New iPlayer comes out of Preview

    May 14, 2014 11.14 Europe/London By Julian Clover

New iPlayer ComputerThe BBC has made its new version of the iPlayer the default experience on computers. The new version of the online service made its debut nine weeks ago.

In a blog post Dan Taylor, head of BBC iPlayer, BBC Future Media said the majority of users preferred the new iPlayer and only 5% of our nationally-representative sample disliking the new design. They said the new interface was clearer and more intuitive.
However, there was initial disappointment that the ability to sort Categories by the most recent had been removed. The BBC subsequently restored the feature by incorporating it into the new design.

Having already made a separate Factual category, the BBC is now studying how it might filter out some of the larger diverse categories, for example Drama & Soaps, to just show crime dramas within the category.

The new iPlayer for TV is schedule to come out of Beta in the text few weeks with updates for Android and iOS devices also on the horizon.

    Nangu.TV completes Czech migration

    May 14, 2014 11.35 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Nangu TVNangu.TV has completed the migration of O2 TV customers in the Czech Republic to the nangu.TV Media Platform.

It began working with O2 last summer, when the operator re-launched its O2 TV service, providing customers with additional features such as time shift TV, recording, remote functionality and video-on-demand, all driven by nangu.TV’s Media Platform.

The timeline of the project was split into a number of phases beginning with the implementation of the nangu.TV platform for new O2 TV subscribers via IP4TV set-top boxes. The other big challenge was the integration of ADB3800 set-boxes used by O2’s existing customer base of more than 130,000 households. The migration of all existing customers from the old platform to the nangu.TV platform began in October 2013 and was completed this March.

David Duron, marketing director, O2 said, “One of the big advantages of working with nangu.TV is the ability to implement its new HD GUI and all the advanced nonlinear services that nangu.TV’s platform provides for the ADB3800 set-top boxes. The platform enabled us to immediately migrate our O2 TV customers without them needing to exchange their set-top boxes, which is a huge advantage.”

Jakub Kabourek, nangu.TV’s CEO, added, “The nangu.TV mission is to provide our customers with a great tool for interactive TV distribution and we strongly believe IPTV is the best way to do this. Customers in today’s multiscreen, connected world expect to have content everywhere, on demand and we’re delighted to be able to deliver that.”

    MMS begins online ad measurement

    May 14, 2014 11.42 Europe/London By Julian Clover

MMS ScreenSwedish audience research organisation MMS (Mediamätning i Skandinavien) is to measure the advertisements shown on computers, tablets and smart phones from the broadcasters TV4, Modern Times Group (MTG) and SBS Discovery.

It’s the first time that a country’s non-linear advertisement viewing figures will be captured by a single organisation.

MTG has four linear free-TV channels in Sweden with corresponding catch up services that are available online. Programmes from all channels are also available on the TV3 app for iOS and Android.

“Having validated common viewing figures in place is very important for all advertisers, in order to measure and monitor in a transparent manner. A uniform method of measurement is something we looked forward to for a long time, says Janna Winroth, Head of Viaplay Sweden.”

MMS has been the official measurement institute for television viewing in Sweden since 1993.

MTG was one of the founders of MMS, which is jointly owned by Swedish media and television companies and currently measures around 185 channels in Sweden.

All campaigns that started 12 May 2014 will measured and the data will be publically available. The sample audience will be 100 panel members taken from the traditional TV sample audience. The measurement is limited to live and time shifted viewing within eight days, and does not include preview and archive material. The Association of Swedish Media Agencies and Association of Swedish Advertisers have agreed that the MMS’s data will be the official viewing data.

    La Roja returns to TVE

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez
    | 15 May 2014

Spain's public network TVE has purchased the broadcasting rights for the national football team's matches in the Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018 qualification rounds.

The deal between TVE and UEFA leaves Mediaset without exclusive rights to La Roja matches.

The agreement includes the ten official matches and two more if the Spanish team doesn't qualify directly and requires the play-off. The rights are for TV, radio, Internet and mobile devices, and include the production of those matches to be played in Spain.

In addition to La Roja matches, the deal with UEFA will provide TVE with highlights of the rest of the qualification matches, taking place in from September 2014 to November 2015 in the case of the French European Championship and from September 2016 to November 2017 for the World Cup in Russia.

For TVE, sports competitions in which Spanish national teams participate are its priority.

The deal, which has been just announced, is expected to be criticised by the private networks which believe that TVE isn't competing with them for football rights on equal terms. The private media have complained several times about TVE offering a higher than market price for the rights.

Mediapro to produce La Liga final in 4K

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez
    | 15 May 2014

This year's La Liga championship has been so close that the last match between Atlético and Barcelona is serving as a final.

With the massive international interest that has arisen, Mediapro will be distributing the match to over 50 operators around the world.

The Spanish producer is to film the event in 4K, as it previously did with El Clásico. In addition to the regular HD infrastructure, Mediapro will add four 4K cameras and two mixers able to offer pictures with over 8,000 pixels. This quality is not able to be broadcast by any Spanish operator as yet, but several pay-TV networks around the world are able to offer it to their audiences.

The match, which has a potential audience of 500 million viewers, will be also post-produced in 4K. The highlights will be offered in the highest resolution through La Liga's YouTube channel.

Mediapro is testing 4K production for next season, when it plans to launch complete coverage of La Liga in Ultra HD. By using the new standard and with La Liga's deal with Twitter to offer live video commentary of every match, the football competition is becoming one of the most watched around the globe.
