuso for image capture and UHD production, Elemental Technologies for HEVC and DASH coding, Hispasat and Samsung.

Weather forecasts sunny for World Cup with MetraWeather

    Editor
    | 02 June 2014

Forecast data and weather presentation services provider MetraWeather has launched a new weather graphics content portal for broadcasters, kicking off with the football World Cup.

The product of a partnership with Red Touch Media and designed to streamline the distribution of ready-to-play weather clips, the MetraWeather ClipStore portal enables news producers and editors to review, purchase and download what are claimed to be high quality, location-specific weather clips.

ClipStore clips are produced on the MetraWeather Weatherscape XT presentation platform that sees use with broadcasters such as the BBC and Nine Network in Australia. Broadcasters and online news agencies may purchase clips ready for programming, or request MetraWeather to upload bespoke, branded clips tailored for their audiences. Alongside the European clips, ClipStore will also offer match-by-match forecasts for the football fixtures in Brazil over June and July 2014. In future, ClipStore will add news clips of weather events and forecasts for major European cities and countries and special events including festivals, live performances and sports tournaments.

"Weather used to be in the news. Now it is the news. Broadcasters recognise that leading their news programming with compelling weather bulletins is a powerful draw-card for viewers and advertisers looking for a highly engaged audience," commented MetraWeather GM Media, Angus Swainson. "In Brazil over June and July, some matches could be played in high levels of humidity that might be draining in high intensity matches. ClipStore will help broadcasters complement their coverage with match-by-match weather bulletins about stadium conditions. [It] offers a light touch, low-cost weather presentation service for broadcasters looking to minimise their investment in graphics software and hardware while delivering high quality weather forecasts."

Liberian National TV wins free-to-air World Cup rights

    Rebecca Hawkes
    | 02 June 2014

State-run Liberia National Television has acquired the public broadcasting rights to show all the action from the Brazil World Cup on free-to-air television and in public spaces.

Any local cinemas or video clubs, or private or commercial television stations who want to rebroadcast World Cup matches will first have to gain approval from the state-owned network operator, Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS).

"This right provides for the broadcast of the tournament by LNTV to free-to-air television, public spaces, such as open stadium and parks, and public viewing centres such as cinemas and video clubs", said Ledgerhood Rennie acting director-general, LBS.

"The management re-emphasises that it will be a violation of the Anti-Piracy Laws, the International Copyright Laws and a violation of the Intellectual Property Rights of FIFA and its partners for any of the named institutions in Liberia to broadcast these World Cup games without the permission of LBS," he added.

Rennie said LBS will take legal action against any Liberian video club, cinema operator or television station that violates their rights.

Sub-Saharan subscription network SuperSport has already acquired the private broadcasting rights for the tournament in Liberia and much of the African continent via the DStv pay-TV platform.

Cable network equipment market slips in the first quarter

    Michelle Clancy
    | 02 June 2014

The combined global CMTS, converged cable access platform (CCAP) and edge QAM market slipped 6% in the first quarter of 2014 from the previous year to $332 million even as more units sold, according to Infonetics Research.

"In a dramatic shift, the vast majority of cable operator spending in the first quarter of 2014 went toward new CCAP equipment instead of the bedrock of cable broadband, CMTS," said Jeff Heynen, principal analyst for broadband access and pay-TV at Infonetics Research. "Cable operators are on a steady path of adding significant channel capacity as part of DOCSIS 3.0, IP video, business service, carrier Wi-Fi, and forthcoming DOCSIS 3.1 rollouts."

Nowhere is the shift to CCAP being felt more acutely than in the North American market, where quarterly revenue dropped 13% despite CMTS and CCAP channel shipments jumping overall by 20%.

Overall, it was another record quarter for CMTS and CCAP channel shipments, owing mainly to a 229% sequential jump in CCAP channel shipments worldwide. CCAP revenue jumped 177% sequentially in 1Q14, while CMTS revenue dropped 76%.

Arris took over the lead for worldwide CMTS and CCAP revenue in 1Q14; Cisco finished second

Casa Systems had another strong quarter, increasing revenue by 13%.

News satire show Redacted Tonight premieres on RT America

    Michelle Clancy
    | 02 June 2014

Redacted Tonight, a political satire show in the vein of the Daily Show, has premiered on RT America, hosted by comedian Lee Camp.

"With reality now seeming like a Shakespearean comedy, perhaps only comedy can truly bring truth to the people, and news is much better consumed with a spoonful of laughter," says Camp. "This show is information and laughter slammed into a 30-minute, no-holds-barred, full-frontal in-your-face fun-sized comedic attack on those ransacking the world."

Every week, Redacted Tonight will provide "comedy news with a punch," covering news stories that the mainstream media failed to mention and new angles on the ones they do.

"ADC native Lee Camp has performed biting political stand-up comedy around the world live and on TV and radio for 17 years," RT America noted. "His 'Moment of Clarity' videos online have attracted a following of millions. George Carlin's daughter Kelly Carlin said Camp is 'one of the few keeping my father's torch lit' and Scotland's The Herald called Camp 'Jon Stewart with teeth'. Correspondents on Redacted Tonight include the fiery comedian John F O'Donnell and cutting RT reporter Sam Sacks. Comedic actor Phillip Chang is also featured. Together they find out what's under the black ink."

Redacted Tonight with Lee Camp is RT's first political comedy show. It joins the line-up of RT America programmes that includes Politicking with Larry King, The Big Picture with Thom Hartman and Breaking the Set with Abby Martin.

ALC appoints Galletta to head Footprint digital marketing

    Michelle Clancy
    | 02 June 2014

Advertising specialist ALC has appointed Gregg Galletta as senior vice president and general manager of Footprint D3, ALC's digital marketing division.

Galletta will continue and expand ALC's digital marketing work, with a particular focus on uniting offline data with digital media in ways that improve its clients' customer acquisition, retention and reactivation efforts.

"Gregg is one of the brightest young minds in the field of digital media and marketing," said ALC chairman Donn Rappaport. "But what really sets him apart from other candidates to lead Footprint is his knowledge of and appreciation for the critical role of offline data in the digital marketing equation."

Since launching his career, Galletta has worked on e-commerce, search engine marketing and most recently cross-screen marketing strategies.

"I am really excited to join the ALC team," he said. "While everyone on Madison Avenue seems to be talking about 'Big Data', there are few who are effectively leveraging offline data to advance digital, let alone cross-channel, marketing. The problem today for many marketers is that online data is inherently weak."

He added: "An offline record, anchored with a street address, enables data hygiene, selectivity and segmentation, enhancement and modelling to a degree just not otherwise possible. ALC's deep experience in data-driven marketing and the unique data assets we've compiled over the past 35 years has us poised to shape the future of data driven digital and cross-channel marketing."

Galletta has a bachelor's degree in business administration from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and an e-commerce certificate from New York University. He replaces Bryan MacDonald, who has been promoted to head Insight-2-Action (i2A) ALC's strategic planning division.
