Canal+ to launch series premium channel
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12-10-2013

The Spanish pay-TV channel Canal+ is to launch a new premium channel dedicated to series, on which some productions will be premiered at the same time as they are in the US.
With this announcement, the platform aims to meet the demand of its customers and fans of series, while increasing its premium catalogue.
All of Canal+ series will be premiered on the new channel, which will air in December. The new channel aims to become a meeting point for series enthusiasts, and the entire schedule will be related to the genre. There will be special programmes, series without dubbing, making-ofs, news and marathons.
The channel, which will broadcast in HD, will be also available through Yomvi, Canal+'s online, on-demand and TV everywhere platform.
Canal+ has recently been increasing its offer in order to diversify its audience, focusing on Yomvi, which has seen an increase of customers. Despite this, the pay-TV service is losing subscribers, and Prisa still intends to sell it when a good enough offer comes along.

    NBC leaves Costa Rica's pay-TV
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12-10-2013

The US channel NBC has left Costa Rica's pay-TV platforms, the country's main operators have announced. According to Tigo, Cabletica, Telecable, Cablevision and Claro TV, the contract has been unilaterally broken, an option that was included in the contract.
According to NBC, the move is due to the misuse of the signal, which in some cases had been broadcast without the channel's authorisation.
The situation is apparently common in Costa Rica, although most of the international channels, including TVE, BCC and CNN, are still operating normally in the country. NBC's decision came into effect at the beginning of October, affecting all cable providers. The other two channels which carry the American signal – Telemundo and Universal – appear to have the necessary authorisation and so will keep broadcasting.
Andrea Amen, marketing manager at Cabletica, explained to La Nación newspaper that NBC backed its decision up with other agreements with international distributors. "The broadcasting rights of some of the productions at NBC in the US are owned by big audiovisual groups in Latin America," Amen explained.
Subscribers were surprised by the sudden announcement, as no further explanation was given by the cable operators. Some NBC shows will be still broadcast by Telemundo and Universal.

Kabel Deutschland opens private Wi-Fi hotspots
    Jörn Krieger | 13-10-2013

Germany's largest cable operator Kabel Deutschland will give its customers the possibility to co-use the Wi-Fi home networks of other customers free of charge when they are within reach.
For the so-called homespots a second Wi-Fi signal will be activated on the customers' cable routers separated from the private internet connection.
With activation of the shared surfing feature, customers will become part of the homespot community and can access the internet through the homespots of other customers without additional charge when they are on the move. Non-customers of Kabel Deutschland will not be granted access. The speed of the private internet connection will not be affected as the homespot will be allocated additional bandwidth. The legal risk in case the third-party Wi-Fi access is misused for illegal activities will be covered by Kabel Deutschland.
With the opening of the private Wi-Fi networks for other customers, Kabel Deutschland complements the public Wi-Fi hotspots it is currently installing at busy streets and squares in several towns as well as the Wi-Fi hotspots it operates in conjunction with partners such as cafés, municipal citizen offices and museums.

    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 13-10-2013

Ubiquity acquires Think Design for social TV, IPTV functions
    Michelle Clancy | 13-10-2013

Ubiquity Broadcasting has acquired assets of the Think Design Media, including The Social Mashup and IPTV, related intellectual property, customer relationships and inventory in a stock transaction as disclosed in its most recent 8-K SEC filing.
The Social Mashup is a series of application programming interfaces (APIs) that enable businesses to manage their social media presence.
"With this acquisition, we are creating an unparalleled offering which will enable our customers to maximise their return on their online presence and investments” said Chris Carmichael, CEO of Ubiquity. “Whether as a standalone suite of APIs being marketed to Web site operators, or integrated into our portfolio of Web 3.0 products, Social Mashup is a powerful addition to Ubiquity, while IPTV has the potential to dramatically change the way content providers will approach distribution."
The complete suite consists of SocialMedia Share, SocialMedia Stream, SocialMedia Votes, SocialMedia Analytics, SocialMedia Expressions and SocialMedia Login ID.
The complete Social Mashup suite is available for a discounted bundle price, or on an a la carte basis.
"Today, most websites are static and boring,” said Carlos Orellana, Ubiquity senior vice president of product development. “In other words, they are not interactive and do not promote a direct dialogue with their customers, fans, supporters or viewers. The Internet is about online communities participating and peering consumers who choose to communicate and socialise through modern technology.”
IPTV meanwhile provides Web video publishers and broadcasters with an alternative way to create and deploy video applications that make standard online videos into interactive, multi-dimensional, personalised user experiences. By adding advertising and other layered content to Web videos, the platform and technology creates new revenue streams for content providers, increasing their ROI and their user base. IPTV also allows the publisher to retain control of their content rather than giving it to a third party that takes a disproportionate amount of the revenue, and gains access to their proprietary viewer data.
IPTV's social media APIs make it easy for viewers to login and share video from the platform. It has an analytics dashboard that gives publishers access to detailed information about the viewing patterns of any video that they upload. IPTV also allows for elements tagged within the video to link to an eCommerce backend that makes programming shoppable.

CDN market to be worth $7.4BN by 2017
    Parent Category: News | 14-10-2013

As OTT is as hot as ever and online video in general soars with series bingeing, more research is pointing to content delivery networks (CDNs) as the lucrative equivalent of the shovel in the new TV Klondike.
According to a new market research report – Global Content Delivery Networks (CDN) Market (Delivery Technologies, Hardware, Analytics, Monitoring, Encoding, Transparent Caching, DRM, CMS, OVP) - Trends, Geographical Analysis & Worldwide Market Forecasts (2012 - 2017) – published by MarketsandMarkets, the total CDN market is expected to rocket by a CAGR of 24.6% until 2017, reaching a value of $7.4 billion. This compares with $2.1 billion in 2011. North America, which commanded almost two-thirds (64.3%) of the overall managed CDN in 2011 at $1.3 billion, is expected to maintain market leadership by 2017, generating $4.6 billion at a CAGR of 24.1%.
In its report explaining the significance and potential profitability of CDNs, the analyst noted the growth in online video content richness and the network complexities to manage efficient content delivery to user.
It is in countering these Internet limitations and content delivery drawbacks that CDNs have evolved and the analyst asserts that they have emerged as one of the most lucrative markets for both existing players and new market players. MarketsandMarkets adds that online content is growing at a rapid rate from content provider businesses as well as from individuals, and as the Internet traffic load increases, it becomes difficult to manage this growth and provide quality of service to the end-user. Furthermore, MarketsandMarkets believes that competition within the CDN sector has accelerated due to the increasing demand for quality of services and new players' network optimisation solutions.
Concluding, and looking at a call to action for concerned parties, the analyst cautioned that despite demand, content providers had to differentiate clearly their products among other CDN providers for achieving better adoption among users.

Sky Sports, L'Équipe 21, Eurosport battle for sports category at Eutelsat TV Awards
    Editor | 14-10-2013

As its TV Awards ceremony draws nearer, Eutelsat has revealed that the sports category will be a three-way bout between L'Équipe, Eurosport and Sky Sport Formula 1.
The leading satellite operator says that compelling sport is the backbone of TV entertainment and that sports channels, more than any other thematic category, have taken advantage of new technologies. In addition to offering viewers multiple camera angles, replay and increasingly high definition, the players, Eutelsat notes, have also taken the notion of thematic to new levels, with channels dedicated to a single discipline such as Formula One, golf, football or tennis.
Launched on 12 December 2012, L'Équipe 21 is an all-HD free-to-air channel broadcasting to homes across France via the Fransat satellite platform and through the DTT network promoting more than 100 sports disciplines. The Amaury Group-owned channel addresses its markets and the challenges faced by the sports industry through debates, news and live coverage.
Eurosport by contrast has been a long-established part of the continent's sports line-up, broadcasting in 20 languages to 131 million homes across Europe Eurosport. The last 12 months has seen Eurosport defy cyclical trends to generate huge audiences for tennis, cycling, winter sports and motorsports, attracting an increased number of viewers. Its coverage of the opening stages of the 100th Tour de France alone attracted over 17 million viewers in Europe, a 50% rise in audience compared with 2012.
Adding to its parent's roster of top-level offerings in the UK and Germany in particular, Sky Sport Formula 1 HD is the first network in Italy dedicated to Formula 1, with three distinct channels: the race channel covering Grand Prix events and including interviews, commentary and predictions; live broadcast of the Grand Prix; and Race Control which is activated via the red button on the remote.
The winner will be announced on 15 November 2014 at the Eutelsat TV Awards ceremony in Venice.
