    Bulgarian DTT: the true cost

    May 12, 2014 07.20 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The public broadcaster BNT appears to have been the biggest loser – at least financially – in Bulgaria’s transition to digital broadcasting.
    Bulgaria
Capital reports that BTN is currently distributing three of its channels, namely BNT 1, BNT 2 and BNT 3, on a multiplex operated by Digital First, the trading name for NURTS Digital, which is believed to have links with the banker Tsvetan Vassilev.

It adds, however, that it is publicly known that NURTS Digital cannot fill the multiplex and the project is unprofitable.

What is more, BNT is paying Digital First around BGN15 million (€7.6 million) a year, rather than the BGN8 million it previously paid for the analogue distribution of its channels.

BNT’s entire budget for this year is BGN65 million, or BGN5 million less than in 2013.

It is also deprived of income from cable and DTH operators, which do not have to pay for the distribution of its channels.

The public broadcaster says that digitisation is the responsibility of the state and it should provide help to BNT.

At present, 13.9% of homes in Bulgaria watch terrestrial TV services.

    May 12, 2014 08.01 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

russia-flagDigital TV services are now available to 85% of Russians, according to the findings of the country’s Scientific Institute of Radio.

Quoted by AKTR and rg.ru, they show that the most “advanced” digital areas are St Petersburg, with 100% coverage, followed by Moscow and the Lipetsk region, with 99.9% and 99.8% respectively.

The least developed areas are the Republic of Bashkortostan and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, where services are not yet available.

Overall, federal districts in the south have the highest availability (92.23%) and those in the northwest the lowest (80.29%).

Russia’s digital strategy is aiming for an average digital coverage of over 95% by the beginning of 2015.

By then, the vast majority of viewers will be able to receive at least 20 channels, plus additional services.

Divitel is launching OTT platform for TKS in Germany

    May 12, 2014 08.25 Europe/London By Robert Briel

easytv_off-base_baseballDivitel will launch a new OTT, multiscreen platform for TKS in Germany bringing English-language TV channels to the military and civillians.

The state-of-the-art solution is network independent and able to provide television to subscribers from TKS across Germany. The new service will be called easy TV and will serve US military off-base with a OTT service.

TKS (Telepost Kabel Service) has been providing cable television, telecommunication products and services to American military stationed in Germany for 20 year interfacing between European PAL and American NTSC broadcast standards. The operator started creating a roadmap with and roll out new television services for customers off base.

“Providing television for people off base means that you have to deal with a lot of different networks. Thus the solution should be network independent; that is where DivisioTV came in,” said Divitel in a press statement.

“Divisio TV is a solution for interactive television; it can be used for FttH, Coax, DSL, Hybrid, 3G/4G, OTT or any combination of afore-mentioned. It’s a fully modular platform that e.G. enables a multiscreen solution, which means customers can watch tv on either their television, PC/Mac, iPhone/iPad, Android phones and tablets. This expands TKS’s customer range dramatically and opens new distribution channels; the company can offer linear tv with EPG in a personalised look and feel with fully secured content.”

TKS is a daughter of Vodafone Company Kabel Deutschland. TKS is located on all major US military installations throughout Germany, and also actively serves the British Forces Germany and expat communities.

Divitel will be showing its OTT Multiscreen solution at ANGACOM 2014 in Cologne.

Entel tells Bolivians to use pirate receivers

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12 May 2014

Bolivia's national telco Entel has realised that the illegal dishes widely used throughout the country are proving useful to expand the reception of the new free-to-air (FTA) satellite networks broadcast through Túpac Katari.

"The satellite dishes just need to be oriented to the satellite's geostationary position and the 12 FTA channels could be watched perfectly," said Entel's general manager Oscar Coca.

The illegal dishes, known as chutas in Bolivia, are purchased together with a set-top box (STB) for a much lower price than the legal ones, and are sold without invoices in order to avoid taxes. The country has been focusing on fighting piracy recently because of the high cost to the TV industry, which is why Coca's statement has come as a surprise.

Entel has purchased 50% of Túpac Katari's broadcasting capacity, through which it is also launching a DTH pay-TV service. Entel was the first company to start using the satellite after it started working commercially in April.

Euskaltel taps Hispasat to extend broadband in Spain

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12 May 2014

Euskaltel has signed an agreement with Hispasat which will enable the Basque operator to increase its broadband speed and reach areas its cable network currently doesn't cover.

The deal will last for three years and will allow speeds up to 25Mbps through Hispasat's satellites positioned at 30º West. Euskaltel is specifically targeting rural and remote areas of the Basque Country.

Hispasat has deployed similar services in both Spain and Latin America, developing different IP solutions through its satellite network. In addition, the Spanish company is participating in the Ministry of Industry's public project to improve Internet access in Spain's most remote areas.

"This agreement shows once again that satellite technology is very useful when it comes to guaranteeing universal access to the Internet and reducing the digital divide," said Ignacio Sanchis, Hispasat's director of business. "The satellites are the perfect allies to bring the information society to every corner of the world."

Aitor Markaida, Euskaltel's director, added that "the agreement will allow the company to commit ourselves to our market, so every home and company in the Basque Country have access to the information society."

Ibope, Twitter to launch social TV tool in Latin America

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12 May 2014

A new social TV tool, Ibope Twitter TV Ratings (ITTR), the result of an alliance between the social network and the audience measurement company, aims to measure audience participation in social TV activities related to networks and advertisers.

The service will initially be available in Brazil by the end of the year, and then in Argentina and Colombia during 2015.

Ibope's solution aims to meet the demands of the Latin American market, in which 54% of Internet users watch TV and use social networks at the same time, with 38% commenting about what they are watching.

"The ITTR is the natural response to the increasing participation of the TV audiences on social networks," said Orlando Lopes, Ibope Media's CEO. "We aim to establish a reference point in this area."

Twitter's research says that nearly 95% of public conversations about TV happen on the microblogging platform. "As the TV experience keeps changing, broadcasters and advertisers have claimed it as a reference in order to measure audience engagement with their programming in Latin America," said Guilherme Ribemboim, Twitter's CEO in Brazil.

ITTR aims to be a package of solutions to study the interaction between audience, TV and social networks, delivering concrete figures to allow networks and broadcasters to design better programming. "We are contributing to the TV industry's development in LATAM by putting into digits the new habits of the audience," added Orlando Lopes.

Eurocom updates HD system for TVN

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12 May 2014

Spanish company Eurocom has concluded updating the HD production system for Panama's national TV network TVN.

The upgrade was carried out while the TV was on air, so broadcastings didn't need to be stopped.

Eurocom has been in charge of engineering and installation the new system, as well as staff training to operate the new features. It also designed the new production space for TVN.

The equipment installed is from Evertz, Grass Valley, Ross and DK-Technologies, brands with which Eurocom often works. The project took a month to complete.

Eurocom continues to expand internationally and already has a solid position as a provider of broadcasting and production solutions in Latin America.

Among its latest projects, Eurocom participated in the construction of Media Network's monitoring centre in Peru - from where Telefónica's B2B unit will control its satellite TV and Internet wholesaler services for the whole region - and delivered HD equipment to the ICRTV channel in the Caribbean.
