Sky D fires back at Constantin Medien

    May 19, 2014 10.16 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Sky DeutschlandGerman pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland considers the cancellation of the agreement with German media company Constantin Medien to be invalid and wants to stick with the planned complete take-over of production company Plazamedia and the share acquisition in sports broadcaster Sport1 and marketing company Constantin Sport Marketing.

Sky Deutschland still intends to close the transaction based on the binding terms and conditions agreed in December 2013, the subscription broadcaster announced in Munich.

Earlier this morning, Contantin Medien reported that it has decided not to continue the negotiations with Sky Deutschland as no consent could be reached on the conditions of a new multi-year framework production agreement between Sport1 and Plazamedia. This would, however, have been a precondition for closure of the €57.5 million deal with Sky Deutschland.

Spotlight falls on digital terrestrial TV in the Arab world

    Rebecca Hawkes
    | 20 May 2014

The migration to digital TV is the focus of the first Arab meeting to coordinate terrestrial channels currently taking place in Dubai, hosted by the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

"There are certain issues that we must not lose sight of and those include the band allocated for analogue terrestrial TV broadcasting which will no longer be protected after mid of June 17, 2015, and the reassignment of the 700 & 800MHz bands that reduce the number of channels allocated for digital terrestrial TV broadcast," H E Majed Al Mesmar, deputy general manager of the telecommunications sector in TRA, told delegates on the opening day of the meeting.

"Agreeing on a unified digital TV receiver specification for the Arab region and the consensus among Arab countries to find and allocate the required additional channels that compensate the lost ones due to the reassignments of 700 & 800MHz are also required to tackle these issues," he added.

Eng. Tarket Al Owady, executive director of spectrum management and international affairs in the UAE, also spoke of the "many advantages" digital terrestrial broadcasting holds over analogue, including "high quality picture and sound, efficient use of the frequency spectrum, high mobility, multichannel and broadcast media, in addition to better reception of broadcast signals, which also features low cost compared with the broadcast satellite broadcasting."

TRA has collaborated with the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology as well as TV manufacturers and operators such as Abu Dhabi Media Company, Dubai Media Incorporated and Sharjah media to draft information on DTT. It dictates that TV suppliers in the UAE must provide tuning devices for DTT with every television set sold in the country by 2015.

Malawi spends US$8.95MN to implement digital terrestrial TV

    Rebecca Hawkes
    | 20 May 2014

The Malawi Government is spending MWK3.5 billion (US$8.95 million) to convert its terrestrial television network to digital transmission in time for the ITU's global migration deadline of 17 June 2015, according to a government employee.

Dennis Chirwa, digital migration coordinator, said this government policy is to "ensure that migration from analogue to digital benefits the people and leads to more services and broader coverage," during a MultiChoice hosted digital TV conference in Blantyre.

"In Malawi, digital broadcasting will not only improve the consumers' TV experience in terms of better sound and picture quality but also will improve access to information to all people," Secretary for Information and Civic Education Luckie Sikwese was quoted as saying by the Malawi News Agency.

"There is need to prepare the public in order to understand the process in a good manner ... Media is a critical partner when it comes to informing the public," he added.

Chimwemwe Nyirenda, marketing manager for MultiChoice Malawi, confirmed his company would "complement" the government's effort in educating the public about digital broadcasting.

Zee to launch second Hindi entertainment channel in June

    Rebecca Hawkes
    | 20 May 2014

Indian media giant is to launch a new general entertainment channel Zindagi on 23 June which, in a bid to stand out from the competition, will broadcast content from Pakistan, Turkey, Latin America and Egypt.

"The reason why we have identified these markets is that the content made there is adaptable for the India market culturally," Punit Goenka, managing director and CEO of Zee Entertainment Enterprises, told DNA.

"Today, we are sourcing content and the future is in producing this content – buying ideas, buying stories from these markets and producing them either locally or within those markets where setting is much better and conducive," he added.

Zee has already commissioned 12 films for television, six produced in India and six from Pakistan. The media group is also in negotiation to co-produce shows based on popular novels, which should materialize by the end of 2014 or the beginning of 2015.

Zindagi will target Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai as well as the Hindi-speaking markets, said Goenka.

The 24-hour channel will be available on both analogue and digital cable and direct-to-home (DTH) satellite platforms in India.

Verimatrix to secure Zuku TV's OTT play in Africa

    Michelle Clancy
    | 20 May 2014

Verimatrix has extended its partnership with the Wananchi Group, the African triple-play provider, to provide content security for Zuku TV across direct-to-home (DTH) satellite, digital cable and IP-over-GPON networks — and later this year via over-the-top (OTT) video services.

Wananchi has worked with Verimatrix since 2010 when it chose its cardless Video Content Authority System (VCAS) for DVB solution to secure Zuku's direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV services — a deal later extended to Zuku's digital cable services. To support planned OTT services, Verimatrix is supplying Wananchi with a multi-network content security platform, integrating with other ecosystem partners like Harmonic, Great Lakes Data Systems (GLDS), Technicolor and Castlenet.

"The best-of-breed VCAS security solution provides robust revenue protection for Zuku TV at all points of the value chain, helping us achieve our multi-network ambitions while also providing our customers with access to the content of their choice," said Richard Alden, CEO at Wananchi Group. "Verimatrix has proven to be a valuable and strategic partner as we evolve and enhance our video services."

VCAS is a cardless security solution that secures premium video content across various types of networks – whether managed or unmanaged – using satellite DTH, cable, DTT and OTT delivery to a multitude of devices.

"Wananchi is one of Africa's most savvy pay-TV operators, seizing the opportunities being made available through the proliferation of the mobile Internet and connected devices with the switch to digital networks," said Steve Oetegenn, president, Verimatrix. "We look forward to our continued collaboration and to delivering Zuku TV to as many people as possible, across the networks and devices of their choice."

Civolution's SyncNow adds contextual multiscreen ads for World Cup

    Gabriel Miramar-Garcia
    | 20 May 2014

Civolution's SyncNow automatic content recognition (ACR) and real-time ad platform has been extended to offer TV synced contextual multiscreen advertising during live matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup starting 12 July in Brazil.

Advertisers can programmatically place digital advertisements simultaneously when key events are happening on TV.

At the start or end of a game, during half time or when a team scores a goal, the SyncNow platform will send a signal to programmatic bidding platforms to deliver targeted and contextually relevant ads on viewers' smartphones, laptops or tablets. These ads run instantly when the event happens on TV. Within seconds of the event, a digital ad appears on the target audience's laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

"At a time when advertising budgets are shifting from TV to digital, and real-time context is getting increasingly important to advertisers, SyncNow Ads offers a solution enabling TV and digital to leverage each other's natural strengths," said Alex Terpstra, CEO at Civolution. "At the same time, live event ad triggers offer a wealth of creative opportunity for advertisers to adjust their brand message to their targeted audience at the right moment in the right context."

Advertisers can then 'own' crucial moments during World Cup football matches, and engage in real-time with their target audiences via social media sites, mobile apps and websites.
