    ProSiebenSat.1 sells CEE portfolio
    December 23, 2013 13.43 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Building-ProSiebenSat.1The German ProSiebenSat.1 Group has sold its interests in Central and Eastern Europe.
The broadcaster sold Kiss TV as well as the radio stations Kiss FM, Magic FM, One FM and Rock FM to the Greek Antenna Group, while its TV channel Prima TV was sold to the Romanian media businessman Cristian Burci.
The Romanian acquisition by Antena is the latest stage of the Greek broadcaster’s plan to enter new markets in South East Europe. The group has indicated that it is preparing to further expand geographically based on recent successes such as its investments in PRVA Montenegro, Planet TV in Slovenia and PRVA Televisija in Serbia.
Theo Kyriakou, CEO, Antena Group, said in a statement: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to acquire these market leading assets in a country as significant as Romania. These represent Antenna’s first presence in Romania and we look forward to working closely with management to help them grow even further. Antenna Group is committed to expanding its presence in South East Europe. This is the latest stage in our growth strategy.”
In Hungary, the TV channels TV2, FEM 3, PRO4 and Super TV2 were acquired by the current management team.
The deals were signed late last week, on December 20 and December 21 respectively. All deals will be closed in the first quarter of 2014.
The German private broadcaster is now focusing on its German language activities. In December 2012 ProSiebenSat.1 sold its Nordic channels to Discovery, while it shed its Belgian and Dutch assets in April 2011.

French Conseil d’Etat cancels D8’s acquisition by Canal+
    Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 25-12-2013

As expected, the French State Council (Conseil d’Etat) has cancelled the acquisition of free DTT channel D8, and D17 both formerly owned by Bolloré, by Canal+ Group.
This acquisition, which was submitted to the respect by Vivendi’s subsidiary of a number of obligations, had been given the green light in September 2012 by both French regulator CSA and the country’s Competition Authority.
The French State Council based its current decision on the fact that this green light shows “irregularities” and is “partially illegal in the substance.” The Council requires Canal+ to strengthen broadcast obligations for French films.
The decision will not apply before 1 July 2014. Canal+ Group then has six months to ask the CSA and Competition Authority for a new authorisation to and submit again. This has been seized on by groups TF1 and M6. The French State Council has given credit to both broadcasters whose complaint is mainly based on audiovisual rights and Canal+’s capacity to acquire movies and TV series.

    RCS&RDS stops Eurosport transmissions
    December 27, 2013 09.16 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Digi TVRCS&RDS has decided to cease transmission of Eurosport in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia while at the same time continuing to offer the channel in Romania.
In a statement, RCS&RDS says that it currently has a retransmission agreement for international versions of Eurosport and Eurosport 2 in the four countries.
However, on December 21 Europort decided to replace the international versions, which offered football matches from the Premier League, with a new channel called Europort Romania, to be broadcast to RCS&RDS subscribers in all four countries.
RCS&RDS says it then began to receievc complaints from its customers – the move affected around one million – who were being offered the new channel in Romanian rather than their own language.
It also points out that Eurosport only has the rights to show Premier League matches in Romania and not the other three countries.
RCS&RDS adds: “The decision RCS&RDS took into account both the interests of consumers in all countries where we operate , but also took into account the rights of the license for Premier League matches in Hungary , Czech Republic and Slovakia.
“We believe that Eurosport bears complete responsibility both to subscribers and to these licence holders.”

‘Game of Thrones’ most pirated TV-Show in 2013
    December 28, 2013 08.26 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Game-of-Thrones-Season-3-Tyrion-BronnGame of Thrones has the honour of becoming the most downloaded TV-show for the second year in a row, according to the TorrentFreak website.
With 5.9 million downloads via BitTorrent, the 2013 season finale even beat the number of legitimate viewers in the US, 5.5 million. This does not include viewers worldwide. More than half of the downloads occurred in the first week after the show aired.
The number two spot was taken by AMC’s Breaking Bad, with 4.2 million downloads (as com0ared to 10.28 million regular views) and at number three Fox’s The Walking Dead with 3.6 million downloads (compared to 16.11 million).
reactions to the enormous extent of piracy for some popular programmes receives mixed reaction from the makers. Game of Thrones director David Petrarca previously admitted that piracy generated much-needed ‘cultural buzz’ around his show.
Jeff Bewkes, CEO of HBO’s parent company Time Warner, went even further, stating that receiving the title of ‘most-pirated’ was ‘better than an Emmy.’
But others are more critical, such as Gale Anne Hurd, executive producer of The Walking Dead, who told Variety last week that unauthorised downloads are not necessarily the blessing others claim they are.
“There’s a mistaken belief by many of my peers that piracy is somehow good, that viewers will develop a habit to pay for it. I’m not sure they really understand other than anecdotal evidence that their ratings go up that the people who pirate are not then going to choose legal downloads or legal viewing in the future,” Hurd said.
The remainder of the Top Ten is made up of 4) The Big Bang Theory (3.4 million); 5 Dexter (3.1 million); 6) How I Met Your Mother (3 million); 7) Suits (2.6 million); 9) Vikings (2.3 million); and 10) Arrow (2.2 million)
