Monterosa launches first app store for real-time engagement

    Editor
    | 16 May 2014

Connected TV and engagement solutions provider Montrose has launched a 'pioneering' B2B store to provide ready-made real-time apps to global media owners and brands.

Aimed at producers and marketers who want to activate fans of entertainment, sport or fashion, in real time, via mobile, TV, out-of-home and in-stadium media, and across Facebook and Twitter, the new LViS Store is designed to offer the benefit of ready-made apps so that media owners and marketing teams don't have to start from scratch.

The store will offer apps including play-along gaming, competitions, voting for talent shows, sports data and ratings, and social-media interaction. The apps are designed to see use around events to activate audiences and drive return on investment through data capture, registration, customer acquisition, premium-content sales and sponsorship activation. Apps can be also embedded as components in existing apps, within social networks or websites.

The store also complements the LViS Studio platform which is used by broadcasters — such as Sky, Channel 4, London Live, TV2, Endemol, CBC and MediaCom — for creating and deploying second-screen apps that enhance sport, entertainment and advertising.

"LViS Store is a ground-breaking step for global media companies, TV producers and agencies who want to engage their audiences directly in real-time," claimed Monterosa CEO Tom McDonnell. "Before, managing fan interaction at scale involved long time-scales and set-up costs. Now you can choose ready-made apps that provide fun, engaging social activations that deliver hard ROI. We think this is game-changing. Our customers can now roll out LViS Apps at a scale and pace we have not seen before."

Egyptian court adjourns Al Jazeera three case, rejects Elshamy appeal

    Rebecca Hawkes
    | 16 May 2014

The Egyptian court case of three Al Jazeera English journalists has been adjourned to 22 May, amid claims their lawyers have now been asked to pay US$170,000 to view the video evidence against them.

Peter Greste, Baher Mohamed and Mohamed Fahmy, are accused of conspiring with the banned Muslim Brotherhood, and have been in prison since 29 December 2013.

"There have been many farcical scenes during the previous seven court hearings, and today was another example. It is an affront to justice for the prosecution to attempt charging $170,000 for the defence to see the video evidence against them," said a statement from Al Jazeera.

"The support from across the world has been loud and it is important to keep that going. We are continuing to do everything possible to get our journalists out of jail and are working with a first class legal team to end this injustice," the network added.

On 15 May, Cairo Criminal Court also rejected an appeal by Al Jazeera Arabic's Abdullah Elshamy against a decision to extend his detention.

Elshamy, 26, who has been in prison since 14 August 2013 without charge, is reportedly in a critical condition after being on hunger strike for more than 116 days. He was transferred to solitary confinement in Tora prison's maximum security Scorpion unit on 12 May.

On Thursday (15 May) Amnesty International urged authorities to release the journalist, describing him as a "prisoner of conscience, detained solely for his journalistic work".

VC Group brings Wi-Fi-enabled STB to Thai market

    Rebecca Hawkes
    | 16 May 2014

Thai technology company VC Group is launching a new Internet-enabled set-top box (STB) for the domestic market to provide on-demand video streaming to consumers.

Penta TV lets users connect to their Wi-Fi networks and watch TV on various platforms (both analogue and digital) for a cost of THB3,500 (US$107.6), according to the Bangkok Post.

The company is targeting the country's five million fixed broadband users. It reportedly hopes to realise revenues in excess of THB300 million ($9.2 million) over the coming three years, by controlling up to 60% of the all-in-one set-top box market by 2015.

The Penta TV box requires a minimum Internet connection speed of 2Mbps.

VUDU launches UltraViolet-based Share My Movies service

    Michelle Clancy
    | 16 May 2014

Walmart's VUDU over-the-top (OTT) video service has launched Share My Movies, a new service enabled by UltraViolet that lets users share their digital movie and TV show collections.

The service applies to all DVDs or Blu-ray movies available at Walmart stores that come with an UltraViolet digital copy. Users can share with up to five people via their e-mail addresses for free without sharing a password. Each invited person will receive an email with a link to create a VUDU account and connect to the sharer's UltraViolet library.

"One of the great reasons we own movies is because we can share them with others," said Amit Balan, senior director of VUDU for Walmart. "A movie collection can be a source of pride, and even a reflection of how we view the world. Many of us have been there: we're at home with friends, discover they've never experienced the outrageousness of Bridesmaids or that powerful running sequence from Forrest Gump, and feel inspired to walk over to our DVD or Blu-ray collection to lend them that movie. With Share My Movies by VUDU, we are removing the friction you face when you use other services or lend physical discs."

VUDU already provides free VUDU digital copies with most new movie releases sold at Walmart, and has the Disc-to-Digital service that allows users to convert the physical movies they already own into a digital copy.

"We know you've spent a significant amount of money and time building your collection and have plenty more films to add to it," said Balan. "Share My Movies by VUDU is another way we're helping you get the most out of your collection. With thousands of UltraViolet titles to choose from, VUDU enables you to watch your digital movies and TV shows across your favourite devices including your laptop, smartphone, iPad Air, Xbox One and PS4."

Amazon to debut original kids' series

    Michelle Clancy
    | 16 May 2014

Amazon has announced the premieres of its first-ever original kids' series in the UK, coming exclusively to Prime Instant Video.

The first six episodes of each show will debut this summer, beginning with animated series Tumble Leaf on 23 May, followed by Creative Galaxy on 27 June and live-action series Annedroids on 25 July.

Additional episodes of the shows will follow later this year.

"We're proud that as the UK's largest movie and TV streaming service, Prime Instant Video, is providing a great selection of leading shows for children," said Tim Leslie, vice president of Amazon Instant Video EU. "These new and exclusive children's series, made by Amazon Studios and available on Prime Instant Video in the UK very soon, have been chosen by kids and approved by parent through the pioneering Amazon Studios Pilots programme, meaning adults can rest assured their children are watching entertaining quality content."

Amazon Original preschool programming is being developed with the support of Alice Wilder, educational psychologist and educational advisor for Amazon Studios' kids programming. She was previously producer and director of research and development for the hit series Blue's Clues and Blue's Room. She said that her goal is "to give parents confidence that these programmes will provide valuable skills and life lessons that children can use in their real life — while being entertaining at the same time."

"It's been extremely exciting to partner with Amazon on developing the content and activities that will be available through Prime Instant Video. We share the belief that creativity and curiosity are muscles that need to be exercised, refined and nourished to provide children with the skills they need to succeed in today's rapidly changing world," said Wilder. "With an educational system that is focused on test-preparedness, literacy and numeracy, many parents find their kids faced with a curriculum gap. By combining core content with creativity and play, we will be able to help parents fill that gap."

Last year Amazon Studios launched its first two prime time series Alpha House and Betas, and the company recently announced six additional, original series including Chris Carter's The After, Michael Connelly's Bosch, Jill Soloway's Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle from Roman Coppola and Jason Schwartzman, Wishenpoof! from Angela Santomero, and Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street from David Anaxagoras.

OSN to launch Netflix-like streaming service for MENA

    Rebecca Hawkes
    | 16 May 2014

Middle East pay-TV operator OSN is set to launch an online video streaming service called Go, in addition to the subscription-based satellite television and catch-up services it already provides in the Arab world.

'Go by OSN' is expected to help Dubai-based OSN gain a foothold in a growing over-the-top (OTT) video market where Netflix and other major western players are conspicuous by their absence. It will compete with new regional players such as icflix and Istikana.

OSN's latest service will offer tens of thousands of hours of film and television content for smartphone, tablet and PC consumption, according to the Wall Street Journal. Although it is unlikely to offer the latest shows until after they are broadcast on its pay-TV service – which costs between AED110 and AED400 a month – it can call upon a large content library thanks to its existing arrangements with both Hollywood and Arab studios.

Video streaming is rife in the region, with Google stating the Middle East and North Africa is YouTube's second biggest market in terms of viewership, with 14.5 million hours of video from the online platform watched every day.

UltraHD 4K market passes million-unit mark

    Michelle Clancy
    | 16 May 2014

The UltraHD 4K TV panels market reached a new benchmark in March 2014 when global shipments exceeded one million units for the first time, according to a report from IHS Technology.

Driven by vastly increased deliveries from the industry's three largest makers of the high-end panels, UltraHD TV panel shipments amounted to 1.1 million units in March, nearly a threefold increase from 384,300 units a month earlier in February. The gains are even more spectacular when measured from the same time a year ago in March 2012, when total UltraHD TV panels had not yet cracked the 150,000 mark.

"From the time UHD TV panels were introduced to the world for the first time in 2012, demand for these cutting-edge displays has been slow in growing, mainly because the televisions using the panels have proved prohibitively expensive," said Linda Lin, senior analyst for large displays at IHS. "But with the technology becoming more pervasive, coupled with increasingly aggressive marketing from panel manufacturers, UHD TV panels are starting to take off."

Contributing to the market's showing were pre-stocking orders for China's Labour Day holiday at the beginning of May, and the FIFA World Cup in June.

Shipments of UltraHD panels are likely to increase faster than the total TV panel market, the firm said. Demand for UltraHD panels will grow to 68.4 million units by 2018, up 350% from 2014, IHS predicts. In comparison, TV panel shipments in general will rise just 12%.

    Qualcomm, Sohu demo LTE Broadcast

    Michelle Clancy
    | 16 May 2014

Qualcomm Technologies has partnered with Sohu.com, the 'Google of China', on a live public demonstration of LTE-TDD broadcast with high efficiency video coding (HEVC) and dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) technologies.

The demo used devices based on Qualcomm reference designs by QTI featuring QTI's Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processors and integrated Qualcomm Gobi modems, and was supported by QTI's LTE Broadcast solution for the evolved multimedia broadcast multicast service (eMBMS) platform.

LTE Broadcast is designed to allow mobile operators to more efficiently manage their spectrum and network loads by allowing the multicast of high-demand content such as live sporting events, breaking news or software updates, so that multiple users receive the same content simultaneously. It uses standard LTE network architecture and modems.

"We're excited to be supporting the growth and evolution of LTE networks worldwide," said Raj Talluri, senior vice president of product management for QTI. "With LTE Broadcast, operators can better utilise their existing LTE infrastructure to deliver customers an optimised, premium video experience on the latest mobile devices without overloading their networks."

The demo showcases of the many potential implementations for LTE Broadcast, which operators also could use to deliver real-time, location-based or off-peak services, such as pay-per-view events, live broadcast television or important firmware updates.

"This demonstration marks an important milestone in the deployment of LTE Broadcast, which we believe will significantly enhance our customers' ability to view popular, live content directly on their mobile devices," said Zeng, Xiongjie, president of Sohu Mobile Video. "We're excited to be working with QTI to bring this innovative technology to market."

Key 3GPP-standardised features of QTI's LTE Broadcast solution include file delivery over unidirectional transport (FLUTE), DASH, application-level FEC and file delivery with file repair.

LTE Broadcast is commercially available in Korea, and is expected to begin arriving in China and other regions around the world later this year.

Nearly a quarter of UK pubs serve BT Sport

    Editor
    | 16 May 2014

Justifying its aggressive marketing campaign at launch, BT Sport has revealed that almost a quarter of pubs in the UK, 19,000, have taken up its service.

And throwing yet another gauntlet at BSkyB, BT was keen to point out that only nine months into operation, it now had a similar market share of pubs as its satellite-based pay-TV archrival. BT Sport is also available to commercial premises including offices, golf clubs, sporting clubs, bookmakers and Corca-registered clubs. With its succession, BT claims to have increased the commercial market for TV sports packages – based on the number of new customers who have not previously subscribed – by around 26%.

"To sign up 19,000 customers is a fantastic achievement and underlines the appeal and the affordability of BT Sport. And to achieve a 24% share of pubs in our first year is phenomenal," said BT Sport's director of commercial customers, Bruce Cuthbert. "A year ago we said we wanted to bring premium live sport to a wider audience including those that were unable to afford Sky's high prices, and that's exactly what we've done. To be able to grow the market by 26% and to be a part of what pubs are able to offer their customers is enormously satisfying."
