Bertelsmann sticks with TV as core business
    Parent Category: News | 19-02-2014
Thomas Rabe, CEO of RTL parent company Bertelsmann, firmly believes in the future of television: "Video content has never been more in demand than today," he told German weekly newspaper Die Zeit.
"We constantly invest and develop new offers. The TV channel Geo-TV will launch soon," said Rabe. The new pay-TV documentary channel is inspired by reportage magazine Geo published by Bertelsmann subsidiary Gruner+Jahr.
The business model of television is "robust", said Rabe, its reach grows "if you combine classic and online television". He added that TV advertising "is highly efficient and inexpensive compared with other media".
"Television is also not a competitor, but a beneficiary of social media," stressed Rabe. "We therefore firmly believe in the future of television. That's why it is and will stay our most important core business."

    Samsung maintains smart TV supremacy
    Editor | 19-02-2014
The end of 2013 saw a merry Christmas indeed for the connected TV market, and Samsung in particular, according to Strategy Analytics research.
With all of the leading TV vendors using connected capabilities to boost average selling prices (ASPs), the analyst's Smart TV Market Share Report Q4 2013 found that that Korean CE giant captured just over a quarter of the smart TV market, with nearest rival and compatriot LG trailing 12 percentage points behind on 14.4%. The latter actually saw market leading (2.5%) year-on-year growth for its connected TV products, comparing very well to Samsung's 1%. The rest of the connected TV industry performed poorly, with Sony, Panasonic and Sharp all showing year-on-year market share declines. Sony fell furthest, ceding second place to LG.
Samsung and LG also dominated the global flat panel TV market, registering Q4 13 shares of 21.1% and 13% respectively, far ahead of TCL (7%), Sony (6.2%) and Hisense (5%).
Commenting on the trends revealed, David Watkins, director of connected home devices at Strategy Analytics, said: "As smart TV becomes a more standard feature in TVs, dictated both by the vendors' desire to raise ASPs and consumers' desire to future-proof their big ticket purchases, Smart TV market shares will begin to more closely resemble that of the overall FPTV market. We see this fluctuation sorting itself out among the Japanese vendors which came to the segment early and fast-growing Chinese vendors like TCL."

French-German channel Arte has purchased the TV rights to the drama series Rectify, after striking a deal with ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE).
The fictional series, a Sundance Channel production, has been acquired by the cultural channel for both France and Germany.

Rectify is set to return for a second series on Sundance Channel in the US in summer 2014.
The series features a man released from prison after 19 years when DNA evidence casts doubt on his conviction for the rape and murder of a young girl.

He returns to his hometown where he must readjust to his new life as doubt still lingers over his innocence.

German consumer electronics market declines in 2013

    Jörn Krieger | 20-02-2014
The German market for consumer electronics products recorded a decline by 2.6% in 2013, reaching a total turnover of almost €27 billion (2012: €27.7 billion), according to industry organisation gfu.
"The turnover in 2013 is rated against a very good year, 2012, with large sports competitions and analogue switch-off via satellite. These events have lead to advance purchases and therefore more turnover," said Hans-Joachim Kamp, chairman of gfu's supervisory board. The drop in turnover was especially noticeably in the segment of TV sets with minus 19.8% while the turnover in sales of smartphones and tablets grew by 18.8% and 36.1% respectively.
Connected TV sets increased their popularity in 2013 as 56% of all TV sets sold were models which can be hooked up to the Internet (2012: 50%). More than a third (38%) were 3D-capable.
This year, the market is expected to grow again, not least because of the Football World Cup. "For 2014, we expect a growth by almost 1% and therefore a turnover increase for the whole consumer electronics market to more than €27 billion," said Kamp.

Deutsche Bank and Kirch Group settle dispute

    Jörn Krieger | 20-02-2014
Deutsche Bank and Kirch Group have ended their long-running legal battle with the financial settlement on which both sides agreed costing Germany's largest bank €775 million in addition to interest rates and compensation of expenses – apparently amounting to a total of more than €900 million.
The settlement, which puts an end to all legal cases between Deutsche Bank and Kirch Group, is based on a proposal by Munich's higher appeal court from March 2011.
Media entrepreneur Leo Kirch who died in 2011 made Deutsche Bank and its former head Rolf Breuer responsible for the bankruptcy of his company and instigated the legal action as Breuer doubted Kirch's creditworthiness in a TV interview in 2002.

Ooredoo teams with EBU for beIN SPORTS’ football coverage

    Rebecca Hawkes | 20-02-2014
beIN Sports is to benefit from a new video contribution network from Qatari telco Ooredoo in partnership with the European Broadcast Union (EBU) for the delivery of HD European football footage between the broadcaster’s studios in Paris and Doha.
beIN Sports will aggregate all French Ligue 1 sports production through Paris and transmit the video content over the media contribution network, based on Net Insight’s Nimbra platform. It will also direct its coverage of Spain’s La Liga and the Italian Serie A through the network to Qatar.
“Our new robust network solution will enable us to deliver the very best high definition coverage of the most exciting European matches live and direct to our viewers’ homes. This world class network implementation is another indication of our ambition to be the world’s leading sports broadcaster,” said Mohammad Al Subaie, executive director of commercial affairs, beIN Media Group.
The network guarantees loss-less routing and provides enhanced capabilities to control the quality of service, with easily enabled ad hoc services, according to the EBU’s Graham Warren.
The Qatari sports broadcaster, formerly known as Al Jazeera Sport, holds the Middle East and North African broadcast rights to many major football leagues and competitions, including the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and the FIFA World Cup.
