OnDIRECTV brings the Town, and JFK biography to Latin America
    Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 22-11-2013

OnDIRECTV is bringing two new series to Latin America: the three-part British miniseries the Town, and a retrospective of JFK's life.
The Town has received comparisons to Twin Peaks, David Lynch's classic television series. Irish actor Andrew Scott plays Mark, who is forced to return to his hometown of Seattle after spending the last ten years in London. The catalyst is the suicide of Mark's parents; but much has changed since his departure. His grandmother now lives in Mark's old room, he has a teenage sister that he hardly knows, he finds it impossible to reconnect with old friends, and Alice, his first love, is now married and a mother.
OnDIRECTV is also showcasing a history of the 35th President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, dubbed Cold Case: JFK.
The second-youngest (after Teddy Roosevelt) and the only non-Protestant to have reached the position, his term was marked by heady historical events such as the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the march on Washington led by Martin Luther King Jr and the beginning of the Vietnam War. This month marks the 50th anniversary of his assassination in Dallas on 22 November 1963.
Cold Case tries to find an answer to many of the puzzles and conspiracies surrounding his death that have fired imaginations for decades. A team of forensic experts use the latest technology to reconstruct and review evidence about the events that occurred on that fateful afternoon in Texas.

Hybrid approach for new Polish channel
    November 23, 2013 01.46 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Stopklatka TVThe new film-based Polish national channel Stopklatka TV will from the onset be a hybrid TV service, being available to viewers across a range of devices.
This, according to Wawrzyniec Brach, its programming director, speaking to Wirtualne Media, will be one of the ways it will differ from other film channels already available in the country.
Brach added that he expects Stopklatka TV to make its debut on cable and satellite by the end of February 2014 and on Poland’s first DTT multiplex once the public broadcaster TVP vacates a slot.
This by law should take place by April 28, 2014 at the latest.
Brach also said that Stopklatka TV is initially aiming to secure an audience share of 1-2%, with the figure eventually rising to 3-4%.

BT to run low cost path to YouView
    November 23, 2013 01.44 Europe/London By Julian Clover

BT says that it will use its low-cost Plusnet brand to launch a low-cost offer for the YouView broadband platform that will compete with TalkTalk.
From what was effectively a standing start, TalkTalk has secured 500,000 TV customers – more than BT has moved to YouView.
“If you want to be a scale player in the broadband industry, you have to have a triple-play offering,” chief executive Gavin Patterson, told the Financial Times “Providing a TV alternative?.?.?.?for Plusnet is definitely part of our plans.”
Plusnet started life in 1997, based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. It floated on the alternative investment market in July 2004 and was acquired by BT three years later, though still operates independently.
Plusnet also operates the Metronet brand in the UK.

    Moscow broadband competition intensifies
    November 23, 2013 09.06 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

russia-flagThe Moscow City Telephone Network (MGTS) has increased the maximum internet access speed it offers residential customers from 200 Mbps to 350 Mbps.
Vedomosti reports that by doing so the company is aiming to attract active and highly profitable customers as this is now the fastest internet service available to users in the Russian capital.
MGTS currently claims a 26% share of the Moscow broadband market and would like to double this to 50% by the end of 2016.
Meanwhile, in the corporate sector, where it is now offering customers up to 500 Mbps, MGTS wants to increase its share from 5% to 30% within four years.
At least one of MGTS’ competitors – the cable operator – is also likely to significantly increase its internet access speeds in the near future.
This will be from a current maximum of 110 Mbps to 400Mbps following a network upgrade.

Doctor Who prepares to zap 3D and BBC Red Button
    November 23, 2013 09.03 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Day of the DoctorThis weekend the BBC will broadcast the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who. The long-running sci-fi drama is about to outlive two BBC projects by some considerable margin.
The Day of the Doctor, to be broadcast on Saturday evening, will be carried in the 3D format and broadcast over the BBC’s Red Button HD channel.
The latter is being dropped ahead of HD simulcasts of BBC News, BBC Three, BBC Four, CBBC and CBeebies. 3D is also set the fade away the BBC having chosen to bring its ‘experiment’ to an end.
“In terms of making best use of the capacity we can afford, the five channels each attract more viewers,” said distribution director Alex Pryde in a blog post. “However, it’s our ambition to repeat our experiment with pop-up streams in 2014, delivering more choice in an agile way around major sporting and cultural events. And we will continue to keep under review the value for money of expanding our HD offer in the future”.
Capacity used by Red Button HD will be given over to BBC News HD on satellite and BBC Three HD and CBBC HD. While there is no official launch date for the new channels, Broadband TV News reported earlier this week that tests are underway. On Freeview, the commercial Al Jazeera English HD is also making test transmissions.
Over the past few months the BBC has experimented with the use of the so-called Pop Up Streams for events including Wimbledon, Glastonbury and The BBC Proms.
Pryde said more than 3.5m viewers used the HD red button stream across Freeview HD/Youview, Virgin Media and Freesat.
During Wimbledon alone, 1.2m people tuned into BBC Red Button HD (with a total of 7.7m million people using the red button to access the additional matches overall; the highest ever for Wimbledon).

Amazon takes LOVEFiLM to Xbox One
    Editor | 24-11-2013

As the games platform hurtles off shelves, Microsoft’s new generation all-in-one gaming and entertainment system, Xbox One, is to offer films and TV shows from Amazon's LOVEFiLM Instant streaming catalogue.
Available now from the Xbox One App Marketplace, the LOVEFiLM Instant app features 1080P high definition streaming, Dolby Digital Plus (5.1) surround sound, the Watchlist – allowing members to organise the film and TV shows they want to watch at a later date – and Whispersync technology allowing users to pause and resume viewing on another device.
The online video app will also support a variety of new Xbox One features such as ‘snap’ and ‘fill’ modes designed to allow members to view content from a side panel on the screen while navigating other menus, games or apps in the main window. Achievements and Challenges are also supported with members able to earn badges by fulfilling actions such as adding titles to their WatchList or watching new releases.
The Xbox One’s Kinect motion sensor can also be used to enhance the viewing experience by allowing navigation around the LOVEFiLM Instant catalogue. Users can browse, select and move through content with the wave of a hand, while voice commands are also supported.
"The next generation of video game consoles is a fantastically exciting prospect for LOVEFiLM members in the UK," commented LOVEFiLM, Chief Marketing Officer Simon Morris. "Accessing and discovering quality content will be easier and even more intuitive than ever before.”

DigiWorld 2013 emphasises importance of 4G, 5G and cloud for telcos
    Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 24-11-2013

At the close of the DigiWorld Summit 2013 yesterday (21 November), telcos were urged to deploy fibre technology, 4G and 5G as effectively as possible.
With the theme The Digital Goldmines, the Idate-organised summit in Montpellier stated that the telecommunications industry is at a crossroads, and has to push on by reinventing its 'footprint' and business models.
"Some players are seeing their revenues erode and wondering where the value is," said Idate CEO Yves Gassot. "Others are questioning the digital ecosystem's real contribution to growth. Yet the multifarious innovations surrounding the Internet and digital technologies are unearthing rich new veins ripe for mining."
In his speech, Dor Skuler, vice president and general manager of the CloudBand business unit at Alcatel-Lucent, also added that telecoms firms must embrace the cloud and learn from their OTT rivals. "We have given our lunch to the OTTs," he said, adding that the telecoms industry must rejuvenate and update "1990s' solutions".
Dor Skuler urge telcos to "embrace the cloud as the best way to get back on track, since it can be highly scalable, fully automated, open source and inexpensive".
