Netflix negotiating US cable delivery deals
    Editor | 14-10-2013

Weeks after making the bold step of announcing availability on Virgin Media and Com Hem in the UK and Sweden respectively, Netflix is said to be set to seal deals with equivalent cable firms in the US.
According to reports in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the over-the-top (OTT) leader is negotiating carriage with a number of providers, calling out specifically Comcast and Suddenlink Communications to make its online video service available as an app on their set-top boxes.
Even though the WSJ cautioned that talks are in early stages and no deal is imminent, talk of such a move will inevitably fuel a growing sense that both Netflix and the online video market in general are entering a second phase in their respective evolutions. In the case of Netflix this is from being defined by the platform on which it is available to becoming a key content provider in its own right.
Being able to offer Netflix as a channel would be a considerable competitive advantage for the aforementioned cablecos who, like their peers and other pay-TV rivals, have struggled to come to terms with declining subscriptions and who believe that offering Netflix will spur increased take-up of high value, high speed broadband.
Despite the success with Virgin and Com Hem, Netflix, said the WSJ, has encountered a "hang-up" in the talks with at least two operators by insisting that the cable operators take not only its content but also specialised technology designed to improve the delivery of its streaming video. The technology is said to be part of the Netflix Open Connect programme, comprising special servers that the firm wants to connect directly into broadband providers' networks. Yet the WSJ says that Comcast — as well as Time Warner Cable, AT&T and Verizon Communications —have declined to use the technology, concerned that such an arrangement could lead other online services to ask for similar accommodation.

GLAAD: TV gets a little less diverse this autumn season
    Michelle Clancy | 14-10-2013

GLAAD's Where We Are on TV report, which analyses the diversity of primetime scripted series regulars on US broadcast networks and looks at the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) characters on cable networks, has found that out of 796 primetime broadcast scripted series regulars, 26 will be LGBT this year, or 3.3%.
This is down from 4.4% last year but still up from 2.9% at the beginning of the 2011-2012 season. In addition, GLAAD found 20 recurring LGBT characters, down from 25 last year.
ABC and FOX are the only networks to show increases this year, and have the highest percentage of LGBT characters, at 5.4% each. The CW is in third place at 3%. CBS is no longer last, with 1.9% of its regular characters being LGBT, while NBC dropped from last year to 1%.
Of the 46 LGBT regular and recurring characters on broadcast networks, half are women and 28% are people of colour. While last year there weren't any regular transgender characters on broadcast television, there will be one this season with the character of Unique on Glee.
On cable, GLAAD counted 42 regular LGBT characters, up from 35 last season. An additional 24 recurring characters were counted. HBO will have the most characters with a total of 11, followed by Showtime with eight characters. Of those LGBT characters, 39% are women and 29% are people of colour. Only one transgender character, Adam on Degrassi, was counted although he no longer appears on the programme.
Of the 796 overall regular characters on broadcast prime time, the percentage of female characters has declined somewhat to 43%. People of colour will once again make up 23% of all regular characters, while just 1% will be depicted as people with disabilities.

Dyle mobile TV gets a better receiver for smartphones
    Michelle Clancy | 14-10-2013

Dyle mobile TV, the mobile broadcast service that delivers local TV feeds over the air to smartphones, tablets and laptops, is getting a new receiver. Audiovox mobiletv has launched a wireless mobile TV receiver designed to bring free live TV to iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.
The Dyle mobile TV app, developed by Siano and available from the App Store and Google Play, will interface with the $130 Audiovox mobile TV receiver to enable the delivery of Dyle signals to devices without the need for a clunky external converter.
"Our partnership with Dyle expands the mobile television experience by expanding the availability of broadcast television to literally millions of Apple and Android users across the US," said Tom Malone, president of Audiovox. "Our Audiovox receiver provides both the convenience of wireless accessibility and the ability to work with a broad set of devices and screens to deliver the live, local TV experience consumers demand."
Dyle mobile TV, operated by Mobile Content Venture (MCV), a joint-venture of 12 major broadcast groups, is available in 38 markets, reaching 57 % of the US. It delivers live broadcast TV outside of the 3G/4G network, including local and national news, sports and entertainment programming to mobile devices.
"The addition of the Audiovox accessory marks a pivotal point for Dyle by offering an exceptionally revolutionary product for mobile television," said Erik Moreno, co-general manager of MCV. "We look forward to continuing to expand our network footprint and ability to deliver service to a wider consumer audience of iOS and Android users."

    Parent Category: News | 14-10-2013

Discovery Communications has debuted Animalist, an online video network celebrating the connection between humans and animals.
The latest offering from the home of Revision3, TestTube and SourceFed, Animalist launches with a slate of 15 short-form series that highlight the entirety of the animal kingdom – all available at Animalist.com, and across mobile, YouTube, Xbox and in conjunction with additional distribution partners.
"The launch of Animalist is another step forward in Discovery's journey to both ignite audiences' curiosity and fuel our mission to be the No 1 non-fiction video and media company on all screens," said Sean Atkins, senior vice president of digital networks and commerce at Discovery Communications. Debuting with seven million monthly streams, Animalist's mix of short-form original content is comprised of series exploring both the wild kingdom and, closer to home, the wild world of pets. The programming line-up includes several new shows, such as Discovery Sharks and Animals with Low Self Esteem, which leverage Discovery's library of nature and animal footage from more than 25 years of broadcasting.
"Cats riding donkeys defined the early days of animal videos on the Net, but today's viewers want much more, and we're bringing it to them with Animalist," said Jim Louderback, head of Discovery Digital Networks. "Whether you identify with an animal's instinctive nature – to hunt and fight for territory – or you identify with that innocent and trusting relationship between us and them, our addictive slate of shows will make you laugh, make you cry and make you smarter."

Charter trials cloud UI in Fort Worth
    Michelle Clancy | 14-10-2013

Charter Communications is testing a cloud-based user interface in Fort Worth, Texas, which will work on IP devices as well as legacy set-tops.
Charter CEO Tom Rutledge made the announcement at Liberty Media's annual Investor Day.
The cable MSO had previously announced that it had tapped ActiveVideo's CloudTV H5 platform to extend the user experience from the cloud to any connected device. The idea is to roll out TV services embedded with modern UIs that support guide, navigation and rich media applications across a range of device and network paradigms. Charter isn't alone in the idea: Cablevision is another ActiveVideo CloudTV customer.
"With billions of connected devices in the market, the need is growing exponentially for cloud-based solutions that can reduce device and experience fragmentation," said Jeff Miller, president and CEO of ActiveVideo. "Our continued commitment to improving the CloudTV platform will help our customers address multiple needs: delivering the best possible viewer experiences, accelerating time to market, and providing the operational scale to roll out TV everywhere-style services, all while minimising infrastructure costs."

    TVP assess HbbTV progress
    October 14, 2013 19.58 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul, PIKE 2013, Lodz

tvp-flagsTVP now has 160,000 HbbTV users a month, according to Wieslaw Lodzikowski, the public broadcaster’s director of technology.
Speaking in a panel discussion entitled Interactive Television: How to reach and engage audiences, he added that this figure compared to 1,500 when it launched its first hybrid apps 15 months ago, initially for Euro 2012.
According to Lodzikowski, TVP’s strategy is one of educating viewers and making them interactive.
However, to do so requires it to find out as much as possible about them and this was not always welcome, with some believing they were being checked to see if they had paid their receiver licence fees.
Lodzikowski also spoke highly of the HbbTV service being developed by TVP’s Spanish counterpart RTVE and the fact that some of its elements have been developed specifically for kids

    Major Russian cable deal doubt
    October 15, 2013 06.46 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

ER-TelecomThe acquisition of Moscow-based Akado by ER Telecom now looks unlikely to take place.
According to Vedomosti, talks between the two parties have ground to a halt, with the major stumbling block appearing to be the stance being the negative stance to the proposed deal being taken by the Moscow city authorities.
This will be a major blow to ER Telecom, which is the country’ second largest provider of broadband internet, as well as one of its leading cable operators, with around 2.6 million and 2.5 million subscribers respectively.
It has been keen to enter the lucrative Moscow market, where Akado is a key player.
In total, the latter had 1.1 million TV and over 800,000 broadband internet subscribers in Moscow, St Petersburg and Yekaterinberg as of H1 this year.
Akado has now been on the market for over three years and in that time attracted interest from a host of Russian companies including Svyzinvest and MTS.
