    All change for Telecom Italia?

    May 26, 2014 09.15 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Telecom Italia MediaTelecom Italia is bracing itself for a change in ownership, with Assicurazioni Generali (AG) and Mediobanca (MB) set to sell their stakes in the company.

Bloomberg reports that AG plans to exercise its right next month to sell its 19% stake in Telco, the investment vehicle that owns 22.4% of Telecom Italia, quoting the insurer’s chairman, Gabriele Galateri.

Quoting an unnamed source with knowledge of the matter, it adds that Mediobanca, which holds a 7.3% stake in Telco, will follow suit.

Telco is also backed by Telefónica and Intesa Sanpaolo, and all four parties agreed last September the right for them to unwind their interests in Telco between June 15 and June 30 or February next year.

Reporting on Telefónica’s position on the matter, El Economista says that it is unlikely to increase its stake in Telco – it currently controls 15% – until the Spanish company meets the requirements of competition regulators to reduce its presence in Brazil.

It adds that none of the other stakeholders in Telco are likely to act against Telefónica.

Deutsche Welle and TVP expand partnership

    May 26, 2014 09.22 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

DeutscheWelleNewlogoGerman international service Deutsche Welle (DW) and Polish public broadcaster TVP will expand their partnership following a co-operation agreement signed between DW director general Peter Limbourg and TVP president Juliusz Braun on May 23, 2014 in Warsaw.

The partnership covers exchange of news items and a new culture programme from Germany in Polish. The two broadcasters will also share archive material and plan to co-produce a documentary to mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Limbourg welcomed the co-operation as the fruition of the European idea. “In the face of a threat to European values it is important that Germany and Poland work together to promote freedom and democracy,” Limbourg said, stressing that “at the same time we also want to reach out to those who do not share our views.” Coinciding with the signing of the agreement, DW and TVP have launched an exchange of TV programmes with Ukrainian broadcaster TVi.

TVP president Braun emphasised that the new agreement bolstered the longstanding partnership with DW and broadened its scope. “We would like to include more high-quality journalism from Germany in our programming,” said Braun. In addition to the magazine Euronachbarn/Eurosasiedzi which the two broadcasters have been co-producing since 2010 they will now jointly develop a culture programme.

The bilingual multimedia project Nachbar – Wie geht’s?/Co s?ycha? s?siedzie?, launched by DW, TVP und MDR in March 2014, will continue as well. DW reports are also available in Poland on the information platforms Onet.pl, Gazeta.pl, Interia.pl and WirtualnaPolska.pl.

    UPC Polska hit by ruling

    May 26, 2014 09.31 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

centrum_upc_head_office_warsawPoland’s Competition Office (UOKiK) has ruled against UPC Polska over fines it imposes on its subscribers.

In a statement, it says that the PLN5,000 (€1,202) penalty for connecting more computers on TVs to the internet than specified in their contracts is excessive.

Furthermore, it does not reflect the damage done to the company by the activities of consumers.

Proceedings against UPC Polska were initiated in October 2013 and the operator is required to make the necessary changes to its terms within three months of the date of the UOKiK’s decision.

In future, fines imposed by UPC Polska will correspond to the monthly fee for each person or entity unlawfully using its services.

Serbian cablecos get in a muddle

    May 26, 2014 09.55 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Serbia flagThe leading Serbian cable operator SBB has resumed the distribution of foreign channels following a mix-up over instructions issued by the Broadcast Agency (RRA).

According to Balkan Insight, they related to three days of national mourning for the victims of floods that have hit the country.

The RRA says that it did not advise cable operators in Serbia to shut down foreign broadcasts during the three days.

Instead, it asked radio and TV broadcasters to “align programmes with the Law on National Mourning”, tailoring their broadcasts appropriately.

Although SBB has now apologized to its subscribers, another cable operator – IKOM – has yet to resume broadcasting foreign channels.

The Serbian journalists’ association UNS believes cable subscribers may be entitled to compensation for the channels they have been unable to receive.

Eutelsat steps up Ultra HD activity

    May 26, 2014 16.14 Europe/London By Robert Briel

ultra-hd-4k-girlEutelsat Communications is scaling up its Ultra HD activity with the launch of Europe’s first demo channel encoded in HEVC and broadcasting at 50 frames per second with 10-bit colour depth (one billion colours – HEVC Main 10 profile).

These three parameters are key for creating a favourable economic environment for Ultra HD and delivering consumers the most rewarding viewing experience on new-generation home displays.

The new channel has been launched at Eutelsat’s Hot Bird video neighbourhood which provides DTH reach of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. The channel is also the first that can be received direct by consumers using the latest 4k TV panels equipped with DVB-S2 demodulators and HEVC decoders.

Ultra HD content, encoded by ATEME that is now broadcasting in Eutelsat’s newest channel includes extracts of a performance in the Royal Chapel at Versailles of Monteverdi’s Vespers conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner. The filming was co-produced by Wahoo Production and Château de Versailles Spectacles with the participation of France Télévisions, using eight cameras operating at 50 frames per second.

“The launch of this new channel is another milestone taking us closer towards the commercial roll-out of 4k TV channels that will propel broadcasting into a new era,” said Michel Chabrol, Director Marketing Innovation and Digital Cinema at Eutelsat.

“Immense progress has been made with partners in the broadcasting chain since the launch in January 2013 of the first demonstration Ultra HD channel on a Eutelsat satellite. HEVC encoding combined with 50 frames per second are the next step the industry has been waiting for and we are delighted to demonstrate this performance through our HOT BIRD satellites.”
