Media Broadcast to launch multithek on Astra
    Jörn Krieger | 03-12-2013

German technical service provider Media Broadcast will make its multithek interactive multimedia service available to DTH satellite households when it launches on Astra (19.2° East) on 3 December.
The hybrid solution, distributed within the Media Broadcast platform on transponder 113 (12.633 GHz H, SR 22,000, FEC 5/6), will enable satellite viewers to access, for example, the catch-up TV services operated by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF and commercial TV group ProSiebenSat.1 and music TV channel Muzu.TV on their conventional TV sets through the Internet.
The latest addition is the video-on-demand service Kymba which offers commercial-free movies and series for children in several European languages. Access to Kymba costs €5 per month. The programmes can also be ordered and paid for individually.
The move marks the first time that fee-based content is available at multithek. Another addition are games which can directly be accessed and played with the remote control.
To use multithek, a TV set with an integrated satellite receiver is needed or a set-top box compliant with multimedia standard HbbTV and connected to the Internet. The data rate should be at least 2Mbps.
Media Broadcast launched the multithek for DTT households in February 2013. The company indicated at that time that the service would be rolled out on further distribution platforms including cable and satellite.

Belgian broadcasters launch common TV Everywhere service
    December 3, 2013 09.35 Europe/London By Robert Briel

stievieThe three main Dutch language Belgian brodcasters are launching Stievie, their common TV everywhere service on Friday, December 6.
Public broadcaster VRT, and private VMMa and SBS Belgium are launching the subscription service to the general public after a pilot with 10,000 users. Monthly fee is €9.99.
Stevie allows viewers to see live streams of the broadcasters’ channels as well as catch-up programmes up to seven days after the original broadcast. Not all programmes will be available as catch-up, as rights to most TV series and movies are not included.
The channels available are Een, Canvas, Ketnet/Op12 from VRT, VTM, 2BE, Jim, Vitaya, and VTM Kzoom from VMMA and Vier and Vijf from SBS Belgium. Reception is possible on iOS and Android devices via WiFi or a 3G/4G network.
Broadband TV Views. The announcement comes at the same time as the broadcasters said they will take legal action against the cloud PVR service Bhaadu and OTT platform Weepee TV said it will pull the plug on its service because of the high minimum guarantees asked by the channels.
This begs the question – what are the motives behind the broadcasters’ moves against Bhaalu and WeePeeTV? By bundling together the three main Dutch language broadcasters onto a single platform they form an oligarchy in the TV Everywhere/OTT space. In a fair and open market, other platforms should be able to compete on an equal footing.
What are the chances of success for Stievie? The first signs are not encouraging: both Belgacom TV and Telenet already have their own TV Everywhere service, which is included in the subscription. And in the French-speaking part public broadcaster RTBF abandoned its Nomade TV service, which uses the same apps as Stievie, citing lack of interest from consumers.

    Succsessful Falcon launch for SES-8

    December 4, 2013 07.53 Europe/London By Robert Briel

SES-8-Falcon-9The SES-8 satellite was successfully launched into space at 17:41 EST (23:41 CET) from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral.

A Falcon 9 booster operated by SpaceX successfully injected the SES-8 satellite into geostationary transfer orbit, 31 minutes after lift-off, in what was SES’s maiden use of a SpaceX/Falcon 9 rocket. SES has three more SpaceX/Falcon 9 boosters under contract.

SES-8 was manufactured by Orbital Sciences Corporation. The satellite features up to 33 Ku-band transponders (36 MHz equivalent). SES-8 is authorized by The Netherlands and will be co-located with NSS-6 at the orbital location of 95 degrees East to provide growth capacity over Asia-Pacific. The spacecraft’s high performance beams will support the rapidly growing markets in South Asia and Indo-China, as well as provide expansion capacity for DTH, VSAT and government applications.

“SES’s maiden launch on board a Falcon 9 rocket is yet another example of our company’s spirit of innovation and advancement of the commercial space industry. We congratulate the SpaceX team for the success of a challenging launch campaign and our longstanding supplier Orbital for innovating with us in exploring new paths to orbit while delivering a brand-new, state-of-the-art satellite for Asia,” said Romain Bausch, president and CEO of SES.

“Our customers are looking forward to the new capacity, and we are delighted that SES, in collaboration with SpaceX and Orbital, is all set to deliver following today’s successful launch. Through the co-location with NSS-6 at 95 degrees East, SES-8 will not only provide incremental high performance capacity, notably for DTH services, it will also create greater reliability and additional security for customers. The SES-8 satellite will significantly contribute to SES’s growing presence in Asia-Pacific.”

“Today’s successful insertion of the SES-8 satellite marks SpaceX’s first geo-synchronous transfer mission and confirms the Falcon 9 launch vehicle lives up to the industry’s highest performance standards,” said Elon Musk, CEO and Chief Designer of SpaceX.

“As always, SpaceX remains committed to delivering the safest, most reliable launch vehicles on the market today. We appreciate SES’s early confidence in SpaceX and look forward to launching additional SES satellites in the years to come.”

LG connects devices to its smart TVs

    December 4, 2013 07.49 Europe/London By Robert Briel

LG Electronics will be the first company to incorporate the AllJoyn open source software framework into its Smart TV platform.

AllJoyn[20131204082843177]AllJoyn, developed by Qualcomm Innovation Center, is designed to create a common language that seamlessly connects the Internet of Things, regardless of brand or operating system. This new multi-device environment opens up a raft of possibilities for LG Smart TV owners giving users a new level of interoperability between devices..

“LG is at the forefront of the device connectivity revolution,” said Richard Choi, SVP of the Smart Business Center at LG Electronics.

“LG will now enable consumers to more effortlessly connect their networked devices in the home and continues to show a strong commitment to the next generation of convergence technology.”

The software’s framework enables devices and apps to freely communicate with one another without the barriers that once kept operating systems and products from different companies separate. It will afford LG Smart TV users a previously unimaginable degree of freedom and generate new opportunities for app developers as well.

LG will incorporate AllJoyn to allow multiple devices to communicate with LG Smart TVs simultaneously, creating an expansive cross-OS environment where users can interact in new ways. Several smartphones or tablets, each running a completely different OS, can participate in the same multiplayer game on an LG Smart TV.

In Mini Motor Racing, one person could steer his or her car around the track using the LG Magic Remote while the other players control their vehicles via the LG Gamepad app for mobile devices. Looking forward, LG will continue to drive future innovation in consumer services that leverage the communication between devices and LG Smart TV’s.

“LG sees great potential and huge possibilities in connecting multiple display products with one TV,” added LG’s Mr. Choi. “Facilitating true smart home convergence, LG Smart TVs will now be able to seamlessly connect to devices regardless of brand or OS, a first-of-its-kind milestone in the home entertainment industry.”
