Cuba to bring DTT to half the population in 2014
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 29-12-2013
Cuba's government has decided it has had enough DTT testing and has announced it will start regular DTT broadcasts during 2014 for half of the population - some five million people. During next year, all the heads of province and the most populated towns will be covered by digital TV.
According to Justo Moreno, Radio Cuba's director, the digital signal will be extended through the country's 14 provinces. At the moment it is only available in 70 quarters of the capital Havana. During this second phase of DTT's deployment in the country, 19 new transmission centres will be installed and around 12,000 set-top-boxes (STB) will be delivered to selected towns.
Cuba's DTT, which works with the Chinese standard DTMB, has been also deployed thanks to the financial support of the Asian power. According to Moreno, the country's TV production industry will also be modernised in order to generate digital content for the new network.
The Caribbean island started the DTT transition in 2009, but only during 2013 seriously began with the network installation. In addition to the tests carried out in Havana, the production and transmission of eight channels was digitised.
Cuba plans to finished the system deployment by 2016, although the analogue switch-off is scheduled for 2021.

Breaking Bad goes on-demand on Yomvi
    Parent Category: News | 30-12-2013

Canal+ has increased its efforts to capture viewers for its new premium channel Canal+Series. In January, Breaking Bad will air on the channel and the complete series will be available on the video-on-demand (VOD) online platform Yomvi.
One of the most popular series of 2013 will be, for the first time, available complete and on-demand for Spanish audiences. Initially broadcast by Paramount Comedy, Vince Gilligan's story will now be shown in HD on Prisa's satellite and cable platform.
Breaking Bad will be available for iPlus users, on computers through Yomvi's website, and through an iOS app for iPads and smart TVs.
Since the premium channel started broadcasting in September, Canal+ has focused on international successes to strengthen its programming. Productions such as Netflix's Orange is the New Black appear to have helped Canal+Series achieve success with Spanish series fans, although no figures have been released as yet.

Al Jazeera journalists arrested by Egyptian Government
    Editor | 30-12-2013

Al Jazeera is demanding the immediate release of four of its journalists who have been arrested by Egyptian security forces.
Correspondent Peter Greste — a veteran journalist who previously worked for Reuters, CNN and the BBC — as well as producers Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed and cameraman Mohamed Fawzy were seized following what Eqypt’s interior ministry called "illegal meetings" with the Muslim Brotherhood, recently declared by Cairo as a terrorist organisation.
The arrests come on the heels of clashes between police and Muslim Brotherhood supporters across Egypt. A statement by Egypt’s interior ministry statement accused the Qatar-based news organisation of broadcasting "false news" that was "damaging to national security".
The arrests are the latest in a series of clashes between the broadcaster and the Egyptian Government. In September, Al Jazeera Media Network called in lawyers to take action over what it said was a campaign by the Egyptian Government against its journalists working in the country. In the weeks immediately following the overthrow of the Morsi Government by the Egyptian military, a large number of journalists working for Al Jazeera were arrested and detained by the security services on what the news organisation condemned as “spurious and politically motivated” charges.

Breaker raises $2MN for Japanese mobile video network
    Editor | 31-12-2013

Aiming no less than to “revolutionise” mobile video entertainment in Japan, producer and distributor Breaker has closed a seed round financing of $2 million from a number of leading venture firms.
Tokyo-based strategic consulting and business development firm Dream Incubator led the investment round, joined by Siemer Ventures and other concerns, which Breaker says will be the driving force behind a new generation of networks that produce and distribute content.
Digital media venture studio Designed for Revolution (DFR Asia), which originally conceived and launched Breaker, will play an on-going management role.
Breaker sees a huge opportunity, particularly in Japan, which on a per capita basis has the largest mobile content market in the world but, says the company, has been lagging in streaming video.
YouTube in the country has not been as prevalent as elsewhere in the world and the Hulu over-the-top (OTT) service and Amazon Instant Video have started to make inroads. It quotes industry experts predicting an explosion in the demand for streaming video, and promises to provide up-to-the-minute content to an always-connected audience. The firm will emphasise content for entertainment, music and fashion.
Commenting on the move, Alan Swarts, Breaker CEO, said: "There is a huge shift to video consumption underway in Asia that has radically altered the landscape for content distribution. Our team, with its vast experience and expertise in both established and emerging media, is uniquely qualified to fulfil the surging demand with ground-breaking content. Our goal is to deliver a major new category of content specifically for this new generation of mobile media consumers."

State TV stormed in wave of attacks in DR Congo
    Rebecca Hawkes | 31-12-2013

Assailants stormed the RTNC building in Kinshasa, temporarily holding hostage reporters for the Democratic Republic of Congo's state broadcaster, on 30 December 2013.
The intruders were armed with machetes and guns, police spokesman Colonel Mwana Mputu told AFP.
Two frightened young presenters were seen on screen with a threatening young male assailant before the RTNC television feed was cut.
"We don't have the impression that the attackers had any other objective – in such small numbers, with such weak weaponry – but to seek ... to spread panic and terror on the eve of the New Year's festivities," Government spokesman Lambert Mende told AFP once the TV link was restored.
Eight attackers were killed at RTNC premises by security forces, along with 16 during "well- orchestrated" assaults at the international airport, and 16 at the capital's military headquarters, he added.
The mineral-rich African country has faced turmoil in its eastern provinces for many years, however Kinshasa has remained largely conflict-free.

Appeal court suspends Kenya's digital TV migration
    Rebecca Hawkes | 31-12-2013

The Nation Media Group, Royal Media Services and the Standard Group have been granted a reprieve in their fight to halt the migration to digital terrestrial television (DTT), a process that the Kenyan Government started on 27 December 2013.
Judges Alnashir Visram, Paul Kihara and Hannah Okwengu held that three media houses, which are challenging the move to DTT, have an arguable case. They have granted a temporary order for the Communications Commission of Kenya (CKK) and the Ministry of Information to reinstate analogue TV signals until the case can be heard in February.
"We are restraining the second and third respondents from switching of the frequencies', broadcasting spectrums, and broadcasting services and if already switched off to reinstate the same pending the hearing and determination of the appeal on or before 6 February 2014," said Justice Kihara.
Representing the three media houses, lawyer Paul Muite argued that his clients will lose goodwill and advertising revenues to foreign broadcasters when their analogue frequencies are switched off.
A Broadcasting Bill should have been introduced to create an independent broadcasting authority, argues Muite, rather than the Government-run CKK spearheading the country's transition to digital broadcasting.
The three media houses were not given digital transmission licences, and instead pay-TV companies Signet Kenya, China's Star Times Media, Pan Africa Network Group and GoTv Kenya Ltd are – they claim – rebroadcasting their signals without permission or compensation, reports The Star.
However, the CCK and Attorney General Githu Muigai argue the Nation Media Group, Royal Media Services and the Standard Group were twice issued with licences that they rejected, and that they were represented on all digital migration committees. The Government bodies allege the three media groups even agreed to an analogue switch-off date, and say that therefore their court action is hypocritical.
Following the ruling on 27 December, Information Communications and Technology Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi tweeted: "My ministry will unfailingly and unreservedly comply with the Court of Appeal order halting digital migration."
The appeal will be heard on 6 February 2014.

Audiovox mobile TV to support Kindle Fire
    Editor | 31-12-2013

In a telling expansion of its business, Audiovox mobiletv, the Dyle-enabled wireless mobile TV receiver, has been made compatible with Kindle HD Fire tablets.
The new compatibility, made possible through a chipset from mobile TV pioneer Siano, complements existing iOS and Android smartphones and tablet availability for the free live TV service. Dyle comprises a joint venture of 12 major broadcast groups, available in 38 US markets, reaching 57% of the country.
Content delivered includes live broadcast TV such as local and national news, sports and entertainment programming to mobile devices. Audiovox mobiletv includes a programme guide, pause and rewind features, and an internal battery providing up to four hours of television viewing.
"The ability to add Amazon Kindle Fire users expands the growing list of consumers who want the live TV experience at their fingertips and provides our retail partners with another compelling reason to support the product," explained Audiovox president Tom Malone. "We believe this development, combined with the continued addition of stations and markets, makes this a must-have product for consumers who want to enjoy their favourite programming across multiple screens while at home or on-the-go."
"With the additional compatibility across Amazon Kindle HD Fire tablets, Dyle mobile TV technology will reach a new target audience that values a range of content on their mobile devices," added Erik Moreno, co-general manager of Mobile Content Venture, the joint venture’s title.

Stream TV to debut 3D-enabled 4K UltraHD TV sets
    Michelle Clancy | 31-12-2013

Stream TV Networks is marrying consumer-ready 4K TVs with 3D: its Ultra-D glasses-free adjustable 3D technology has been ported to 50" and 55" TV models, set to debut at CES 2014.
Some of the TVs will be accompanied by the seeCube-4K, an external device that converts a wide range of content – 2D or 3D stereoscopic sources – to 2160p glasses-free 3D in real time. Stream TV has added its real-time conversion technology to the new Qualcomm 8074 processor, and a second version of the TV will carry the conversion technology built into a chip, significantly reducing costs.
The Ultra-D technology converts 1080p/two million pixel content into a 4K/eight million pixel viewing experience. Users can connect their satellite or cable service, VOD, Blu-ray player, Xbox or PlayStation, as well as watch Internet content from Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Baidu TV, PPStv, iQYi tv, Totou TV and other video sites.
Qualcomm's latest 8074 processor features the new Krait 400 CPU in quad configuration, with speeds of up to 2.3GHz per core for best-in-class performance per watt, so processor performance can hold up to the more demanding processing. The new Adreno 330 GPU delivers more than two times the performance for compute applications over the current Adreno 320 GPU, capturing playback and display in 2160p video.
"Ultra-D presents a never-before-seen glasses-free 3D viewing experience," said Mathu Rajan, CEO of Stream TV Networks. "There's a lack of 4K content out there, but by generating millions of new pixels with depth information, we truly take advantage of what a 4K screen can offer."

Half of Americans willing to work out when binge watching
    JANUARY 1, 2014 12.18 EUROPE/LONDON BY ROBERT BRIEL

Netflix work outBinge watching may be the new normal, but in 2014 a surprising number of people are willing to get off the couch for all that TV viewing.

According to a recent survey among 1,000 US internet users conducted by Netflix, more than 50% of respondents were willing to exercise while binge watching instead of slouching on the couch.

In the same survey, nearly half (45%) of respondents agreed they would be more motivated to exercise if they had access to their favorite TV shows on-demand and commercial free while working out. Sitcoms come out on top as the favorite genre to watch while working up a sweat, with more than one in three (36%) choosing humor over serialized dramas (27%), Sci-Fi/fantasy (24%) or reality shows (20%).

Harley Pasternak, celebrity fitness expert and New York Times bestselling author, is working with Netflix to remind people how incorporating entertainment into your workout can jump start your New Year’s resolution.

“I call it the Netflix fitness effect,” said Pasternak. “My clients have been working out with Netflix for years. It makes cardio feel easier and less boring. Whether you’re watching at home doing resistance exercises or taking your tablet or phone to the gym, Netflix gives people an extra reason to sweat.”

“Not only does it make your workouts easier, but you end up looking forward to them more,” Pasternak said. “If you can only watch ‘Breaking Bad’ when you’re on the treadmill, you’re going to find yourself wishing there were more hours in the day to workout.”
