Spacecom fixes Amos 5 power problem
    November 1, 2013 09.53 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Amos MCRSpacecom has resolved a power supply issue that had threatened to shorten the lifespan of the recently launched Amos 5 satellite by some 11 months.
The Israeli satellite operator says it has found alternative means to operate the satellite’s engines that would make it possible to bypass the power supply.
A breakdown in the second power supply had left only half of the craft’s eight engines operational.
Shares in Spacecom regained some of the losses felt in the immediate period following the initial declaration of the problem one week ago, but remain 20% down on the year.
Amos 5 launched on December 11, 2011 after the late delivery of the satellite by manufacturer Russian Information Satellite Systems.
The satellite has a pan-African C-band and Ku-band payload. It is positioned at 17 degrees East.

    Bosnia imposes cable carriage ban
    November 1, 2013 09.29 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Cable operators in Bosnia & Herzegovina have been prohibited from rebroadcasting the Croatian station Nova TV.
According to Seebiz, the ban has been imposed with immediate effect by the Communications Regulatory Authority (RAK) of Bosnia & Herzegovina, the regulator having previously written to cable operators and relevant regulatory agencies requesting that the channel is no longer distributed.
Failure to comply with the ban could lead to the imposition of fines of up to KM150,000 (€76,685).
AKOP, the cable association in Bosnia & Herzegovina, says it is currently negotiating with Nova TV through a legal representative.
Although AKOP says it has all the necessary copyright agreements in place for its members to rebroadcast Nova TV, this is something the Croatian station denies.

    Mixed picture within TDC
    November 1, 2013 09.07 Europe/London By Julian Clover

A case of swings and roundabouts for TDC’s dual brand strategy. The Danish telco grew the number of customers to TDC TV by 1.3 percentage points, but these were more of less ofset by the 25,000 decline at cablenet YouSee caused by the loss of organised customers.
Despite this revenues and gross profit increased across all brands. TV ARPU decreased by DKK6 vs. Q2, due to migration to smaller TV packages under the YouSee brand and a one off boost in Q2 from a pay-per-view boxing event.
Revenue from TV increased by DKK 181 million (24.3 million) or 6.2%, continuing the growth from previous years.

    Clover’s Week: Reading the signals
    November 2, 2013 09.09 Europe/London By Julian Clover

The interpretation by the media of a particular story is sometimes almost as interesting as the story itself.
The €750 million sale of Liberty Global’s international content arm Chellomedia to the AMC Networks for example was taken by the Daily Telegraph as clearing the decks for a sale of the business to Vodafone. I fear that any cable executive who as much as sneezes over the next few months will be taken as a signal that a sale to the purchasers of Kabel Deutschland was only a formality.
AMC, which runs The Sundance Channel, joins Scripps in US players who were once strangers to the European market that now have a substantial presence.
Scripps also took advantage of cable’s desire to be in the pipe rather than on the stage. A year ago it purchased Virgin Media’s share in the UKTV channels, later buying the international version of Travel Channel, to add to the US version already in its portfolio.
That Virgin Media was then acquired by Liberty Global gives us both a desire to pull out of content and the ever-present trend of consolidation.
Sitting in the background, and acquired by AMC as part of the Chellomedia deal, are the CBS branded channels run as part of the Chello portfolio.
It is almost a curiosity that while the cable companies have gotten off the stage, satellite has more than a hand in the grease paint.
This month eight of the top ten shows across Sky’s entertainment channels were British shows commissioned by the broadcaster. Add to that the Sky Movies, Sky Sports and Sky News brands. Across the channel just look at Canal+.
    ****
The BT Sports channel was declared to be an “early success” by the Financial Times. The Freemium strategy – BT hasn’t revealed how many of the 4 million subs are willing payers as opposed to receiving the channel because of their choice of broadband supplier.
I’m no football fan, but my impression of the channel is that it is highly professional, but an as well as rather than a replacement to Sky Sports.
With all the excitement over BT Sport the fact that BT TV (the former BT Vision) is close to one million subs itself has hardly been noticed.
