    Velvet tops Spanish viewing figures

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez
    | 28 May 2014

Bambú's production Velvet has topped Spain's prime time slot, achieving 4.6 million viewers during the final episode of its first season and getting over five million viewers at one point.

The series, broadcast on Antena 3, received a 24% audience share and concluded its first season with an average of 21.8%.

Velvet drove the Atresmedia network to lead Monday's prime time slot over recent months, which was previously led by the reality show Survivor on Mediaset's Telecinco.

The series' success in Spain has been reflected in the international distribution agreements signed at MIPTV in Cannes. Following the path of El Tiempo Entre Costuras and El Secreto del Puente Viejo, Velvet will try to repeat its success on Italian and French TV through an agreement reached between Beta Films, Italy's RAI 1 and France's M6.

Velvet stars Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, José Sacristán and Tito Valverde, among many other well-known names in the Spanish TV fiction sphere. The production centres around a clothes' shop for wealthy Spanish people and is set in 1958.

Sky Go on Sky Italia (mobile)Sky Italia will deploy Thomson’s ViBE VS7000 multiscreen video solution integrated with Inside Secure’s Downloadable DRM Fusion Agent to ensure security for its content distribution services.

Sky Italia will thus be able to provide a high level of security for its Over-the-Top (OTT) services.

“By combining Inside Secure’s studio-approved DRM Fusion Agent with Thomson Video Networks’ ViBE VS7000 multiscreen solution, we have removed a major obstacle that has hampered Web TV and OTT operators from delivering quality experiences to their customers,” said Eric Gallier, VP of marketing at Thomson Video Networks.

Zattoo joins forces with E-Plus in Germany

    May 28, 2014 10.33 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Zattoo-iPad-VoschauNebenSenderliste-Okt11Internet TV platform Zattoo has formed a commercial partnership with German mobile network operator E-Plus.

From June 2014, customers of E-Plus brand Base will receive premium package Zattoo HiQ for €7.99 instead of €9.99 per month if they sign up for a two-year subscription. With the monthly cancellation option, Zattoo HiQ costs €9.99 per month.

The reduced price not only grants access to Zattoo HiQ on smartphones or tablets, but on all internet-capable devices such connected TV sets, PCs and laptops.

Zattoo HiQ contains the free-to-air channels of the two large commercial TV groups RTL and ProSiebenSat.1 as OTT live-streams. The RTL channels are, however, only available via Wi-Fi and not through mobile networks at this stage. The package includes 20 further TV channels in HD quality. Also, no commercials are inserted by Zattoo when switching channels.

Zattoo Base e-plusThe data volume consumed when watching the live-streams is not part of the Zattoo deal with E-Plus, a Zattoo spokesman confirmed to Broadband TV News. It will reduce the data contingent included in the customer’s mobile tariff like any other data service.

After MTV Music powered by Rhapsody and Watchever, Zattoo is the third streaming service collaborating with Base. For Zattoo it marks the first partnership with a mobile network operator.

GfK builds TV momentum with further investment in Genius Digital

    May 28, 2014 11.06 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Tom WeissFollowing a further round of investment, GfK has announced that it has become the majority shareholder in Genius Digital, the specialist in capturing, analysing and applying viewer data for the TV industry.

The current engagement continues the strategic partnership established in September 2013. This investment helps GfK to better meet the increasingly complex analysis needs of pay-TV operators by enriching its powerful audience measurement solutions with market research related service offerings unlocked by Genius Digital’s data capture and analysis technology.

“Working with Genius Digital over the past six months has exceeded our expectations. We are impressed with the strength of the team and their unique solutions for the collection, integration and deep analysis of TV data,” said Nick North, Global Lead, Media and Entertainment, GfK.

“Genius Digital’s innovative technology enables us to offer our customers insights which are most relevant to them, and crucially, the capability to understand what it means for their business. By taking a majority share in Genius Digital, we can leverage strong synergies between our market research business and related offerings from Genius Digital’s own real-time data analysis technology.”

“Since their initial investment last September, GfK have demonstrated that they share our vision and commitment to become a world leader in providing real-time consumer insights and data services to the TV industry. We are delighted that GfK will take a majority position in the business, as it provides Genius Digital with crucial market opportunities,” said Jonathan Sykes, who will continue as Executive Chairman of Genius Digital.

Tom Weiss (pictured above), who continues as CEO, added “We are building significant momentum and this is a further step towards developing a truly end to end service for our customers, utilizing the complementary strengths and industry expertise of both companies.”

Due to the fact that the Genius Digital technology can be used to deliver business benefits to TV operators beyond market research, the company will not be integrated into GfK’s brand and will operate separately under the established name Genius Digital.

    BR-alpha to adopt ARD brand

    May 28, 2014 13.32 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

BR-alphaBayerischer Rundfunk (BR), the affiliate of German public broadcaster ARD serving federal state Bavaria, will rename its educational TV channel BR-alpha into ARD-alpha.

The name change through which the channel aims to raise more awareness on a nationwide scale will take place on June 28, 2014, according to a BR spokesman. The official launch of ARD-alpha will follow one day later at an event in Lindau at the Lake Constance.

The move which marks the first time for the ARD brand to appear in a channel name will also affect the schedule as ARD-alpha will increasingly screen programmes from fellow ARD affiliates. Instead of BR’s local newscast Rundschau, ARD’s flagship news programme Tagesschau will be shown in prime-time.

The responsibility and financing will remain in BR’s hands. Despite the nationwide aspiration, the technical distribution of the channel will not change for the time being, said the BR spokesman. BR-alpha is available via DTT and on analogue cable only in Bavaria.

Households in the other federal states can receive the channel in digital via satellite, cable and IPTV. On the BR website and at Zattoo, BR-alpha is offered as a live-stream.

FilmFlex is one of the largest independent providers of white label VOD services outside the US, with over 90 million transactions enabled since its launch.

In October 2012 , FilmFlex launched EE Film, offering cinema listings and information about theatrical releases, as well as our VOD offering. In April 2014, it launched a TV VOD service for TalkTalk.

Commenting on the deal, Darcy Antonellis, CEO of Vubiquity, said: “Vubiquity remains focused on expanding the breadth of our managed services and technical solutions that today support content and service providers worldwide.

“With the addition of FilmFlex’s proven, carrier-class digital storefront to the AnyVU Cloud platform, Vubiquity offers a complete end-to-end solution for quickly launching and monetizing multiplatform digital video services, while also allowing service providers who prefer a modular approach to choose only those services that fit in with their strategic plans.”

Jeff Henry, FilmFlex’s CEO, said: “FilmFlex’s assets and capabilities, when merged with Vubiquity’s reach and scale, result in a very large opportunity for both companies –and for the customers we share.

The UK’s Freesat has launched the Curzon Home Cinema VOD service on Freetime. Curzon Home Cinema is Freesat’s first film On Demand and pay per view player.

Emma Scott, Freesat’s MD, commented: “We are excited to launch our first film On Demand player, which enables Freesat viewers to watch some of the best independent films available, often on the day they are released in the cinema.

“Freesat already offers great choice with over 200 subscription free channels and the most popular On Demand players. And now Freesat’s Freetime viewers can enjoy a brilliant selection of films including both new releases and classics, yet they only pay for what they watch. The partnership demonstrates our commitment to our viewers to provide the best choice about how, what and when to watch great entertainment.”
