Portuguese operator Zon Multimedia has chosen Appear TV scrambling and multiplexing for satellite infrastructure upgrade.
The installation, which is scheduled to go live in late 2013, is being managed by Satcab, the Appear TV Portuguese business partner.
“The flexibility and high-density of the Appear TV scrambling solution made it an ideal choice as the scrambling solution for our upgraded satellite broadcast infrastructure,” says José Pascoal, planning and engineer director, Zon.
“We already use Appear TV head-ends for our RF network, so we understand the advantages of the company’s modular design philosophy. We look forward to Appear TV’s scrambling and multiplexing solutions playing an important part in our state-of-the-art infrastructure upgrade.”
The project is fully redundant (1+1) and has been fulfilled through populating Appear TV chassis’ with Appear TV designed and manufactured high-density scrambling and multiplexing modules. The chassis’ are situated at the ZON main head-end. Four statistical multiplexers input to the scrambling modules that encrypt the Zon satellite TV offering secured with Nagra Aladin Conditional Access after which the multiplexers process PSI/SI and re-multiplex the Transport Stream.

“I’m delighted that we are able to extend our relationship with Zon and look forward to the Appear TV solutions going live for this mission critical task delivered by our highly professional, long-term business partner Satcab.”

    BBC iPlayer requests up +19%
    October 1, 2013 07.51 Europe/London By Robert Briel

BBC iPlayerMobile and tablet requests in August made up 32% of total BBC iPlayer requests, equalling the record set in June this year, according to the broadcaster.
The BBC said that during August there were 234m BBC iPlayer requests, up +19% on this time last year. August saw an average 7m daily requests with weekly requests remaining steady at around 49m requests.
On TV there was a strong start for the launch of Bad Education, the first of BBC Three’s scripted comedies to premiere on BBC iPlayer, generating over 1.5m requests before it aired on BBC Three (1,055,000 in August).
New BBC One comedy Big School also performed well generating 1.1m requests. Top Gear continued to be extremely popular with episodes 5/6 generating over 3m requests. Other top performing programmes included the return of The Great British Bake Off and Dragons’ Den.
On radio, live sport dominated in August with The Ashes and the return of 5 Live Sport Premier League. The Ashes Test Match Specials generated a cumulative 5m requests making up 14 out of the top 20 radio requests
The profile of BBC iPlayer users has evened out over time in terms of male/female ratio, but remains strongly under-55 in terms of age, which is younger than the typical TV viewer or radio listener’s profile (although more in line with home broadband users).
BBC iPlayer is used for TV at roughly the same time of day as linear TV viewing, although there is proportionally more daytime and late-peak use. For radio, BBC iPlayer is used far more.

Ericsson-Red Bee takeover referred to Competition Commission
    October 1, 2013 08.47 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Red Bee MediaThe proposed acquisition of Red Bee Media by Ericsson is to be referred to the Competition Commission.
A preliminary investigation by the Office of Fair Trading found the takeover could lead to an increase in prices for linear playout services.
Clive Maxwell, OFT Chief Executive and Decision Maker in this case said: “Not only is there the possibility of price rises as a result of the merger, there is a risk the most complex channels will suffer a reduction in quality in their service levels.”
Both parties offered behavioural remedies, but these were deemed as insufficient to meet the OFT’s concerns.
The former BBC Broadcast division has 1,500 staff in the UK and Australia. It was spun off from the BBC in 2005 and bought by a Macquarie-backed venture, specially established for the acquisition.
Red Bee maintains contracts with the BBC, as well as providing services for companies including Canal+, Chellomedia and Channel 4, amongst others. There are also facilities in France, Germany and Spain.

Magyar Telekom HQMagyar Telekom aims to increase the ratio of homes that subscribe to at least two telecom services from its 2012 level of 57% to 74% by 2017.
Furthermore, amongst those, it plans to raise the so-called 5play ratio, namely fixed and mobile voice and internet coupled with a TV package, from 6% to 32% over the same time period.
In the residential sector as a whole, the company expects to reach an average of 3.1 services per household in 2017, compared to the current 2.4.
The projections were given by the company’s management at an investor day held in Budapest on September 30 in which it outlined a number of strategic and financial targets for 2017.
They envisage a complete financial performance turnaround, with EBITDA in 2017 surpassing that for this year thanks to higher revenues and a reduction in indirect costs.
Capital expenditures (CAPEX) is meanwhile projected to fall from HUF87 billion (€291.6 million) in 2014 to HUF80 billion in 2017.
