    Egta sets guidelines for the future of audiovisual measurement

    May 29, 2014 08.06 Europe/London By Robert Briel

    egta guidelineEgta, the association of television and radio sales houses, has published guidelines for the future of audiovisual audience measurement.

    The evolution of audience measurement tools – and as a result, of planning and trading currencies – is one of the keys to the television advertising industry’s success. Numerous initiatives are being taken by industry partners all over the world and egta believes it is important not only to contribute to the debate, but more importantly, to allow broadcasters and their sales house to drive change and lay the foundations for any future solution.

    Over the last few months, egta has worked on a necessary framework for the evolution of audiovisual audience measurement in the television industry. The guidelines published today are the result of working group meetings, communications with members as well as discussions with industry partners.

    These recommendations were approved by egta’s board and are to be considered as a reference framework to help the industry – be it broadcasters, JICs, measurement companies or other actors involved – to develop and implement a most effective audiovisual measurement system that includes content on all existing screens and measures all eyeballs.

    All audiovisual content viewing should be measured regardless of when, where and on which device (ATAWAD) this viewing is taking place. Therefore, in a nutshell, egta recommends:
    · A viewer-centric approach that includes any viewer’s audiovisual contact across any screen in the same database rather than silos tailored to capture individual screens separately;
    · A new measurement set up using the reliable TAM as a basis (i.e. that continues to reflect the existing television currency; providing notions of duration and not only reach) while integrating video census data;
    · A hybrid product: a single currency based on more than one measurement;
    · The harmonisation of advertising metadata of all video content as well as the monitoring of the new measurement by TAM organisations and auditing by a third-party to insure validity of data and full transparency;
    · A system that allows for the possibility to break down the data between devices and to show how multi-screen video campaigns can help drive traffic from one medium to another;
    · The possibility of having different trading and planning currencies if that facilitates appropriate measurements for different purposes.

    Set-top box vendors set for consolidation

    Joseph O'Halloran
    | 29 May 2014

    As their customers, such as AT&T and DirecTV, embark on mega M&As, set top box (STB) vendors will be required to make similar consolidation, a new ABI Research paper asserts.

    In its Set-Top Box and Home Networks Market Research report, ABI said that the set-top box market has generally maintained historical leadership positions based on a cable, satellite or IPTV focus.

    Yet ABI warns that this definition won't meet the needs of the rapidly merging and growing modern operators today who are looking at extending their services over multiple networks. "This mature, yet fragmented market, in which the top five vendors account for about 37% of revenues, is ripe for further consolidation," argued ABI Research practice director Sam Rosen. "We continue to believe that integration of historically separate cable and IPTV providers with satellite set-top OEMs would bear fruit in the increasingly hybrid set-top box world generated with acquisitions such as AT&T's acquisition of DirecTV...Pace performed a significant feat increasing revenues slightly with 10% lower volumes by focusing primarily on the high-end gateway market. This position, along with its focus on services, seems to be yielding fruit."

    Looking at the current composition of the STB arena, it noted that of the top five set-top box vendors—ARRIS, Cisco, Technicolor, Pace and EchoStar—most are heavily weighted to one sector, or, in some cases, have robust proportions serving two of the three sectors. ABI calculates that ARRIS was market leader in 2013 generating with $2.1 million in revenues and shipping about 18.5 million units thanks to a cable and IPTV focus. ARRIS was ahead of Pace, which ABI regards as 'over-weighted' on satellite with smaller cable and IPTV segments. Pace maintained its second position in revenues while falling behind Technicolor from a volume perspective.

    Bangladesh set for first satellite TV service

    Rebecca Hawkes
    | 29 May 2014

    Bangladeshi industrial conglomerate Beximo Group is joining forces with Russian investors GS Group to launch the first direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV company in Bangladesh.

    The launch of the DTH platform – which will offer local and international programming – is planned by the end of the year. It aims to attract 300,000 subscribers during 2015 and subsequently to net another 400,000 subscribers each year, according to its founders.

    "Presently, Bangladesh does not have any legal DTH operator. The viewer's only choice is between a few cable operators and a terrestrial television channel," said Salman F Rahman, vice chairman, Beximco Group.

    Signals of Indian DTH operators are often broadcast illegally without providing Bangladeshi audiences any local TV programmes. "Nevertheless, the demand for a local DTH service is high and Beximco Communications Limited hopes to attract a significant number of subscribers in the country having a population of over 160 million," Rahman added.

    The headend and uplink are to be installed in 2014, paving way for the first DTH broadcasting services in Bangladesh. "Our network will cover the entire territory of Bangladesh," said Sergei Dolgopolsky, foreign projects director at GS Group.

    Yahoo! to cut content owners a better revenue share than YouTube

    Michelle Clancy
    | 29 May 2014

    It's no secret that Yahoo! has designs on the ad-supported online video space, and has reportedly hit upon a savvy idea to woo content creators to its platform and away from arch-rival YouTube.

    According to AdAge, Google takes 45% of ad revenues generated from its partners' content, and now Yahoo! is planning to split revenues "more favourably". It is also rolling out a fixed ad rate - which AdAge said is 50-100% higher than YouTube's average ad rate - for pre-roll ads that run before the uploaded videos.

    For Yahoo!, the idea is part of an on-going push by CEO Marissa Mayer to beef up the video content stable. Yahoo claims 800 million unique viewers per month, and Mayer would like to use that base to capitalise on the online video boom.

    Yahoo! is also following in the footsteps of Amazon and Netflix, by developing a range of exclusive, original TV shows for its streaming video service. It has unveiled plans to produce two original comedy shows for the Web, one a science fiction show called the Other Space, and the other a Bryan Gordon-directed show about a pro basketball team called Sin City Saints. Both will debut next year. They'll mirror a traditional TV format, with each running for ten episodes.

    The company also recently acquired the rights to Saturday Night Live's catalogue and some shows from Comedy Central. The company is also reportedly considering buying video syndicator NDN, and recently inked a deal with Live Nation Entertainment, the biggest concert promoter in the US, to live-stream video of music concerts once a day. The jams will start in July via a new online channel hosted by Yahoo! The video stream will house ancillary content as well, like backstage footage, exclusive access to the tour bus, and interviews before and after the show.
