    Parent Category: News | 24-11-2013

French telco SFR has announced it will be "the first operator in Europe to offer a set-top box based on Android 4.2, giving access to Google Play services on television".
Priced at an additional €3 per month, the hybrid box is available from 19 November and is set to enrich the TV experience, mixing TV with the best of web.
Customers will be able to continue receiving up to 25 channels of terrestrial broadcast TV along with their associated catch-up services as well as Internet radio channels and SFR Video Club that lines-up more than 3,000 pieces of VOD content.
But the Android box also includes Google services such as Google Voice Search, YouTube and Google Play Movies, and other applications from the Google Play Store.
The new STB mainly targets customers who can't receive ADSL TV, but it also can be used by IPTV customers seeking more Web services, or as a second TV home gateway as the box is compatible with all others.

Intel is asking for $500M for TV business
    November 26, 2013 08.02 Europe/London By Robert Briel

intel-screenBloomberg reports Intel has set an asking price of $500M for the assets of its would-be Web TV service, and is hoping to reach a deal by year’s end.
According to Bloomberg Verizon is looking to use the Intel’s TV platform as a springboard to offer its own web TV service, one that would expand its TV footprint to areas not covered by its FiOS network.
Verizon has reportedly been asking content owners if it would need new contracts to offer a Web TV service, or if it could simply amend its FiOS deals.
Earlier, Bloomberg also reported that John Malone’s Liberty Global was interested in acquiring the fledgling TV business from Intel. Korean manufacturer Samsung was also said to be interested in acquiring the business.
Called OnCue, the company has been developing its own over-the-top TV platform with a new UI and a cloud PVR for its service. The company hired Erik Huggers to run the project. However, since Intel’s new CEO Brrian M. Krzanich took the reins, the company has been trying to offload the TV business.
Broadband TV Views. Intel retracting from the TV business is yet another example of a relative outsider who thought it could game change the TV business by setting up an OTT TV platform.
One of the reason the venture did not materialise were the financial demands the rights holders were making – forcing Intel to spend hundreds of millions of dollars before even starting the business.
Microsoft and Google also tried their luck jun entering the TV business and so far have not been very successful.
And so far Apple TV never materialized except for Steve Jobs’ hobby project Apple TV set-top box.
All these instances show that the traditional TV business (and for that matter, also the Hollywood movie studios) seem determined to keep new players out of the market – or at least make life very difficult for them.

    MTG platform faces legal action
    November 26, 2013 11.00 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Raduga-TV_picarchModern Times Group (MTG)-backed Russian DTH platform Raduga TV is facing the prospect of criminal proceedings initiated by the federal executive authority Roskomanadzor.
In a statement, Roskomnadzor says that Raduga TV is operating without a licence and there are “substantial grounds for a criminal case under Article 171 of the Criminal Code”.
It adds that this summer its territorial administration, during an audit of DalGeoKom, found a violation of Art 31 of the Russian media law, dated December 27, 1991.
The company had no broadcast licence to distribute satellite TV channels using limited radio frequency resources.
DalGeoKom was then given a month to eliminate violations but failed to comply. It was then fined R40,000 (€ ) after a ruling by the Moscow Arbitration Court on October 25.
Roskomanadzor now says that in accordance with the federal mass media law DalGeoKom should issue its own licence or enter into contracts with broadcasters.
At the same, it can only have a licence for satellite broadcasting using limited radio frequencies by winning a competition for such frequencies organized by the Federal Tender Broadcasting Commission.
Raduga TV was launched in 2009 and ended last year with 421,000 subscribers.
It is jointly owned and controlled by MTG and Continental Media S.A.
