    Stofa wears Cisco CCAP
    JANUARY 21, 2014 10.52 EUROPE/LONDON BY JULIAN CLOVER

StofaDanish cablenet has become the first operator in Europe to deploy Cisco’s Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) solution, the technology company has announced.

CCAP will enable the 600,000-subscriber network to simultaneously handle video on demand (VOD) and high-speed broadband traffic within the same access platform. Cisco says such deployments help reduce operational costs.

“By simply upgrading to the latest Cisco ubr10K and RFGW10 modules, we are able to double our access capacity, simplify our operations and reduce the rack space and power consumption significantly,” says Thomas Helbo, CTO, Stofa.

The initial integration took place in autumn 2013. Stofa is now looking to use its newly released capacity to look at 4K services.

“This is a milestone for European cable. With the first European deployment of video and data convergence based on Cisco’s CCAP platform, we are proud to be working with Stofa to enable them to innovate and be more competitive. Building on our long-standing relationship with Stofa, this initiative will enable them to take their infrastructure to the next level and better prepare for future consumer demands.” says Yves Padrines, vice president, Service Provider Video, EMEAR, Cisco.

Stofa has installed the Cisco uBR10012 CMTS with 3G60, PRE5, 3G-SPA and the RFGW10 Universal Edge QAM.

India's TV ratings continue to cause a stir as Kantar takes to the courts
    Rebecca Hawkes | 23-01-2014

Kantar Market Research is taking court action in India over the government's new guidelines regulating television audience measurement in the country.
Kantar, which is a shareholder in Mumbai-based TV ratings agency TAM Media, says the new rules would result in TAM's closure or operational suspension and that it would be forced to sell its stake in the 15-year old company.
The new guidelines, based on recommendations from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and recently issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, prevent a single entity from having paid-up equity above 10% in both a ratings agency and a broadcaster, advertiser or advertising agency to ensure fair ratings.
The guidelines follow a bitter dispute over ratings between TAM, advertisers, agencies and broadcasters in India during 2103.
The Delhi High Court has directed Kantar to file an affidavit on 29 January detailing its direct or indirect shareholdings in any advertising or broadcasting companies, as well as any Indian ventures, according to the Economic Times.

    Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 23-01-2014

French pay-TV Premium channel Canal+ has acquired the Israeli thriller Hostages, after inking a deal with distributor Armoza Formats and local sales partner Ace Entertainment.
The series will air on Canal+ in March, and will be the first Israeli drama picked up by the channel.

The series also has been picked up by BBC in the UK.
The original version launched on Channel 10 in Israel but a US adaptation wrapped up its 15-episode run on 14 January.

Rising Star singing competition sets off for Turkey
    Michelle Clancy | 23-01-2014

Vocal and talent competitions appear to be catching fire worldwide with Keshet International's interactive singing talent show format, Rising Star, having been snapped up by Turkey's Acun Medya who will produce the series in house.
The company has made a name in reality competitions: it also produces the Voice, Survivor and Turkey's Got Talent.
The show relies on real-time voting by viewers via a free 'TV app to you,' which is fully integrated into the show. Making their debut on stage alone, behind a giant wall of LED TV screens, a performer can only make his or her entry to the studio by securing more than 70% of the viewers', judges' and the live audiences' vote. If the bar is met, the screen (which lights up with the face of each voting viewer in real time) will slowly rise to expose the hopeful to their new fans and the judging panel.
"At Acun Medya, we're very happy to have such an innovative and exciting format as Rising Star," said Acun Ilıcalı, CEO at Acun Medya. "We believe Rising Star's technological twist is going to begin a new era in television where the audience has real-time control over the course of live programmes."
Since its launch at MIPCOM 2013, Rising Star has been picked up by more than 20 broadcasters and has quickly become an international hit. Keshet International has struck deals in territories including the US (ABC), UK (ITV), Spain (Atresmedia), Italy (Toro), France (M6 Group) Russia (Rossiya1), Germany (RTL), the Nordics (Nordisk), Hungary (TV2), and most recently Brazil (Rede Globo) and Portugal (TVI).
Interest in the format continues to grow worldwide following unprecedented ratings for the show's original series in Israel, the season finale of which peaked with a 58% share of the total domestic audience - attracting more viewers than the country's election night.
"We're delighted to announce another key sale for Rising Star in the buoyant Turkish market," said Keren Shahar, head of distribution and acquisitions at Keshet International. "With several international series now in production, the excitement has reached fever pitch and we are thrilled to see the show coming to life all over the world. I can't wait for our new viewers to experience the true exhilaration of this format."

    Michelle Clancy | 23-01-2014

Electus International is headed to Eastern climes with a multi-pronged distribution deal with Sony Pictures Television (SPT) Networks Russia.
A full 63 hours of content will air on SPT channels in Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Select programming will also air in the Baltic States: Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
Several shows will air on SPT Networks channels within the Commonwealth of Independent States: The Hero, season one; 72 Hours, season one; Duck Commander, seasons one, two and three; Unsealed: Alien Files, seasons one and two; and Buck Commander, seasons one and two.
"We are excited to confirm a deal with SPT Networks to deliver standout programming to the CIS and Baltic States, says Diego Piasek, executive director of international distribution and production at Electus International. "These shows have proven successful in the United States, and we expect them to continue to entertain audiences."
The Hero, a reality competition series starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, challenges ten competitors morally, physically and mentally to see if they have what it takes to be heroes.
72 Hours is an action-packed reality competition series that drops three competing teams of strangers into the wilderness, where they have three days to battle the elements and challenge the treacherous terrain to find the hidden briefcase full of cash.
Buck Commander, hosted by Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson, chronicles current and former MLB stars Adam LaRoche, Ryan Langerhane, Tombo Martin, as well as country music stars Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean's lives outside of the spotlight as they embark on a series of outdoor activities.
Duck Commander provides an up-close and personal, behind-the-scenes look at the Robertson family – the stars of A&E's hit TV show, Duck Dynasty.
Unsealed: Alien Files investigates recently released documents regarding alien and UFO encounters, made accessible to the US public in 2011 by the Freedom of Information Act.

Netflix Q4 surprise: profit up six-fold, over four million new subs
    Michelle Clancy | 23-01-2014

Despite worries about stagnating subscriber growth in a saturated market, Netflix grew its fourth quarter 2013 net profit six-fold from a year ago, reaching $48 million, even as its subscriber base exceeded 44 million members worldwide.
The online streaming darling handily beat Wall Street expectations, gaining 2.3 million more US subscribers in Q4 and more than four million overall. Meanwhile, revenue was up 24% year-over-year to $1.18 billion.
In terms of Q1 2014 guidance, Netflix expects to add another 2.25 million domestic customers, setting up an about 11% year-over-year increase.
The one downside is that the total number of customers still using its DVD-by-mail service fell to 6.9 million from 8.2 million a year ago.
Netflix is well aware of the potential for running out of customer acquisition steam domestically; with 110 million total TV households in the US, it's rapidly approaching a 50% penetration rate, which is far more than any of its traditional pay-TV rivals. It is keeping momentum going by trialling new pricing models, which could replace the $7.99 standard streaming with a range of options that are priced according to usage levels.
An individual plan for $6.99 allows one stream at a time from an account; and a $9.99 subscription allows for up to three people to stream on one account at the same time. The $7.99 tier allows two streams at a time; and an $11.99 per month tier, introduced earlier this year, allows for four streams at one time.
The hope is that the new levels could help Netflix move more households to the higher tiers. And, the $6.99 plan could ostensibly recoup money from those who use other people's Netflix accounts for free. It could also tease non-Netflix users into giving the service a whirl where they may not have otherwise done so.
Netflix has a tough line to walk; in a recent RBC survey, 17% of Netflix customers said they would be 'very' or 'extremely' likely to dump their subscriptions in the event of even a 13% price hike, which would bring the subscription up from $7.99 for streaming-only to about $9 per month.
But offering a range of options could help the company boost its ARPU and aid margins without pushing consumers too far.
"Eventually, we hope to be able to offer new members a selection of three simple options to fit everyone's taste," CEO Reed Hastings said during the earnings call.
Shares of Netflix skyrocketed in after-hours trading, up 18% to $392.50.

30% of French internauts use VOD
    Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 24-01-2014

Although nine out of ten (86%) French internauts know what video-on-demand (VOD) is, only 30% of them have already watched a pay-VOD show, according to Mediamétrie, adding that this ratio remains stable whereas SVOD services represent a much less significant share.
Only 3% of French webnauts do or did subscribe to a SVOD service, paying monthly fees for it.
VOD early adopters are young adults aged 25-34 as well as men.
They mostly use the TV set to watch videos, and their favourite genre is feature films. But 65% also say they watched their last video with the rest of their family.
The practice is different as far as catch-up TV is concerned, as most of the time users are alone in front of their computers (65%) and keen to order shorter programming such as TV series.
