UKTV says it achieved its highest-ever total audience share in 2013, an increase of 5% on 2012, according to BARB data.

General entertainment channel Dave – which is free-to-air on the DTT Freeview platform – became the most watched non-PSB channel. It was up 20% year over year.

UKTV, now a joint venture between BBC Worldwide and Scripps Network Interactive Inc, achieved an average share of 4.67% across the year, up 5% on 2012′s numbers, and saw its SOCI (share of commercial impacts) also grow, delivering a share of over 8.2%, building on 2012′s record figure.

Viewing numbers for Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day also broke all previous ratings records and viewing increased by 86% (year over year) across all of UKTV’s VOD platforms.

UKTV Chief Executive, Darren Childs said: “UKTV has enjoyed three successive years of viewership growth and achieving over 8.2% of all commercial impacts in the UK last year puts our business at terrestrial levels of viewership, reaching 42 million viewers every month. Audiences are rewarding UKTV’s compelling and creative programmes and brands with record ratings. This is fantastic news for our platform partners and for advertisers.”

The festive period was particularly successful for the broadcaster with Christmas Day achieving its highest ever share of total viewing at 5.49%, up 21% year-on-year, with a mix of original commissions, acquisitions and BBC content, delivered through its agreement with BBC Worldwide.

Lifestyle channel Really, the market leader in its genre, is up 7% year-on-year. It also enjoyed a strong festive period with Christmas Eve (up 42% year-on-year), Christmas Day (up 28% year-on-year), Boxing Day (up 73% year-on-year), New Year’s Eve (up 25% year-on-year) and New Year’s Day (up 21% year-on-year) proving record-breaking for the channel.

Comedy channel Gold didn’t disappoint with Christmas Eve (up 11%), Christmas Day (up 20%), and New Year’s Day (up 34%) all outperforming 2012. Gold was also the highest non-terrestrial channel in Pay TV on Christmas Day in terms of share.

Social TV: 2013's winner in Spain
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12-01-2014

2013 has been a year of growth and consolidation for social TV and second screen activity in Spain, according to the latest report from Tuitele. December figures place social TV's growth at 93.7% in 2013.
December, as well as November and October, were months of stabilisation, with around 1.3 million unique social TV viewers. The highest figures were achieved in May and June, with nearly 1.5 million users, watching TV and commenting on the shows on Twitter. The year started with 700,000 users.
Reality shows and sports are, as usual, the greatest comment-gatherers. The Voice's Spanish version had an average of nearly 400,000 comments and 130,000 social viewers per show, driving Telecinco's show to top the figures. Champions League, La Liga and Spain's Cup matches were also among the most commented upon last month.
Looking through the whole year, The Voice, Big Brother and football fight for first place of most commented broadcasts. But regarding channels, the only social leader is Mediaset's Telecinco, which gathered over 26 million tweets in 2013 (a third part of the 76 million TV-related comments) thanks to its 2.6 million social viewers. Antena 3 (10 million) and Cuatro (8 million) complete the social TV top three.

Red hot online video market breaks 50BN monthly views mark
    Editor | 12-01-2014

If the story of the future of TV will be all about UltraHD services, as shown at CES 2014, then the present is all about online video, which according to comScore is breaking new barriers.
The company's comScore Video Metrix service for December 2013 has shown that 188.2 million Americans watched 52.4 billion online content videos in the month, while the number of video ad views totalled 35.2 billion. This is the first time that online content video views have passed the 50 billion mark and represents also a huge leap on the figure set for November 2013.
As ever Google sites with YouTube to the fore dominated proceedings with 159.1 million unique viewers, with Facebook ranked second on 79.1 million viewers, closely followed by AOL with 76.2 million. The top three were some distance from fourth-placed Yahoo on 53.5 million and NDN with 49.4 million. Google Sites also generated the highest number of video content views at 13.4 billion, followed by Facebook with 3.7 billion and AOL with 1.4 billion.
comScore noted that Facebook's December 2013 online video viewership, particularly the number of video views, was substantially higher than prior months due to both organic and inorganic factors. These included the recent inclusion, following a technical validation effort, of a significant volume of short (typically 6-second) Vine videos that have been uploaded to Facebook.
As online video consumption rocketed there was a commensurate spike in associated advertising with Americans viewing nearly 35.2 billion video ads in December 2013. For the month users spent 13.2 billion minutes watching online video ads which accounted for 40.2% of all videos viewed and 5.7% of all minutes spent viewing video online.
In the monetisation stakes, AOL was top dog with 4.3 billion ad impressions followed by LiveRail.com and Google, both with 3.6 billion, SpotXchange Video Ad Marketplace with 2.9 billion and TubeMogul Video Ad Platform with 2.5 billion. The Hulu over the top (OTT) service delivered the highest frequency of video ads to its viewers with an average of 82.

Supreme Court to hear Aereo case
    JANUARY 13, 2014 09.28 EUROPE/LONDON BY ROBERT BRIEL

Aereo array of miniature antennasThe US Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal from broadcasters against a lower court decision denying their request to shut down Aereo.

Aereo founder and CEO Chet Kanojia welcomed the decision and said in a statement: “We said from the beginning that it was our hope that this case would be decided on the merits and not through a wasteful war of attrition. We look forward to presenting our case to the Supreme Court and we have every confidence that the Court will validate and preserve a consumer’s right to access local over-the-air television with an individual antenna, make a personal recording with a PVR, and watch that recording on a device of their choice.

““This case is critically important not only to Aereo, but to the entire cloud computing and cloud storage industry. The landmark Second Circuit decision in Cablevision provided much needed clarity for the cloud industry and as a result, helped foster massive investment, growth and innovation in the sector. The challenges outlined in the broadcasters’ filing make clear that they are using Aereo as a proxy to attack Cablevision itself and thus, undermine a critical foundation of the cloud computing and storage industry.”

The broadcasters, which include CBS, Fox, ABC and NBC, say the Aereo service violates their copyright as Aereo does not pay any carriage fees.
