Medient, Tarantella in content venture for Asian market

    Rebecca Hawkes | 09 May 2014| 09 May 2014

Medient Studios and Tarantella Pictures have formed a joint venture to develop, finance, produce and distribute content for Asia.

Based in Kuala Lumpur, but originally from Indonesia, Tarantella Pictures is the leading production house in Malaysia, producing blockbuster films such as Lagenda Budak Setan and Ombak Rindu, and 38 television shows. Of these, 30 were listed in the top ten favourites on Indonesian television, according to the companies.

"Approximately 60% of the world's population lives in Asia. We see a comprehensive presence in Asia as a cornerstone of our strategy for the future. This relationship will leverage our existing strength in the Indian market and create a viable pan Asian platform," said Manu Kumaran, chairman, Medient Studios.

"Tarantella's founder Sharad Sharan's keen understanding of the Far Eastern market is the fundamental reason of this JV. Over the last 20 years Tarantella has built a formidable reputation in the region and we are excited by the possibilities," he added.

Sharad Sharan, managing director, Tarantella Pictures, said: "We are excited to be part of this dramatic re-engineering of the entertainment industry. With the Studioplex in Effingham County [in the US] and Atlas International in Europe, Medient have all the elements required for great success and we expect to play a vital role in this plan."

National networks, original programming drive strong first quarter for AMC Networks

    Editor | 10 May 2014

A 37% year on year increase in net revenue to $525 million and operating income up 15.8% to $148 million were the stand-outs of a very strong first quarter of 2014 for AMC.

The US content giant benefited well from the continued success of its national networks — which principally consist of the company's four nationally distributed programming networks, AMC, WE tv, IFC and SundanceTV — and original series such as The Walking Dead. At the end of the first quarter ended 31 March 2014, the flagship series grew 24% in total viewers for its fourth season and, said AMC, remains the highest rated show on television among what it called “the most coveted demographic.”

Overall AMC also witnessed 20.7% growth of national networks and an increase of $66 million of international and other business compared with Q1 2013. Other business also included a contribution from the acquisition of Chellomedia. First quarter net income from continuing operations was $72 million ($0.99 per diluted share), compared with $62 million ($0.85 per diluted share) in the first quarter of 2013.

"AMC Networks continued to build momentum in the first quarter of 2014, with double digit increases in revenue and AOCF. At our national networks, our original programming performed well, driving attention for and strengthening our network brands, with series including IFC's Spoils of Babylon, SundanceTV's The Red Road, WE tv's SWV: Reunited and AMC's The Walking Dead,”commented president and CEO Josh Sapan.

“Having completed our acquisition of Chellomedia, we are quickly integrating those networks and are streamlining our operations. We view our now-robust international platform as a springboard for additional growth for the company in the years ahead as we continue to focus on creating and delivering maximum value for our shareholders."

Scripps scores with local, retrans revs

    Editor | 10 May 2014

As it reported its first quarter results, US content company EW Scripps has shown clearly what all of the fuss in retrans rows is about.

For the first quarter of its financial year ended 31 March 2014, consolidated revenues were $204 million, up 2.6% ($5.1 million), primarily due to the increases in retrans revenue, political advertising and subscription revenue. Operating revenues were up 5.4% year on year, driven by strong local advertising and retrans revenue growth and higher-than-expected political advertising revenue of $2.7 million.

Total revenue from television stations was $102 million, up $5.3 million from the prior-year quarter. The current-year period included $2.7 million of political revenue and $1.7 million in incremental 2014 Winter Olympics advertising on the company's three NBC-affiliated stations.

In all, retrans fees from cable and satellite providers increased 19.5% to $12.5 million. Going forward, and sensing a rich seam to mine, Scripps added that in 2014 it will renegotiate retrans agreements covering more than one-third of its subscribers. In February 2014, Scripps reached an agreement to acquire the ABC affiliate in Buffalo and a MyNetworkTV affiliate in Detroit from Granite Broadcasting Corp. for $110 million in cash. The Federal Communications Commission has approved the transaction, and the deal is expected to close in the second quarter.

Commenting on the results as regards its TV business and future opportunities, Scripps chairman, president and CEO Rich Boehne said: “Our digital team oversaw the launch of what could be the first paid digital content service in the broadcast TV industry. Following investments in content, functionality and sales infrastructure, we’re now able to use the WCPO.com Insider service in Cincinnati to better test and model the opportunity for local television brands. This service will let us better meet the needs and desires of our digital-only media consumers. We’re off to a great start and already learning lessons about how to better build value in TV markets through digital services.”

To be known as MediaCity Bergen, and opening in 2017, the centre will house 1,200 media professionals and students. Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 11 May 2014

Bolivian news agency EFE and mobile operator VIVA are to launch a platform specially for the World Cup, with news and multimedia video content.

VIVA is developing a mobile app for smartphones, which will be launched before the end of the month. It will contain EFE's content, including news, reports, animated infographics, statistics and, of course, videos.

NBC and Fox to broadcast Spanish remakes

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 11 May 2014

NBC and Fox have confirmed they will broadcast the remakes of two Spanish productions. NBC will premiere The Mysteries of Laura, originally produced by Boomerang TV, and Fox is to finally air Filmax's Red Band Society.

Red Band Society is a project from Steven Spielberg's Ambling TV, which collaborated with ABC Studios for the series adaptation. The series will star Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable and Griffin Gluck.

Produced originally in Spain by Filmax and TV3, Red Band Society has achieved considerable audience success around the world. It has been broadcast in many Latin American countries and has been adapted in countries including Italy, Russia and Turkey.

Warner Bros will bring The Mysteries of Laura to NBC's audience, and according to TVE, which is currently showing the original production, it's the first time that NBC has bet on an idea from the Spanish industry.

The adaptation of the Boomerang TV story will start production in the coming weeks, with the first season due to be premiered in the autumn.

“I've always believed in this project's potential,” said Goyo Quintana, CEO of Boomerang. “And now one of our productions has become a milestone for Spain's industry.”

The Mysteries of Laura is to be filmed in New York and will star Debra Messing, Josh Lucas and Laz Alonso. The series' adaptation in the US market follows success in Russia, the Netherlands and Italy, as well as Bolivia, Peru, El Salvador and Ecuador.

    Rupert Murdoch eyes ‘Sky Europe’

    May 11, 2014 09.52 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Rupert MurdochRupert Murdoch is reportedly looking to combine British Sky Broadcasting Group with Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland, by acquiring shares held by 21st Century Fox.

Bloomberg broke the news about a possible combination of the three main European Sky platforms quoting anonymous sources.

According to the report, followed by a similar one in the Financial Times, it is still very early days for such a takeover.

At the moment, Murdoch holds a 39% stake in BSkyB, while Fox holds 55% of Sky Deutschland and 100% of Sky Italia. In 2010 Murdoch tried to take control of BSkyB, but had to drop the bid amid the phone-hacking scandal.

In the UK, Sky had 15 million subscribers at the end of March 2014, while Sky D had 3.73 million subscribers, and Sky Italia had 4.75 million. A combined Sky Europe would serve around 23.5 million customers, but such a deal would almost certainly spark the interest of European regulators.

The three European Sky companies already share a common technology platform, but a combination would create a very big player on the content rights market for sports, movies and TV series.
