Comcast reportedly set to buy FreeWheel for $320MN

    Parent Category: News | 03-03-2014
Days after agreeing to buy Time Warner Cable and Netflix paying for premium access to its network, leading US cable MSO Comcast is said to be on the verge of buying online advertising firm FreeWheel.
According to reports in the Financial Times, Comcast is poised to pay around $320 million for the seven-year-old company founded by former employees of Google advertising subsidiary DoubleClick. Privately-held, it has offices in Silicon Valley, New York, London and Beijing, funded by Steamboat Ventures, Turner Broadcasting System, DIRECTV, Battery Ventures and Foundation Capital.
Somewhat ironically, and perhaps clearly explaining the rationale of the deal, the prospective acquisition would come just as FreeWheel published its latest Video Monetisation Report which paints a picture of a golden age of television with digital services being regarded as just another form of TV. The report showed that over 75 billion videos were viewed in 2013 — with 60 billion video ad views served — as people discovered, revisited or binged on content across a variety of screens and platforms.
Crucially, analysing the driving forces of the uptake, the survey found that long-form content enjoyed a surge, with live content enjoying a 148% increase in ad views overall and 268% growth in ad views on authenticated content year-over-year. Overall ad views were up 30% and video view growth was up 31%.

Turner, Trans Media to launch CNN Indonesia

    Parent Category: News | 03-03-2014
Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific and PT Trans Media have entered into a strategic partnership to launch CNN Indonesia, a 24-hour news channel and accompanying website in Bahasa Indonesia.
The channel will be the first of its kind for CNN in Southeast Asia, delivering a localised version of CNN news to the region's most populous nation. Trans Media will operate CNN Indonesia from its facilities in Jakarta and in addition to engaging local journalists to generate coverage, the channel will also tap into CNN International's global assets and share content from global affiliate partnerships.
CNN Indonesia will be complemented by a digital presence, including CNNIndonesia.com, designed to tap into a growing online video market. Indeed Turner says that with more than 100 million Indonesians expected to be online by 2016, a multi-platform brand will be a vital and complementary component to the on-air offering.
"This agreement with one of the country's largest media corporations puts CNN in a unique position to reach millions of Indonesians in a way that we have not been able to previously,” commented Jeff Zucker, CNN Worldwide president. “The combination of the strength of the worldwide newsgathering power of CNN with the local perspective and sensibility that Trans Media will bring to the partnership enables us to provide important news and information to this enormous, non-English speaking audience."
Added Chairul Tanjung, founder and chairman of Trans Media's parent company, CT Corp: "I believe this partnership will help Indonesians to better understand the world and even more importantly, also help the world to better understand Indonesia. This is a partnership of two like-minded organisations who share common values of quality, integrity and transparency. CNN Indonesia will be the new destination for trustworthy and engaging content."

Doordarshan's Nepal, DTH upgrade plans approved

    Rebecca Hawkes | 03-03-2014
The Indian Government is to install eight terrestrial television transmitters along the country's border with Nepal, which could enable the broadcast Doordarshan content to 65% of the population of Nepal.
The Union Cabinet has also approved the expansion of Doordarshan's direct-to-home (DTH) satellite TV network from 59 to 97 channels, and subsequently 59 to 97 channels, as well as installing 23 digital terrestrial TV (DTT) transmitters. In addition, it will provide funds to update the infrastructure for the state radio broadcaster AIR.
In total, the authorised expenditure on the upgrades for India's public TV and radio broadcasters, which are overseen by Prasar Bharati, amount to INR35 billion.
The plan for Doordarshan's remaining 11th and new 12th Plan schemes, entitled Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development, is set for completion between 2015-2016, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said on Friday (28 February).

Converged cable access shipments hit record high

    Michelle Clancy | 03-03-2014
The fourth quarter of 2013 marked the highest number of combined CMTS and converged cable access platform (CCAP) upstream and downstream DOCSIS channel shipments on record, according to Infonetics Research.
The leap in shipments, said the analyst, owed largely to a 192% sequential jump in CCAP channel orders, yet despite an 11% revenue bump in the quarter the combined worldwide CMTS, CCAP and edge QAM market was down 8% in 2013 from the previous year, dropping to $1.3 billion. CMTS channel price erosion in the early part of 2013 was the primary reason for the revenue decline, notwithstanding record levels of CMTS and CCAP channel shipments.
"The pent-up demand for new CCAP-capable equipment is evident in the early volume deployments of CCAP gear, and we expect the upward trend in combined CMTS and CCAP channel shipments to continue as operators prepare their networks for DOCSIS 3.1 and potential remote physical layer architectures," noted Jeff Heynen, principal analyst for broadband access and pay-TV at Infonetics Research.
Harmonic is the edge QAM revenue leader in 4Q13 and for the full year 2013. Cisco and Arris led in CCAP.
"Casa Systems had an outstanding fourth quarter shipping CCAP equipment globally, but it wasn't enough to overtake perennial leaders Cisco and Arris," Heynan said. "However, these vendors should now be on notice, as Casa's made inroads and will continue to make this market more dynamic."

Prisa speeds up Canal+ share sale

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 03-03-2014
Prisa has decided to speed up negotiations to sell its share in Canal+, in which Telefónica and Mediaset are interested.
The media group's 2013 financial results show that advertising income is recovering (1.8% growth in Q4), printed media is stable and the Latin American business – mostly radio and editorial activities – are growing solidly. During the last year, Prisa managed to refinance its debt, which has given stability to the company's financial structure.
Canal+ invoiced €1,166 million during 2013, representing a 9.2% increase, but again the football rights are a burden to Prisa's pay-TV business, producing an EBITDA of €32.5 million (down 82.1% with respect to 2012). And although Canal+ has increased its market share (44.3%), it has lost almost 13,000 subscribers.
So Prisa is under no illusions: Canal+ needs to be sold. According to Europa Press, the company told Spain's national commission for the stock market CNMV that Telefónica and Mediaset had two weeks to decide whether they wanted to buy the platform or not.
Telefónica has also publicly stated its interest in buying Prisa's share of Canal+, in which the telco already has a stake. César Alierta's company wants to grow its pay-TV business during 2014 and Canal+ seems to be an essential part of its plans. Some analysts have also pointed to Al Jazeera as the third party interested in the operation, although the group has made no further move after last year's initial offer.

Twitter, Mediapro buy La Liga rights

    Parent Category: News | 03-03-2014
Spain's professional football league LFP has signed a deal with Twitter and Mediapro, which owns broadcasting rights of La Liga, to bring Spanish football to a world audience. The deal, sealed in Twitter's San Francisco head offices, will provide the social network with audiovisual content through @LaLiga.
According to a LFP, the agreement aims to allow football supporters to get pre-match coverage as well as experience matches during and after they happen, and also gather player reactions. La Liga has been ranked as the European national competition with highest number of international followers, thanks to the participation of football stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) and Lionel Messi (Barcelona).
Through this new deal with Twitter, the LFP will use the network's Amplify tool, which allows tweets to be accompanied by live videos so match highlights will be available in real time for a global audience.
The LFP already tried out this new tool during some matches in late February. The tool makes the Spanish football competition one of the most advanced in the world in terms of online communication, alongside the NFL, the NBA and the MLB.
The deal with Twitter "will enable La Liga BBVA to extend its reach globally. Now the best league in the world will be on the best social media network in the world," said Javier Tebas, LFP's president.
Dick Costolo, Twitter's CEO, celebrated the agreement as well, and added they will continue "working to provide users with the content they are looking for while maintaining the global spirit that has come to define Twitter."

Gannett, Sander complete affiliate sale to Meredith

    Michelle Clancy | 03-03-2014
Gannett Co and Sander Media LLC have completed the previously announced $177 million sale of CBS TV affiliate KMOV-TV to Meredith Corp, following the receipt of regulatory approvals.
As part of the sale, Sander Media has conveyed to Meredith substantially all of its assets used in the operation of KMOV-TV, which Sander Media acquired upon completion of the Gannett-Belo transaction on 23 December 2013.
In addition, Gannett has conveyed certain other assets that are needed to provide services to KMOV-TV, which Gannett acquired from Belo Corp upon close of the Gannett-Belo transaction.
The transaction will not have a material effect on Meredith's third quarter or full year fiscal 2014 financial performance, it said.
"We're pleased to add this high performing station to our portfolio," said Meredith chairman and CEO Stephen Lacy. "The acquisition of KMOV adds another top 25 television market to our group, and is consistent with our successful total shareholder return strategy. Together with KCTV (CBS) in Kansas City, Meredith now has powerful local brands in two of the Midwest's top news and sports markets."
In December, Meredith announced separate definitive agreements to acquire the broadcast assets of KMOV and of two television stations in Phoenix, the nation's 12th largest market. Meredith expects to complete the acquisition of the Phoenix stations – KTVK-TV, an independent, and KASW -TV, the CW affiliate – by 30 June.
The licence and certain related assets of KASW will be purchased by a third party – SagamoreHill of Phoenix, LLC – and Meredith will provide certain services for the operation of KASW pursuant to a customary services agreement with SagamoreHill, in accordance with Federal Communications Commission local television ownership rules.
In the first full year post closing, all three television stations are expected to generate combined revenues of $105 to $115 million, and be accretive to run-rate earnings per share by $0.16 to $0.18.
Meredith continues to expect fiscal 2014 full year earnings per share to range from $2.60 to $2.95, and fiscal 2014 third quarter earnings per share to range from $0.63 to $0.68. Ranges for both periods exclude operating results and transaction expenses related to the acquisitions of television stations in Phoenix and St Louis.

MP & Silva opens new Taiwan office

    Louise Duffy | 03-03-2014
Sports media company MP & Silva has expanded its presence in the Asia-Pacific region with the launch of its first Taiwan office.
It aims to maximise its partnership with the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) following last month’s appointment as its exclusive advisor for all media rights sales, as well as the production of all games.
The company has appointed country director Jammie Chen to head the Taiwan market, in addition to Anthony Yu as executive producer to oversee its sports production initiatives.
Jammie is primarily responsible for overseeing MP & Silva’s relationship with CPBL, developing new commercial opportunities, in addition to business functions related to sales, marketing, production and operations. Jammie will be based in Taipei and will report directly to Beatrice Lee, managing director of MP & Silva, Asia-Pacific. Highly regarded for his sports production experience, Anthony’s appointment highlights MP & Silva’s commitment to partner the CPBL to showcase the league in the best possible manner with high production values.
Lee said: “MP & Silva is focused on growing the Taiwan market, and we are delighted to have someone with Jammie’s and Anthony’s experience and expertise in the sports broadcast industry. We’re confident their insights will contribute to expanding our presence in the market. The availability of expanded CPBL media rights in Taiwan will introduce a new competitive edge to the sports media industry, and we believe fans will ultimately benefit from this as the real winner. With an optimistic outlook of the CPBL, we look forward to reaching new heights in partnership with the league.”

Apple TV generates $1BN in 2013

    Michelle Clancy | 03-03-2014
Apple TV, that palm-sized set-top gadget that Steve Jobs famously called a “hobby,” is turning in decidedly non-hobby-like numbers.
According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, Apple generated more than $1 billion in revenue from the Apple TV units last year. Cook offered up that number at the annual Apple shareholder meeting, which roughly translated means that the giant from Cupertino sold about 10 million of the devices in 2013.
In contrast, it sold just over 5 million units sold in 2012, making Apple TV the company’s fastest growing hardware product category, with 80% year-over-year growth.
The growth clearly points to an increased uptake of over-the-top (OTT) content by consumers considering that the design itself is largely without a major refresh since 2012.
There are signs that this situation could change, however, given reports that there are references to the next-generation Apple TV inside the latest iOS 7 software builds.
According to one report from the 9 to 5 Mac tech blog, it found a clear reference inside of an Apple TV framework related to the device’s AirPlay functionality: “The mention of the next Apple TV is…‘AppleTV4,1.’ The current Apple TV is ‘AppleTV3,2’ while 3,1 is the 1080P model introduced in March 2012, and 2,1 is the first iOS model introduced in September 2010.”
The consistency in nomenclature, it said, indicates that the new Apple TV model referenced here is part of the existing Apple TV product family, instead of the fabled HDTV or multifunction set-top/home gateway that some have speculated that Apple would release. Also, the step-change from 3,2 to 4,1 “confirms that the device will see notable changes in terms of internal components,” the blog said.
Apple is reportedly mulling some different technology reboots for the device, which for now remains a standalone set-top box (STB) that streams iTunes content as well as content from other “iDevices” via the Airplay capability.
So far the palm-sized gadget has been a niche gadget that mainly sweetens the pot for Apple’s electronic sell-through (EST) business, by offering a way for users to watch TV shows and movies purchased from iTunes on the big screen. But Apple also offers access to OTT options like Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO GO, YouTube and Vevo; and third parties have embraced it as well. Sling Media announced back in October that Apple TV owners could stream live TV content via the Slingbox app for iPhone and iPad.
Inside sources told 9 to 5 Mac that Apple is considering the integration of AirPort Express into Apple TV, including its own 802.11ac wireless router. It would be unnecessary for households that already have a Wi-Fi router attached to their ISP modem, but for those that don’t, the combo could be an attractive one.
9 to 5 Mac speculated that the onboard router could be used as a gatekeeper, delivering peak video performance for the Apple TV streams and “de-prioritising other wireless traffic as necessary.”
The blog also reported that Apple has been testing an Apple version that has a built-in TV tuner component—presumably, for receiving over-the-air (OTA) signals from local broadcast stations along with cable QAM channels. This would make it into an all-in-one cord-cutting kit of course—setting it up to take on pay-TV providers head-on.
Apple itself has not confirmed any launch event dates for 2014.

ITV expands Nordic production base with UNITED

    Editor | 03-03-2014
In a further extension of its strategic move to grow its international content business, ITV has acquired Danish TV production company UNITED.
Founded in 2012 UNITED makes popular factual and entertainment series for Danish broadcasters and has an exciting slate of factual, entertainment and reality shows in its domestic arena, with an increasing emphasis on international formats.
The company is helmed by producers Louise Ellerbæk and Mads Lund. Lund has a background in journalism and is a former Editor at TV2 Denmark, producing more than 100 television programmes for Danish broadcasters TV2, DR, Viasat/TV3, SBS/Kanal 4 and 5. Ellerbæk has worked with TV production and content development since 1993 and has worked as an executive producer for TV2 and SBS/Kanal 4.
Commenting on the move, Paul Buccieri, Managing Director ITV Studios International and President & CEO ITV Studios US Group, said: “The acquisition of UNITED further strengthens our production capabilities in the Nordics. The company has a great track record in the region, with two exceptional and experienced leaders at the helm. I am delighted to welcome them to the ITV group and look forward to helping them realise their ambitions both in the Nordics and internationally.”
Added Lund and Ellerbæk said: ITV has a fantastic history in entertainment and formatted factual. We are looking forward to collaborating on formats and programmes with our sister ITV companies in the Nordic region.”
The acquisition designed to consolidate ITV’s strong creative production operation in the Nordics, comes days after the UK’s leading independent broadcaster posted what it called its best year-on-year on-screen performance for ten years. For the year ended 31 December 2013, viewing for ITV main channel was up 3% and ITV Family SOV up 4%, driving total external revenues to rise 9% to £2.389 billion EBITA before exceptional items rose by £107 million or 21% to £620 million. As it rebalanced its business lines, non-NAR revenues were up £175 million to £1.211 billion.
