    BT Sport overtakes predecessors
December 4, 2013 11.15 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul, Digital TV World Summit 2013, London

bt-sport-football-flagsBT Sport’s initial viewing figures for Premier League football games compare very favourably with those previously achieved by such companies as ESPN and Setanta.
What is more, on a typical Saturday or Sunday another 100,000 users now watch content through its app.
Speaking in a presentation entitled Examining the growing role of premium content, Simon Green, head of sport, BT Sport, said that the first Premier League match it showed at the start of the current season in August attracted 900,000 viewers, while the most recent (Tottenham v Man United, on Sunday, December 1) had 1.1 million viewers.
Green said that BT identified sport as the best content to acquire in the short term to build its premium TV business and had committed £2 billion so far, along with £3 billion towards its fibre-optic broadband rollout.
He added that in a market that is dominated by a broadcaster for 20 years BT had no credibility this time last year.
It also accepts that it is still building its credibility.
After 17 weeks BT Sport is focused on what it is doing itself and ultimately wants to improve the public’s perception.
Looking to the future, BT Sport plans to acquire more content.
Furthermore, with the Champions League coming up, it will come up with ideas of how to support it digitally and with the use of the second screen.
The company has to think strategically and creatively at the same time.
Green also said it was important not to put everything behind a paywall.
BT Sport in addition took to a long term view when acquiring content.

Midsomer MurdersCirkus, the subscription on-demand television service that offers viewers the ‘Best of British’ television, has launched on Com Hem.
The service went live Wednesday as part of the Swedish cabler’s recently introduced TiVo offer.
“The idea with TiVo is to offer our customers the best TV experience possible by combining great content with smart functionality,” said Com Hem’s director of TV and content, Simon Gate. “With Cirkus we are adding whole seasons of some of the most successful TV dramas in Sweden.”
Cirkus has long-term access to programming from the UK’s two largest broadcasters – ITV and the BBC as well as the UK’s largest independent production company – All3Media, ensuring that the service will always include the latest and very best of British television. A+E’s History launches alien attack war game
    December 5, 2013 10.26 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The Great Martian WarHistory, part of A+E Networks UK, is launching The Great Martian War 1913-17, a mobile game for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that pits soldiers against an alien invasion, inspired by the premiere of the channel’s landmark television programme of the same name.
The Great Martian War game is a freemium app (releasing on other platforms in early 2014) and immerses players into the horrors of The Great Martian War in a re-imagined and unique perspective of the challenges faced by soldiers in The First World War.
With immersive 3D visuals and sound effects, the game starts in No Man’s Land of the Euro-Martian front and offers players virtually endless gameplay as they take on the aliens and attempt to defend the earth.
Running through vast battlefields, avoiding obstacles and collecting rations and upgrades along the way, players will be able to buy advanced features that allow them to progress further in the game.
Caroline Casey, director of digital media at A+E Networks UK, said: “The Great Martian War is a high-quality endless running game that takes players into an imagined war zone, with distinct parallels with the experiences faced by soldiers in The Great War. This game marks the expansion of HISTORY UK into the gaming world, as we develop broader and more innovative ways of engaging with a younger audience.”
The Great Martian War game was developed by Secret Location for History Canada, and is inspired by the special TV event of the same title. Co-commissioned by History Canada and History UK, The Great Martian War 1913-1917 fuses drama and documentary and will premiere on History in the UK on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 8pm.
The Great Martian War 1913-17 App is available free from the App Store on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

    Raduga TV takes evasive action
    December 6, 2013 11.22 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Russian DTH platform Raduga TV may have found a way to avoid the threat of criminal proceedings initiated by the federal executive authority Roskomnadzor.
According to AKTR and tdaily, it has registered what will be two proprietary channels – Raduga 24, which will be information-based, and Otbornoe TV – and will now seek to obtain licences for them.
By registering the channels, Raduga TV, which is jointly owned by Modern Times Group (MTG) and Continental Multimedia, will hope to circumvent the threat from Roskomnadzor, demonstrating that it is operating within a licensed framework despite allegedly not having a licence for satellite TV broadcasting.
Most other DTH platforms, including the market leader Tricolor TV and NTV-Plus, the longest established, already have a large portfolio of proprietary channels.

NatGeo to highlight India in the 1980s
    Rebecca Hawkes | 07-12-2013

A one hour special called The 80s: India, covering key events in the country’s politics, economics, TV, film and sport, will premiere on 7 December on the National Geographic Channel.
The show, which follows the channel’s six part series The 80s, will look back at key moments on Indian soil during the decade. The change in the political landscape following the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the advent of colour television, and India’s Cricket World Cup victory in 1983, are just three of the era-defining events explored.
“We received a great response to The 80s series which covered a lot of what the world saw in the decade. Taking the thought forward, ‘The 80s India’ deep dives into what was shaking, shaping and rocking our country during the decade. From nostalgia to information – this special has a lot for the viewer of today,” said Debarpita Banerjee, Vice President, Marketing, National Geographic and Fox International Channels.
Interviews with journalists, culturists, filmmakers and researchers – including Mahesh Bhatt, Santosh Desai, Vinod Dua, Subhash Ghai, Anurag Kashyap - will be interspersed with archive footage and photographs.
The 80s: India will be shown on the National Geographic Channel at 10pm on Saturday 7 December.
