Netflix increases fees for new subs

    May 12, 2014 09.57 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Netflix Living RoomNetflix has confirmed it is increasing its monthly subscription fee for new subscribers from £5.99 to £6.99.

Existing subscribers will see the current price held for a period of two years.

The price hike makes the UK service £1 more expensive than Amazon Instant Video (the rebranded Lovefilm) which currently runs at £5.99 a month.

For a company that has been championing the delivery of content in 4K there is a £5.99 tier for viewing in standard definition alone, while an £8.99 multiscreen service allows four streams to be viewed simultaneously on different devices.

Prices are also rising on the continent from €7.99 to €8.99 a month or €11.99 for the multiscreen service.

Netflix now has a total of 48.4 million members, and there are still 6.7 million DVD-by-mail members in the US.

It has been building original content, most notably through Kevin Spacey’s House of Cards.

DTT dispute flares up in Poland

    May 12, 2014 11.39 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

EmitelThe Polish national transmission company Emitel has threatened to take legal action over the delay for a tender for what will be the country’s eighth DTT multiplex.

According to Satkurier and Gazeta Prawna, the closing date for a competition cannot by law be any later than eight months after the receipt of a request for a reservation of frequencies in the 174-230 MHz band.

This would require a competition to be completed by the end of June, the request having been submitted in October last year.

However, the regulators KRRiT and UKE are now saying the deadline may not be met, with the competition instead taking place this autumn or even later.

Industry experts point out that the new multiplex could carry up to eight new TV channels and could have a detrimental effect on cable and DTH services.

This, in their view, may explain why regulators are in no hurry to hold a tender for the multiplex.

The capital increase will effectively double the number of shares in RCS&RDS to 204,000, with the new shares being released partially or total for case (for lei, euros or dollars), or by incorporation of reserves, excluding legal reserves, or compensation some liquid claims.

With end of a process that began in July 2013, the communications giant will now have 1,500 more employees as well as media services and operations facilities in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Australia.

"We're very happy to welcome our new employees to Ericsson and are confident they will help to take our broadcast services business to the next level and extend our global presence," commented Magnus Mandersson, executive vice president and head of business unit global services at Ericsson." Rightster guarantees online video owners scale, engagement

    Editor | 12 May 2014

Multichannel video distribution firm Rightster has launched a new service designed to offer rights owners and brands with the ability to target audiences online at a scale normally only possible with TV broadcasts.

The company believes that even though a lot of brands are creating video content many are finding that when they release it out into the world finding an audience at scale is the exception rather than the norm. Yet with its new Engage online video audience amplification service, Rightster is confident that content owners and brands can reach TV-sized audiences online meeting clients' ultimate goal of guaranteed views and optimal ROI.

Rightster adds that with data analysis it is essentially creating a formula for 'virality' for brands and content owners, that doesn't just secure empty 'stream-starts' that boost the total views number, but highly engaged audiences, longer view times and increased subscribers. Furthermore it asserts that unlike other paid-for products, Engage offers video management across customers' owned and operated sites, as well as their YouTube channels, and editorially "earned" distribution.

Charlie Muirhead, Rightster Founder & CEO commented: "We are delighted to launch Engage and provide clients with the peace of mind and reassurance that their content will deliver the right audience to the right demographics, at a fixed cost. We are looking forward to providing our clients with a strong competitive advantage globally, across all offices."

Premier League finale hits net for NBCUniversal
    Details

    Editor| 13 May 2014
Showing clearly just how the appetite for football is catching on in the US, NBCUniversal scored a ratings record for its coverage of the final weekend of the English Premier League.

After making an unprecedented simultaneous presentation of all ten games live on different TV networks, while Spanish-language networks Telemundo and mun2 each televised one match, NBCU posted a combined 1.56 rating up 79% on the previous high water mark of the final day of the 2011-12 Premier League season on ESPN2, FX, Fox Soccer, Speed, and Fuel (0.87 for 10am-Noon ET). On the final Sunday of the 2012-13 season, only two Premier League games aired on rated networks (ESPN2 and FOX Soccer).

The 2013/2014 season, which went right to the final day, has been regarded as the most interesting in year's and NBCU has benefited greatly over the year from the resurgence of second-placed Liverpool who enjoy a huge following across the US — especially in the cities with huge Irish diasporas — and who is to make a season pre-season tour in the US during August. The owners of Champions Manchester City are also assiduously targeting the US with the acquisition of a New York-based soccer franchise.
