    Dutch pubcasters drop free-to-view DTH
    JANUARY 3, 2014 13.03 EUROPE/LONDON BY ROBERT BRIEL

Ndederland 1 2 3The three Dutch public channels will end their free-to-view service on the CanalDigitaal DTH platform on August 1, 2014.

At the moment Nederland 1, 2 and 3 are available without a subscription, but viewers need a smart card from CanalDigitaal Satelliet.

The Dutch public broadcasters are paying the transponder costs, but will cease to do so because of budget cuts. CanalDigitaal will now foot the bill, but this means the end of the free-to-view situation.

The satellite provider will be making the three channels available as part of its basic bouquet, which costs €12.95 a month. The service is available on the Astra satellite at 19.2 degrees East.

First HDMI stick form factor IPTV STB with HbbTV launched
    JANUARY 3, 2014 11.18 EUROPE/LONDON BY ROBERT BRIEL

hdmi-stickNovabase Digital TV Technologies has selected Sigma Designs’ SoC and HTTV‘s Open-middleware for first HDMI Stick form factor IPTV STB with HbbTV capabilities.

Sigma Designs, a provider of System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions, has announced that Novabase Digital TV Technologies, has selected Sigma Designs’ SMP8674 media processor for its HDMI-Stick IPTV STB.

The device will debut at the 2014 CES show in Las Vegas on January 7-10, 2014, and is the first operator class HDMI-stick form factor IP-STB that is HbbTV compliant. The solution also runs httvLink middleware by the French middleware vendor HTTV.

SMP8674 is a SoC solution that operates at very low power making the HDMI stick a reality. The SDK offers support for HTML5 webkit applications and an advanced middleware porting API that has been integrated by httvLink to provide full HbbTV compatibility. The SoC is also certified for multiple CAS such as Nagravision and Verimatrix.

Novabase Digital TV Technologies, GmbH engineering was able to push the STB design into the HDMI-stick form factor. The stick includes Wi-Fi and IR control capability.

httvLink, is an HbbTV 1.5 compliant open-middleware for connected TV STBs. It makes very effective use of the resources in the HDMI-Stick STB without sacrificing user experience and offers optimal performance for the consumer. The HDMI stick is perfect candidate for streaming media player for OTT/VOD, a multi-room thin client using SAT>IP protocol or a full feature IPTV-STB.

“Novabase is excited to partner with Sigma Designs and HTTV in our innovative form factor product,” said Michael Pauli, managing director of Novabase Digital Technologies TV GmbH. “Sigma has a reputation for working with cutting edge solutions for service providers”

“We are thrilled to announce more deployments with SMP8674 SOCs in partnership with Novabase. Their achievement here with the SIP offers a high value package to operators with a perfect combination of performance, power consumption and pricing, The SMP8674 “httvLink” solution, offers best in class performance for interactive broadcast standards such as HbbTV,” said Mustafa Ozgen, GM of Home Multimedia for Sigma Designs.

“Our open framework SDK solution for SMP8674 that supports QT-Webkit enabled the fast port of httvLink middleware, and the partnership between Sigma Designs and HTTV. Pairing this with cardless CAS solutions then makes a very promising thin client to excite operators looking closely at the HDMI-stick form factor.”

“HTTV is proud to have been chosen by Novabase Technologies TV GmbH and to partner with Sigma Designs for the launch of this first HbbTV compliant HDMI dongle. It proves our strong position on the HbbTV standard and our ability to be at the forefront of innovation,” said Regis Saint Girons, HTTV’s CEO.

“Their reliable platforms and speed with which we can integrate means that we can get to market quickly with a very flexible customer solution”

A demonstration of the Sigma Designs/HTTV solution can be seen at CES in Las Vegas. (Editor’s note – HDMI stick on the picture is NOT the product, but a generic photo of a HDMI stick)

Frog by WyplayViXS and Wyplay have announced the ndustry’s first media gateway solution with full support for Ultra HD 4K and HEVC-Main 10.

ViXS’ XCode 6400 SoC combined with Frog by Wyplay Media Gateway middleware offers service providers a dynamic platform for deploying Ultra HD with legacy content support.

The solution boasts a 50% reduction in bandwidth consumption. Central to this new architecture is Frog, Wyplay’s open platform system middleware.

Using ViXS’ XCode 6400, which is sampling today and in production in Q1 2014, telco and satellite operators can deploy Ultra HD 4K content.

The XCode 6400 enables operators to reduce operating costs by taking advantage of the 50% bandwidth savings found with High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). ViXS is the first video system on a chip (SoC) provider to market with 10-bit HEVC media processing.

The high-performance transcoding capability of the XCode 6400 provides support for legacy non-HEVC devices already in the home, giving operators increased options for managing the transition to new services using Ultra HD 4K.

It is the first independent source software solution for pay-for-TV operators. Thanks to Frog by Wyplay, the full source code of Wyplay’s set-top box middleware and backend add-ons — already being deployed to more than 10 million subscribers at Canal+, Belgacom, SFR, and Vodafone — will be accessible free of charge for evaluation and development purposes.

“ViXS is delighted to be demonstrating the XCode 6400 SoC integrated with Wyplay’s media framework at CES 2014,” said David Jones, VP Marketing, ViXS Systems Inc.

“We are pleased to continue partnering with ViXS on their media software ecosystem and to play a key role in helping the industry transition to Ultra HD 4K in 2014.”

Frog By Wyplay will be officially launched at the CES Las Vegas tradeshow in January 2014. The source code and documentation will available at Join the Frog By Wyplay Community - open source middleware solution for Pay TV.

Motive inks South African VOD deal
    JANUARY 4, 2014 09.08 EUROPE/LONDON BY CHRIS DZIADUL

flag-of-south-africaMotive Television has signed a contract with Johannesburg-based Siyaya Free to Air TV (PTY) Ltd.

The deal was inked by Motive’s wholly owned subsidiary Motive Television Services and will see Motive install, integrate, and operate Siyaya’s VOD platform in conjunction with the expected launch of Siyaya’s television services on the Sentech Freevision DTH satellite service in the first half this year.

Once Siyaya has won a television licence for digital terrestrial broadcasting, and when Siyaya subsequently launches services over DTT, Motive will serve as the primary technology partner for Siyaya, providing technology solutions, products, and system integration for the implementation and continued operation of Siyaya’s VOD platform.

According to the agreement, Motive will receive upfront setup fees plus operating fees based on a share of monthly VOD platform revenues.

The contract will provide Motive a guaranteed minimum equivalent to 1.07 million (at today’s conversion rate) over the next five years.

However, as stated in the announcement dated September 16 last year, Motive estimates the probable value of the project to be approximately 2 million.

Motive and Siyaya have agreed to a period of exclusivity for the territory of South Africa for the term of the contract until and unless both parties agree to make the VOD platform available to third party broadcasters.

Commenting on the agreement, Leonard M Fertig, CEO of Motive Television PLC, said: “The completion of this Operations and Services Agreement marks another milestone in the growing partnership between Motive and Siyaya, and we look forward to the upcoming launch of Siyaya on the Freevision DTH platform. We have been working closely with Siyaya since February 2013 in the planning of their services and will now move directly into preparation for launch.

“Siyaya is a new entrant targeting the large and growing middle class in South Africa with innovative television services and is an example of the major opportunities available for Motive in supporting successful television companies in emerging markets. As Siyaya’s technology partner, Motive is able to leverage its patented technology and proprietary expertise to participate directly in the success of Siyaya’s VOD platform. The Company anticipates this model to be replicated throughout the emerging economies of Africa, South and Central America, and other regions.”

NetRange signs up 2,000 TV channels
    Jrn Krieger | 05-01-2014

NetRange, a German provider of connected TV solutions, will take around 2,000 TV channels onto its media portal for TV sets hooked up to the internet.
The owners of connected TV sets from manufacturers such as Sharp, Loewe and TLC will be able to receive the channels as OTT live streams through the internet on their TV screens.
The contracts with the broadcasters have now been signed, NetRange announced in Hamburg. The line-up includes, for example, BBC News from the UK, RAI Uno from Italy and Antena 3 from Spain as well as several sports channels.
The channels available will differ from country to country. The broadcasters don't have to pay distribution fees to NetRange, managing director Jan Wendt told German business newspaper Handelsblatt. Consumers only pay for premium content. By 2016, NetRange wants to offer 10,000 channels.
NetRange's media portal is now installed on a total of 6 to 7 million devices worldwide, according to Wendt. The reach is expected to grow to at least 30 million TV sets in the next five years based on contracts already signed with TV set manufacturers.

    Boyd assesses Polish cable
    JANUARY 6, 2014 09.11 EUROPE/LONDON BY CHRIS DZIADUL

centrum_upc_head_office_warsawConsolidation is both inevitable and necessary for the Polish cable industry, according to Simon Boyd, the outgoing president of UPC Polska, the country’s leading operator.

Speaking in a wide-range interview with UPC Polska, he added that he hoped operators would be able to convince the competition authority UOKiK of the need for further consolidation in the cable sector, given developments elsewhere in the marketplace.

A few years down the line Poland is likely to have only one strong DTH platform, one strong cable operator and one strong fixed-line operator, investing in its network.

Boyd was of the view that small cable operators would face a particular threat if Orange would start to invest in FTTH as well as vDSL.

He also said that Netia could in due course become a leading cable operator providing it buys someone, following on from its acquisitions of Dialog and Crowley, as well as part of Aster’s network.

Netia could itself become a take-over target for the likes of Orange, though that is unlikely at present.

Boyd in addition said that although linear and on demand viewing were currently complementary it was difficult to predict how things would look like in the future.

He also made the point that, like Netflix, cable operators, including UPC Polska, already invest in content.

Boyd was of the view that operator will have to compete on the basis of services and products, creating a real value for clients for which they would be willing to pay more.
