Xbox One then Chromecast the next blinkbox destinations

    Editor
    | 30 May 2014

As the Tesco-owned online TV and film service embarks on a growth phase, blinkbox has now been made available as a dedicated app for the Xbox One console.

The new app complements the existing app for the Xbox 360 as well as apps for Apple and Android tablets, Sony PlayStation 3, Smart TVs, Windows 8 devices, set-top boxes and PCs and Macs. Once the new Xbox app has been rolled out, blinkbox will subsequently roll out an equivalent product for the Google Chromecast device.

The Xbox One app includes all the features of blinkbox apps on other devices including the ability to browse and buy from a vast catalogue of movies and TV, filter by best sellers, new releases, top selling and genre, and search to find the required film or TV series. The app also supports the Xbox One help functionality to offer relevant customer support based on where they are in the application.

"Our developers are working harder than Hugh Jackman's personal trainer to give customers access to the very latest movies and TV shows on their favourite platforms and devices," said blinkbox managing director Adrian Letts. "We've been on the Xbox 360 for a while and together with PlayStation, we've seen games consoles overtake computers as popular devices for enjoying our service. With Chromecast we love the fact that for £30 it's possible to turn a TV with an HDMI input into a smart TV, meaning blinkbox will be even more accessible to those who want to enjoy the latest movies and TV without being tied into a subscription."

Banijay announces chief creative officer for LA expansion

    Michelle Clancy
    | 30 May 2014

Banijay Group's new TV production division Banijay Studios North America, led by former Endemol North America chairman and CEO David Goldberg, has made its first key hire, as Caroline Baumgard takes the chief creative officer role.

Baumgard will reunite with Goldberg at Banijay Group's recently formed Los Angeles-based production division. Her key responsibilities will include developing original content for the company across multiple genres for the North American market, which will also roll out globally through Banijay Group's growing production capabilities.

Baumgard joined Endemol USA in 2001, where she spearheaded all non-scripted development, including original idea generation and international format adaptation for the US marketplace. Baumgard developed numerous shows during her tenure there, including the two-time Emmy award-winning series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC), and the hit competition series Wipeout (ABC) and Deal or No Deal (NBC). She also developed the syndicated daytime series Steve Harvey (NBCU), which is heading into its third season.

"For more than 12 years, Caroline's skills and expertise in identifying and creating potential future hits were a key driving force in the growth of Endemol USA," said Goldberg. "I'm delighted to be able to work with Caroline to do it all over again with Banijay Studios North America. Her experience, contacts and creative instincts will play a vital role in the development of this exciting new company with the bi-product resulting in the creation of formats that will travel abroad and help fuel the growth of our global business."

Baumgard added: "I was one of the first hires David made at Endemol and we had an incredible 13-year run. Launching Banijay Studios North America together is an exciting opportunity. I look forward to creating original network, syndicated and cable hits as well as adapting and developing Banijay's many successes from around the world."

CDN revenue to break $3BN barrier by end of 2014

    Editor
    | 30 May 2014

Increased appetite for self-selected content, accelerating linear broadcast and entertainment's transition into virtual paradigms will all combine to make 2014 a bonanza year for content delivery networks (CDNs), says AccuStream Research.

The CDN 2014-2017: Operations and Analytics report projects 2014 CDN revenue will grow 19% year-on-year. In 2013 it calculated that the total year's commercial value of media and entertainment video (views and advertising), movie/TV files, music listening and downloads (including self-hosting entities such as Google and Amazon) stood at $3.35 billion, of which $1.05 billion (31.3%) was delivered through CDN contracts.

With rather bullish expectations for the CDN market, the analyst added that it believes that there will be double-digit growth for the CDN market through to 2017 driven by bandwidth pricing stability expanding top line while lowering COGS; marginal performance paybacks; value added services addressing technological complexities such as accounts requiring quality, reach and security at scale; the availability of tools capable of improving MRR and deciphering media formats, device fragmentation and monetisation tools. It also noted that virtual video — including live steaming, VOD and TV everywhere deployment — will be a consumption dynamo.

YouTube begins online video quality tracking service

    Joseph O'Halloran
    | 30 May 2014

Appreciating that levels of experience are not consistent across all providers of its service, US YouTube users can now use a new tracking service to see what online video quality their ISPs are offering.

The Google Video Quality Report is designed to see at what level of video quality an Internet service provider can play YouTube and if a user regularly sees videos buffer, it can offer a better idea of why, as well as tips to make YouTube play better. Alarmingly for some service providers, it also shows the video quality other ISPs in the users' locality area are delivering.

The rating has three levels of performance: HD verified, standard definition and lower definition. The former is reached if a the service can show at once whether a provider can consistently deliver HD video, a resolution of at least 720p, without buffering or interruptions. By contrast if you can watch videos at a resolution of at least 360p, the provider is delivering standard definition and if videos load slowly or frequently buffer, even at resolutions lower than 360p, a provider is delivering lower definition performance.

"Nothing ruins the experience of watching a YouTube video like Magic of Rahat more than seeing the dreaded buffering wheel, which is why we're always working to make videos play smoothly in the best quality possible," commented YouTube product manager Jay Akkad. "And when you can't see what you want, when you want, it's important you know why."

After initial roll out in the US and Canada, the Google Video Quality Report service will be rolled out to other countries in the coming months.

Arabsat locates jamming source in Ethiopian territories

    May 29, 2014 15.08 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Arabsat jammingArab Satellite Communication Organisation (Arabsat) has announced that many TV channels on-board its fleet of satellites have been the subject of intentional jamming for the past week up to today.

Arabsat engineers conducted detailed analysis to identify the source of the jamming, it was confirmed that this interference was originating from Ethiopian territories. It is not clear which broadcasts are targeted this time.

In Febrnuary 2012, Arabsat also said it suffered from jamming from Ethiopia. At the time, broadcasts from several Lebanese channels and Al-Jazeera have been jammed in the past year on the frequencies of Arabsat and Nilesat. However, Ethiopia tried to target the Erithrean Television, as well as broadcasts from Deutsche Welle, Al-Jazeera Arabic and VOA, and it seemed that most other jamming was unintentional.

In a statement, the satellite operator said “Arabsat expresses its resentment for such an illegal act and is surprise for this vandalism as there are no Ethiopian or Eritrean channels broadcast within Arabsat DTH bouquets. This jamming may be aimed at some opponents channels for one of the two countries channels that are broadcasted on board satellites near Arabsat 26 degrees East neighbourhood or on board other satellites which Arabsat has no relation with.

“Arabsat assures to its customers that it is tackling this issue both at national and international level. International Telecommunication Union and Arab League has been informed of this issue and several efforts are underway to mediate the situation.

“Arabsat will follow up the matter and take all appropriate actions to prosecute the culprit at the judicial authorities and the international organisation of frequencies and any legal means that may deem appropriate to ensure that any damage already incurred or to be incurred by the noise, will not go without legal action, regardless of whether this damage is direct or indirect.

“Arabsat is deeply thankful to its respected valued customers for their understanding and supporting for ARABSAT as this intentional jamming is beyond its control.

Kansai TV tests ISDB-T broadcast in 4K/HEVC

    May 29, 2014 18.26 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Kansai TV, a commercial broadcaster in Osaka, Japan, has used Elemental video processing to encode 4K content in HEVC for terrestrial broadcast delivery over ISDB-T to an Ultra HD TV.

The off-air demonstration took place during a 4K educational event hosted by Kansai TV and system integrator CTCSP last week.

ISDB-T covers television, radio and data services enabling terrestrial TV and mobile terminal broadcasts over a single transmitter – in contrast to other standards, such as DVB-T2 which requires two transmitters. Japan, the Philippines, Costa Rica and multiple South American countries are among the regions that have adopted ISDB-T.

During the demonstration, original Kansai TV content featuring the 2014 Osaka International Women’s Marathon was transmitted by very low power from an indoor UHF antenna with 64QAM modulation to a receiving antenna licensed for the demonstration. Elemental encoded the content in 4K/HEVC at full frame rates for transmission at 14.5Mbps over ISDB-T to a decoder for display on a Toshiba Regza Ultra HD TV.

“We could not have done this without Elemental, which has set the pace for the industry in terms of proven 4K/HEVC transmissions and is the only video processing vendor that offers 4Kp60 live encoding with high quality video,” said Koichi Ono, deputy director of the technology promotion division for the Kansai Telecasting Corporation’s broadcast technology department.

“With World Cup 2014 around the corner, pressure is intensifying to realize successful 4K OTA broadcasts,” said Keith Wymbs, chief marketing officer for Elemental. “We are thrilled that media leaders such as Kansai TV are using Elemental video processing to tap into the high quality of 4K to bring sports fans’ experiences to a whole new level.”

The Walt disney logo Germany Switzerland & AustriaThe Walt Disney Company will broadcast its German pay-TV channels Disney Junior and Disney XD with a second soundtrack from June 1, 2014.

Besides the German-language version, viewers will then be able to watch the programmes with the original English-language soundtrack.

The second audio track will initially be offered on pay-TV platforms Sky Deutschland, Entertain from Deutsche Telekom and A1 TV from Telekom Austria. Talks are underway with further platform providers to make the option available.

“The new service is mainly interesting for English-speaking families,” said Ralf Gerhardt, executive programming director & deputy general manager Disney Channels of The Walt Disney Company.
