Successful Eutelsat Sealaunch to 3 degrees East

    May 27, 2014 02.47 Europe/London By Donald Koeleman

EUTELSAT 3B has been succesfully launched on Monday 26 May at 21.10 GMT/UTC. The six-tonne satellite was carried on board of a Zenit-3SL rocket operated by Sea Launch AG, from its Odyssey Launch Platform near the Equator in the Pacific Ocean.

After a 1-hour flight, the Zenit-3SL booster released EUTELSAT 3B into geosynchronous transfer orbit. Partial deployment of the satellite’s solar array was carried out successfully within two hours of spacecraft separation.

Eutelsat’s new satellite is scheduled to enter service in July at 3° East. EUTELSAT 3B will replace the EUTELSAT 3D satellite that will subsequently be copositioned with EUTELSAT 7A at 7° East to provide expansion capacity and enhanced in-orbit security for data, telecom and video markets in Europe, Turkey and Africa.

The Airbus Defence and Space built EUTELSAT 3B, using the E3000 platform, has been designed to increase and diversify Eutelsat’s resources and footprint at its 3° East orbital position.

Eutelsat claims this is the first commercial satellite to assemble Ku, C and Ka payloads in a single platform. It will operate up to 51 transponders. Its innovative tri-band configuration will enable customers to select from three frequency bands connected to footprints covering Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Brazil.

Commenting after launch and first manoeuvres, Eutelsat Chairman and CEO, Michel de Rosen said: “We are delighted to see EUTELSAT 3B on its way to 3 degrees East and thank Sea Launch and Energia for this flawless launch. EUTELSAT 3B will be a strong platform for growth at our 3° East orbital position. Its exceptional range of payloads will enable us to tailor our response to customers operating broadband, data, telecom and video services in a vast footprint spanning from Brazil to Central Asia.”

Chile sanctions DTT law after years of bureaucracy

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez
    | 27 May 2014

Chile's DTT regulation has finally come into effect after five years of bureaucratic processing. The digital TV ruling will be immediately applied.

The Minister of Telecommunications, Andrés Gómez-Lobo, its Secretary, Pedro Huichalaf, and Ernesto Corona, president of Anatel, the country's TV regulator, were at the signature ceremony.

Through the new law, Chile will switch off its analogue signal and move over to digital TV under the Japanese-Brazilian standard, ISDB-T. The spectrum reorganisation will also allow the country to increase the free-to-air channels' schedule, improving the TV's picture, sound and interactivity.

According to Chilean president Michelle Bachelet, 40% of new DTT slots are already booked for regional and community media, while two state licences will only be given to cultural and educational channels.

Chile expects the DTT deployment to be completed in five years, after which the analogue TV signal will be switched off.

Bachelet said the TV's national council would have a stronger position in the future and will be in charge of driving the application of the DTT law

Nigerian Television Authority to split in two ahead of digital TV

    Rebecca Hawkes
    | 27 May 2014

The Government-owned Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) is to be split into two independent entities in the build up to digital terrestrial television migration, Nigeria's National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has announced.

NBC director general Emeka Mba says plans for the NTA to establish a new transmission company should be completed in June 2014. It will be licensed by the commission and be based on a public private partnership.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has set June 2015 as the date for global digital migration.

"Heavens will not fall if Nigeria fails to meet the June 2015 deadline, but there are grave consequences for the country," Mba is quoted as saying in the New Telegraph. If the ITU deadline was missed, signal interference from other countries using DTT systems could be a problem, and Nigeria would fail to be competitive in the global digital arena, he warned.

A pilot scheme for the new digital transmission company will be run in Jos, Plateau state, and Mba has urged stakeholders to support the new initiative.

Nineteen companies have already submitted Expression of Interest (EoI) forms, while nine have prequalified, according to HumanIPO
