UltraHD panel-makers redefine specs to improve 4KTV uptake
    Editor | 17-09-2013

Having seen very high specs of TVs choke uptake through prohibitive pricing, UltraHD display-makers are resetting their specifications to boost market appeal.
According to new survey data from WitsView, the UltraHD TVs launched by top-tier brands have tended to feature high value-added functions such as 3DTV capability and smart Internet connection. However, despite their appeal in terms of functionality, such capability is making the sets unaffordable. In addition the analyst believes that the roll out of UltraHDs has been hampered by the lack of an accepted broadcasting and transmission standard that meets the defined UltraHD TV spec and a paucity of native UltraHD programme content.
Given all of these commercial development parameters, WitsView projects a penetration rate of only 0.8% for UltraHD TV by the end of 2013.
Yet looking forward to 2014, the analyst is more optimistic, forecasting a penetration rate up to 2% as panel-makers emphasise on the spec at the beginning of development, including 120 Hz and 3D with mostly sizes of 50" and above. Whereas to date mass-produced sizes are 55" and 65" to underline the UltraHD TV's high-end position, leading to costs higher than the FHD panel by 1.5-1.6 times, WitsView sees some manufacturer adopt UltraHD TV strategies not only adopting the sizes under 50" — including the living-room friendly 39", 42" — but also lowering the product spec to enter the market with advantages of low costs.
WitsView takes the fundamental view that as the set selling price comes to the sweet point for consumers, market scale is likely to further expand. It added that the key to producing low-cost UltraHD TV was to cut the frame rate and reduce the use of key components while panel transparency must be lifted to drive down the BLU module cost and boost the panel production yield.

Social TV in Peru increases with Twitter penetration
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 17-09-2013

Media analysts in Peru are reporting a clear increase in social TV activities in the country, with this tendency growing along with Twitter penetration, which has reached 1.5 million users in 2013.
According to a report by ConcorTV – Peru's TV council – the capital's inhabitants watch TV for three hours and 15 minutes daily and spend two hours 45 minutes on the Internet. However, over 54% of media users still don't expend a single minute looking at Web content.
"Twitter's immediacy and the mobile platforms make it possible to use the Internet while watching TV," said Fernando García, online communication director at analyst firm Llorent & Cuenca. "Viewers are using Twitter to comment on the news, a tendency that has been observed in many countries, but is new in Peru." García added that the social behaviour hasn't been noticed on Facebook because, according to him, "it's a social network for family use".
While in many American countries over 50% of viewers actively use the social networks while watching TV, in Peru a big portion of the 1.5 million Twitter users are doing it in a more passive way. According to Llorent & Cuenca's forecast, the microblogging platform still has space to grow in Peru and will change the way of watching TV.

    Claro brings over-the-top to Chile
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 17-09-2013

Claro is to bring its over-the-top service to Chile, as it has done in many other Latin American countries including Brazil, Mexico or Colombia. The platform, Clarovideo, aims to compete with other OTT services, mainly Netflix.
Claro, which was also the first operator to launch an LTE service in Chile, intends to offer Clarovideo everywhere and on every screen. The platform will have over 3,000 pieces of HD audiovisual content, including movies, series, kids' programming and even karaoke. The offer will be available through subscription but with much of the content including premieres being also available on-demand.
According to Vady Guerra, product and strategy manager at Claro, the platform will also be available to pre-paid and subscription mobile clients. They will be able to use the 4G network – currently only operating in Santiago, Concepción and Punta Arenas – to access the service.

    Sony launches smart Android dongle
    September 18, 2013 Europe/London By Robert Briel

sony smart stickSony is launching a new accessory for its 2013 Bravia television line, the Bravia Smart Stick.
The dongle will turn any Bravia TV set into a smart TV set and make existing smart sets “even smarter”. The stick features Google Chrome search for results from cable and satellite DTH providers, the internet, and thousands of apps. “It’s so smart it integrates into a user’s existing cable or satellite service so there is no need to clumsily switch inputs to enjoy content from either source,” according to a Sony blog.
The smart stick will cost $130 (EUR97) and includes a universal remote, where users can either type or speak into.
The new dongle can connect to a Sony TV set not only through an MHL or HDMI plug, but also via infrared. Owners will also be able to pass through their cable or satellite box connection. Connected this way, users gain picture-in-picture functionality, allowing them to browse the web in full screen while a video plays in a smaller window in the right-hand corner of the TV.
Out of the box, the Smart Stick is pre-installed with apps like Netflix, HuluPlus, Pandora, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, Vudu, Redbox Instant by Verizon, AOL On, and two Sony-owned internet services: Crackle and Video Unlimited on the Sony Entertainment Network, and more. Viewers can personalise their TV experience by adding video, music, games, social networking and news apps from the Google Play Store.
The Bravia Smart Stick’s user interface integrates Google TV and Sony’s own Bravia apps, allowing viewers to stay in a single menu to launch any of their apps, including Bravia apps like the Internet Video Library.
Additionally, the Bravia Smart Stick’s Picture-and-Picture feature allows viewers to surf the web and watch TV at the same time in two independent windows on the television screen, without interfering with one another.
The stiuck is initially only avaiable in the US, where it will compete against the Google Chrome stick, which costs just $35.

ARD and ZDF plan to go DVB-T2 in 2017
    September 19, 2013

ARD+ZDFGerman pubcasters ARD and ZDF plan to switch to DVB-T2 in 2017 with simulcasts ending in 2020.
The German broadcasters currently use DVB-T to broadcast their two main national channels as well as all regional ARD channels. The channels are available free-to-air.
“It is important for us that everyone can watch our programmes everywhere with the most simple and inexpensive reception equipment. For us terrestrial distribution is still the best way and will continue to be so,” according to ARD chairman and NDR director Lutz Marmor.
ZDF director Dr. Thomas Bellut added: “We are fully behind digital terrestrial. This way of distribution is a consumer friendly and free to use alternative for viewers, also available on mobile and portable devices. On DTT viewers can watch ZDF programming independent of third-party interests.”
The two public broadcasters also stressed that the frequency spectrum at 700 MHz should be preserved for broadcasting at least till 2020.

    Hollinger to leave Discovery
    September 19, 2013

Mark HollingerMark Hollinger has resigned from the position of president and CEO of Discovery Networks International (DNI), effective June 2014.
Commenting on his decision, he said: “I informed David Zaslav last week of my intention to step down when my contract is up next June. Having spent 150 or so days away from home during each of the last several years, most often many time zones away, I am looking forward to being back in the US full-time and spending more time with my family. It really is the only reason I would leave such a terrific company and such a wonderful team of people. Working at Discovery has been one of the great joys of my life, and I couldn’t be prouder of all that the company has accomplished in my time here.”
Discovery Communications president and CEO David Zaslav said, “Mark is a consummate professional and amazing leader who has made a huge impact on all of us at Discovery Communications over the 23 years he has been at the company, and I am so grateful for his contributions, leadership and unwavering integrity. It is no surprise that the sense of family and being home for his wife and children has brought Mark to the realisation that now is a good time to come back to the US full-time to be with them. While this is a great loss to the company, I could not be happier for him or more supportive of his decision.”
Hollinger joined Discovery Communications in 1991 as VP & deputy general counsel, and subsequently served in numerous leadership roles across the company, including COO; president global businesses & operations; and senior executive VP & general counsel.
In his role as president and CEO of DNI he was responsible for the strategic development and daily operations for a division that distributes 42 entertainment brands, in 45 languages, to more than 1.6 billion cumulative subscribers in 224 countries and territories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America.
According to Discovery, its board of directors and executive team will begin a search for Hollinger’s successor immediately.
