Placemedia adds Rentrak data to programmatic ad buying

    Michelle Clancy | 05 May 2014

placemedia has expanded its partnership with Rentrak to add additional psychographic clusters to its programmatic buying solution.

The ad exchange that enables advertisers to target and engage their audiences on linear TV, says that the addition of Rentrak's TV currency and Axciom's PersonicxX clusters gives national television advertisers the ability to leverage more targeted and precise data sets for targeting specific audiences on linear television.

The Acxiom PersonicX suite of products helps companies locate the best ad targets among consumers because its data provides a better understanding of their needs, desires, and buying habits. PersonicX's addition to the placemedia platform, combined with the actual viewing behaviour from Rentrak's millions of televisions, will allow advertisers to focus marketing resources.

"An effective programmatic buying solution on linear television requires big data sets and smart analysis of that data," said Derek Mattson president of placemedia. "We're big believers in the power of the data provided by Rentrak, and are excited about the opportunities that PersonicX brings for our customers."

Speed Racers comes to PBS with NASA

    Michelle Clancy | 05 May 2014

Maryland Public Television (MPT) is launching Space Racers, with technical consulting from NASA.

Public television stations in the top markets that will be airing Space Racers starting in May include: Los Angeles (KCET, KVCR), Dallas (KERA), Washington DC/Baltimore (MPT), Houston (Houston Public Media, TV 8), Detroit (WTVS, Detroit Public TV), Seattle (KCTS 9), Miami (WRLN Channel 17), Denver (Rocky Mountain PBS), Orlando (WEFS-TV), Pittsburgh (WQED), Salt Lake City (KUED), West Palm Beach (WXEL PBS For the Palm Beaches), Charlotte/South Carolina (ETV), Alabama (APT), Norfolk (WHRO), Arkansas (AETN), New Orleans (WLAE) and Providence (WSBE).

The official Space Racers Website, created by WNET in conjunction with Siite, has launched and includes videos, space games and tools for little scientists to explore the solar system. An exclusive section for parents and educators encompasses family activities and lesson plans based on an early-childhood STEM curriculum. Educational materials created specifically for use in local classrooms will be available on the site.

"We are thrilled and delighted at the reception of Space Racers. The station's reactions have been phenomenal and we are really excited about the pick-up of the show thus far," says Richard Schweiger executive producer and creator of Space Racers. "Working on a Space Racers Museum exhibit with the Virginia Air & Space Centre is exactly what we could hope for in terms of marrying our characters to science and space education. And nothing is more pleasing then seeing the response of the children attending our events when they see Eagle, Hawk, Robyn and the rest of the Space Racers crew for the very first time. We are pleased to be giving our fans this special treat."

Science museums and NASA visitor centres around the country will host screening events to celebrate the premiere and support the series launch locally.

The Virginia Air & Space Centre is collaborating with the Space Racers team to develop an interactive space exploration exhibit for their preschool-aged visitors. The branded Space Racers-themed exhibit debuts in summer 2014 and will include the Space Racers characters and showcase video content from the show.

"Maryland Public Television is very pleased with the overwhelming response we are receiving from public television stations around the country," adds MPT chief content officer Steven Schupak. "When we first spoke with Richard and the Space Racers team three years ago, we knew this series was something special. We are also very pleased to work on the live-action interstitials with Richard and his creative animation team."

    HBO to distribute Coffee Town

    Michelle Clancy | 05 May 2014

Electus Digital has inked a licensing deal with HBO for exclusive television distribution of CollegeHumor's Coffee Town. The film will be available on HBO and Cinemax.

The 18-month licence period extends through October 2015 and covers the US and its territories including Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and Guam, plus Bermuda.

Coffee was first released in July 2013 across all digital platforms and through a series of limited theatrical engagements, using a promotional strategy focused online and targeting fans of CollegeHumor and the movie's cast.

"The reaction to Coffee Town has greatly exceeded our expectations," said Ricky Van Veen, co-founder of CollegeHumor and a producer of Coffee Town. "I'm excited for more people to stumble upon it in a different environment and join the movie's fan base."

Coffee Town is the first workplace comedy for the generation that increasingly doesn't have an office. When a 30-something website manager who uses a local cafe as his office learns of plans to convert the space into a bar, he enlists the help of his two best friends to help save his freeloading existence.

Electus International brokered the deal. In addition to the agreement with HBO in the US, Electus International has secured licensing deals for television distribution of Coffee Town with Sky in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and with Canal+ Spain in Spain and Andorra.

    Spanish channel closure deadline looms

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 05 May 2014

From tomorrow (6 May), nine free-to-air (FTA) channels will be removed from Spain's DTT service.

In April, the networks garnered an average audience share of 6.7%, viewers who will now have to choose other channels from Spain's reduced FTA schedule.

Atresmedia's channels - Nitro, Xplora and laSexta3 - were the most watched among the channels forced to close, and the group has decided to save the one with highest audience, Xplora, which it will keep on-air via the Internet. As well as Atresmedia, Mediaset is looking carefully at the numbers, as a 6.7% share is substantial and could tip the scales for one network or another. Over recent months, Atresmedia has been topping audience figures and therefore has capitalised on advertising investment.

The only certainty is that from tomorrow the country’s FTA offer will be reduced by 37.5% due to the closure of Atresmedia's Xplora, Nitro and laSexta3, Mediaset's La Siete and Nueve, Net TV's AXN and three more telesales signals.

No future plans for DTT have been unveiled, although a new bid will be probably carried out, and the freed up radioelectric space will be used by LTE operators.

The government's decision followed a ruling by Spain's Supreme Tribunal, which said that the last bid for licences in 2010 didn't follow correct procedure or respect all the rules of competition.

TVE close to bankruptcy with €800 debt

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 05 May 2014

The Spanish Government is looking for emergency solutions to TVE’s unsustainable financial situation.

According to a report published by El Mundo, TVE's debt is over €800 million, which could, theoretically, drive the channel to closure. Although this is unlikely to happen, the Government has been forced to intervene. According to El Mundo, the channel's directors will leave and a new financial model will be put in place.

Since 2009, the channel's debt has grown by €100 million a year. The channel doesn’t support advertising and the only private income is provided by the country's telcos, while the rest of the budget is directly paid by public money. The institution was supposed to reform itself in order to reduce administrative expenses, but this hasn't been achieved.

TVE has a capital stock of €1,510 million, half of which will be endangered by the huge debt. According to Spanish regulations, when the debt exceeds half of the capital stock of a company, the association should be dissolved.

The situation is a bit different for TVE, mainly because the public TV service is too important to allow it to close. In addition, the political interests represented in TVE’s board of directors make it difficult for the Government to force the executives to resign.

The Government is said to be preparing an extra credit line of €120 million to support the network while it finds another solution and works out a different financial model.

Caracol, RCN remove HD channels from pay-TV schedule

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 05 May 2014

The free-to-air (FTA) vs. pay-TV conflict in Colombia has escalated in recent weeks with Caracol and RCN removing their HD channels from the country’s pay-TV schedule, demanding a payment to keep them on-air.
This has caused the country's regulator ANTV has to step in to the conflict. According to the FTA networks, cable and satellite operators pay for the HD channels of other premium networks, and therefore should also be paying Caracol and RCN. What started two weeks ago as a move by Caracol to put pressure on operators has now been followed by RCN and a solution doesn’t seem to be near.

The tug-of-war will reportedly be solved by ANTV during first week of June, before the World Cup starts. The two networks will broadcast the games, although, for the moment, they won't be available in HD for the nearly one million of pay-TV viewers who have subscribed to the high-definition service.

The HD service can also be watched through DTT, but the digital signal is currently only available in the capital district of Bogotá and the country's second biggest cities Medellín and Cartagena.

According to Caracol, the conflict started in February, when the channel contacted the pay-TV operators asking for payment to broadcast its HD version. An answer was required before 16 April, but never came, which led Caracol to stop broadcasting.

DIF, EBU, FAME present future of advanced media and UltraHD

    Joseph O'Halloran | 05 May 2014

The Digital Interoperability Forum (DIF), European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Forum for Advanced Media in Europe (FAME) are presenting a three-in-one forum for future TV, including 4KTV.

To be held from 4-6 June at the Ducal Palace, Lucca, Italy, the events include Fame UltraHD TV Roadmap Workshop, the annual National Conference of HD Forum Italy and the 11th European Digital Forum. DIF, EBU and FAME call the events a "unique platform of meetings", with the aim of linking up in the name of competitiveness and progress all projects, companies, and European and national institutions.

The events are intended for device manufacturers, platform operators, software and middleware vendors, applications developers and broadcasters engaged in advanced media, and their relevant industry associations, to share knowledge and experience that will support the successful, industry-led introduction of these services in Europe.

The objective of FAME’s work is to consider UltraHD TV in an end-to-end chain approach encompassing production, distribution and the consumer domain. FAME’s primary focus is on technology issues, including those related to content protection and management and it says that it aims to reach a voluntary consensus on advanced media experiences issues concerning interoperability and standardisation.

With the growing interest in UltraHD and TV sets already being sold, in July 2013 FAME began a process of analysing and promoting the resolution of the technical issues and the key elements for the successful launch of UltraHDservices in Europe. FAME will plot a course for UltraHD to share knowledge and experience across Europe that will help to deliver the benefits of the future of television to the European public and industry alike.

In a theme that will be explored at the conference in Lucca, the company cautions that the successful introduction of UltraHD TV in Europe will depend on investment for more devices, platforms, network capacity and content. The FAME UltraHD TV Roadmap Workshop will bring together senior industry executives from all parts of the media value chain, which will present their vision on the introduction of 4K/UltraHD TV in Europe. Participants will be strongly invited to enjoy the UltraHD TV experience.

"HD Forum Italyis honoured to be able to hold its annual conference in conjunction with The European Digital Forum in Lucca and to welcome their European body of reference, such is FAME” commenyted Benito Manlio Mari, President of HD Forum Italy, ”the three events are connected by a leitmotiv: "The (tele) visions that will come" where the ingredients are the Ultra HD, a multi-platform audio-visual technology tailored to the expectations of users and a content industry that can enhance the highest quality of audio-visual production of all Member States of the European Union".

"We are very proud and happy to arrange a FAMEmeeting in Lucca,” said Sheila Cassells, Executive Director of DIF and co- president of FAME, “not only for the beauty of the city and the Palazo Ducale, but also for the high reputation that accompanies the Digital Forum throughout Europe. The Workshop on Ultra HD TV will be a crucial opportunity to introduce this new and exciting consumer experience in the near future, due to the large contribution of experts in the leading industry that are arriving from all over Europe".

"We are really happy to be able to present an agenda so rich and extraordinary for insights and speakers,” added Andrea Michelozzi, President of Comunicare Digitale and Chairman of the European Digital Forum, “to be able to convey to Lucca 89 top speakers is a great reason of pride and prestige. The work shared with HD Forum Italy and Famehas produced a result widely appreciated throughout the digital community. The "great beauty" of an experience like this is made by the networking shared and the programme achieved; that once again, we are confident, it will produce great results and future projects".

Vienna State Opera claims first live 4K-streamed broadcast

    Joseph O'Halloran | 05 May 2014

One of the world’s most famous performance institutions, the Vienna State Opera (VSO), is to stream what is claimed to be the world’s first live production in 4K video coding (HEVC).

Delivered via MPEG-DASH over the Internet for global viewing on Samsung Smart TVs and on special public display in the opera house, the broadcast is set for 7pm CET on 7 May with a production of Verdi’s Nabucco starring Plácido Domingo in the title role will. It will be streamed for global viewing on UltraHD smart TVs as well as to a 65" Samsung UltraHD TV at the opera house.

The Vienna State Opera boasts the world’s largest repertoire of opera and ballet works, holding 60 titles and more than 300 performances per season. Producing more than 40 live broadcasts annually, the Vienna State Opera, also known as Wiener Staatsoper, is a leader in the use of innovative technology for the arts and is making nearly all of its 2014/2015 season productions accessible to viewers via the Internet, smart TVs and mobile devices.

The new Wiener Staatsoper Samsung Smart TV app has already been released, claimed to be the first of its kind fully integrated UltraHD playout functionality that will allow viewers worldwide to watch the broadcast at their respective prime time, through Vienna State Opera’s unique time-shift feature.

VSO’s broadcast is based on video processing solutions from Elemental Technologies. In addition to 4K HEVC real-time video streaming, Elemental will support live streaming and video-on-demand (VOD) for the Wiener Staatsoper full HD live streaming service, which enables viewers to purchase a selection of live performances over the Web to be enjoyed on computers, mobile devices (iOS and Android), connected TVs and on Samsung smart TVs, time-shifted for optimal viewing in each local market. Elemental also supports a Vienna State Opera companion application that shows subtitles and score sheets through a second screen app in sync with broadcasts.

The workflow for the 4K streaming event was designed by Elemental partner ETAS High Tech Hardware Systems. Elemental Live will encode content captured by a Sony PMW-F55 CineAlta 4K camera. Delivery of the 4K HEVC MPEG-DASH streams will be managed by Ooyala for viewing worldwide via a custom Samsung connected TV application and PC-based application. Elemental will also encode content for a 65-inch Samsung connected TV for public viewing at the opera house.

“Our multiscreen offer, VOD services and user-selectable two-channel live programme provide new and exciting ways for fans to experience the arts with the highest levels of accessibility and artistry,” said Christopher Widauer, director of digital development for the Vienna State Opera. “The flexibility, speed and power of solutions from Elemental and the unique ability to stream 4K video using HEVC and MPEG-DASH, are vital for us to broaden the possibilities for opera and ballet viewing experiences.”

M6 hit by ad market slump

    May 5, 2014 08.47 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

M6 Devant ma TVFrench broadcaster M6 has warned of a full-year decline in profit in its latest set of results.

These show that its consolidated revenues in the first quarter amounted to €312.2 million, little changed on the €311.8 million (+0.2%) posted in the same period a year earlier.

However, within that figure advertising revenues fell by 2% year-on-year to €190.1 million, with those for cable and satellite services slumping by 6.2% to €10.1 million.

M6 notes that the more limited decline (1.8%) in FTA channel advertising to €180 million was helped by the commercial innovation Puissance TNT (‘DTT Power’), which was launched on January 5 and has become the leading advertising service on DTT.

It also says that the proprietary channel W9 retained its leadership both in early primetime and amongst the under 50s throughout the day, while 6ter became the new leading DTT channel among its under 50-year old housewives target audience.

M6’s EBITA in Q1 amounted to €41.8 million, compared to €60.7 million a year earlier.
