Nine DTT channels to close down in Spain

    May 5, 2014 10.41 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Mediaset EspanaWATCH VIDEO. Nine Spanish digital terrestrial channels are to close down on Tuesday, May 6.

Nitro, Xplora , laSexta 3, La 7, La 9, Net TV, Veo TV, AXN and Marca TV will leave the airwaves,as a result of a government decision to close down the channels. The decision followed a ruling by Spain’s Constitutional Court, which said that the last bid for licences in 2010 didn’t follow correct procedure or respect all the rules of competition.

The licences for these channels were given as a “bonus” to existing terrestrial broadcasters without prior public tender, excluding possible interested parties for these frequencies.

The measure affects Mediaset España and Atresmedia worst, who lose two and three channels respectively. However, Atresmedia keeps four DTT channels, Antena 3, laSexta, Neox and Nova. Mediaet reamins with six channels on DTT, with Telecinco, Cuatro, Divinity, Energy, FDF (Factoría de Ficción) and Boing.

During the last few days before the closure of its channels, Mediaset España broadcast this dramatic video, called La Siete, Nueve… entre todos las mataron.

Com Hem grows TiVo amid increased losses

    May 5, 2014 11.01 Europe/London By Julian Clover

TiVo Com HemAround 12% of Com Hem’s installed base now have TiVo, but the Swedish cablenet is suffering subscriber erosion in its digital tiers, while profits slipped.

Net Loss for the Period SEK 255 million for the three months ended March 31, 2014, compared to a net loss of SEK 59 million for the three months ended March 31, 2013.

Com Hem has suffered under higher content costs and increased operational expenses relating to TiVo and its own Service Provider business.

Revenue from digital television services increased by SEK 4 million in the period to March 31, 2014. This was achieved through a combination of a better tier mix and the successful migration to the TiVo platform.

Since the commercial launch of TiVo approximately 74,000 DTV RGUs subscribe on a TiVo subscription. This is equivalent to a penetration of 12.4% of the DTV subscriber base, after only two quarters from the commercial launch.

However, the actual number of digital TV subscribers fell back by 16,000 or 2.6% from an average of 607,000 RGUs in the first three months of 2013.

Meanwhile the 1.83 million antenna households represents a new record, tempered by a fall in overall revenues.

In broadband, demand for high broadband speed and a better tier mix increased revenues.

Total high-speed broadband RGUs increased by approximately 22,000, or 4.0%, from an average of approximately 539,000 during the first quarter of 2013 to an average of approximately 561,000 during the first quarter of 2014.

In March, preparation of the payload unit and its integration with the Zenit-3SL launch vehicle was put on hold when a discrepancy in the nominal movement of the cable-mast and the Zenit-2S launch vehicle lateral plate occurred while installing the integrated launch vehicle onto the launch pad.

The launch of the Eutelsat 3B satellite is now scheduled for May 26 at 14:10 Pacific Daylight Time (21:10 UTC, 23:10 CEST) at the opening of a 54-minute launch window.

Based on the Eurostar E3000 platform of Airbus Defence and Space, the Eutelsat 3B satellite has been designed to operate three commercial payloads in the C, Ku and Ka bands.

Thuringia joins German local TV portal on Astra

    May 5, 2014 14.25 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Lokal-TV-Portal (bmt)The first local TV channels from Thuringia have launched on the HbbTV-based German local TV portal on Astra (19.2° East), enabling DTH satellite households to receive local television from the federal state.

The OTT offering which is financially supported by local media authority Thüringer Landesmedienanstalt (TLM) currently contains Südthüringer Regionalfernsehen (SRF), Salve.TV and tv.altenburg. Further local TV channels will be added soon.

“To make local television available to new viewers and thereby increase the channels’ technical reach is an important task of TLM. We are therefore excited about this new distribution possibility,” TLM director Jochen Fasco said in Erfurt.

The local TV portal which launched on January 1, 2013, and is stored on slot 99 in the channel list of many reception devices enables local TV broadcasters throughout Germany to make their linear TV channels and catch-up services available to DTH households.

For reception, a connected TV set or set-top-box is required compliant with interactive multimedia standard HbbTV and hooked up to the internet. The reason: The content is not distributed to the TV screens via satellite, but through the internet.

Egypt extends detention order for Al Jazeera journalist

    Rebecca Hawkes | 06 May 2014

An Egyptian court has extended by 45 days the detention of Al Jazeera Arabic journalist, Abdullah Elshamy, who has been imprisoned without charge since August 2013.

Appearing in court on 3 May, Abdullah Elshamy demanded he be released immediately, and said he had not seen a doctor or lawyer since being held by the authorities.

"They know it's all a big sham, thus I insist on being released immediately," the correspondent said in court.

Elshamy has been on hunger strike for over a hundred days, during which time his weight has reportedly dropped from 108kg to 74kg.

Three other Al Jazeera journalists are also being held by the Egyptian authorities.

Peter Greste, Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, who all work for Al Jazeera English, are accused of spreading false news and working with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. Their trial has been adjourned until 15 May.

Qatar-based Al Jazeera strenuously denies these charges and has repeatedly called for the immediate release of its staff.

    Rebecca Hawkes | 06 May 2014

Gurjeev Singh Kappor, the former chief operations officer of Indian TV distributor MediaPro, is to head up Star India's international business.

It follows the news in April that MediaPro, the joint venture between Indian broadcasting giants Star and Zee, is to be disbanded.

"The international business has huge growth potential which has not yet been fully tapped and we believe Gurjeev will add tremendous value to the organisation and will build on the foundations that have been put in place and take the international business to new heights," said Sanjay Gupta, chief operating officer, Star India.

"Gurjeev shares our values and our focus on the business and he has proved to be an extraordinary leader throughout his stint with Star and its ventures," he added.

Working from London, Singh will handle distribution, syndication, advertising sales and new content development in the US, South Africa, Europe, and Asia.

"I am looking forward to be back into Star's fold and delighted with the opportunity to expand our global footprint. Star is uniquely placed to drive aggressive growth in the international markets based on its great content advantage," he said.
