Thuuz kicks off Android tablet sports app
    Michelle Clancy | 10-09-2013

Just in time for the opening of the NFL season, Thuuz Sports has launched an Android app for sports coverage and content discovery, designed to support the growing number of Thuuz fans who use tablets, including a revamped game guide and Fantasy Football integration.
"Given our mission to drive incremental viewers to live sports programming, creating a tablet version of our app made perfect sense," noted Michael Schmier, vice president of product management for Thuuz. "More than 60% of our fans are now using tablet apps, not only as second-screen companions during live events but to also help them decide which event to watch in the first place."
Thuuz is characterising its discovery platform as being driven by escalating costs to carry sports programming.
"The recent resolution of the dispute between CBS and Time Warner Cable reinforces the power of live sports content to drive TV ratings and attract a mass audience," said Warren Packard, CEO of Thuuz. "The Thuuz discovery platform adds value for both sports fans and TV providers, by connecting viewers with the most relevant and compelling sports content, and helping TV providers attain incremental viewership. We want to give our users a heightened ability to see what's happening in the world of sports and consume the content of their choice. Our new tablet app is one more step in that direction."
Thuuz recently conducted a survey of its app users which found that over 70% had watched a televised sporting event in the past month that they would have otherwise missed were it not for Thuuz Sports' platform. Thuuz Sports' research also shows that on average, Thuuz users watched 28% more sporting events, due to the platform's ability to notify users of relevant live sports broadcasts.
The new Android game guide shows live, upcoming and recently completed games in a single view. It also acts as a 'heat map' to keep track of trending games while watching TV.

Al Jazeera wins UEFA Champions League rights for MENA
    Rebecca Hawkes | 10-09-2013

Qatar-based pay-TV broadcaster Al Jazeera Sport has secured the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) rights for the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League from 2015-2018.
"All UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League matches will be shown live, confirming Al Jazeera's continued commitment to the tournaments both in terms of production and also in terms of programming," said a statement on the UEFA website.
Al Jazeera – already the regional home of live English Premier League until summer 2016 – will also screen extensive highlights and delayed programming of the European club competitions, with services provided in Arabic, English and French, the football association said.
Al Jazeera Sport already broadcasts the two UEFA club competitions to 23 countries across its 19 channels, which also host top-flight Spanish and Italian league football, FA Cup football, and Brazil and England international matches.
The broadcaster plans to launch three new high definition channels to accommodate the extra football content it has acquired this summer.
In addition to the new deals with UEFA and the English Premier League, club content for English teams Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, and Italian teams AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus are also reported to be among Al Jazeera Sport's recent acquisitions.

    Discovery takes TLC to Germany
    Jörn Krieger | `10-09-2013

US media company Discovery Networks will launch the women's channel TLC in Germany in April 2014. The channel will be available as an advertising-financed free-to-air service via cable, satellite and IPTV.
The channel, which launched in the 1980s as The Learning Channel, now reaches a total of around 300 million households in 167 countries outside the US. "TLC stands for exceptional people, exceptional moments and innovative non-fictional entertainment," Susanne Aigner-Drews, managing director of Discovery Networks Deutschland, told German industry magazine w&v.
TLC will solely show real-life formats targeting women between 20 and 49. The programmes will mainly be contributed by its US parent company and will be screened as German TV premieres, for example series like Here comes Honey Boo Boo, Cake Boss, Ultimate Shopper, Say Yes to the Dress and Breaking Amish.
Original German productions are also planned. "The Americans make fantastic entertainment, but we need German content colours as well. They will be clearly visible," said Aigner-Drews.
TLC, which will also be available in Austria and Switzerland, will be Discovery Network's second free-to-air channel in the German-speaking market after men's channel DMAX. Discovery Networks Deutschland also operates pay-TV channels Discovery Channel and Animal Plant in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

News, films take centre stage in UAE viewers’ league
    Rebecca Hawkes 10-09-2013

News and films are the most watched genres on television in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), while Facebook is the most liked social media platform, according to new research.
“The survey revealed that news and movies are the most popular types of TV programmes watched in the UAE,” said Mohammed Al-Shawwa, research manager, Arab Advisors Group.
“On the pay-TV front, the survey also revealed that over 40% of respondents who have a pay-TV subscription are subscribed to cable TV,” he added.
The UAE population has a range of pay-TV options available, including satellite-based television services from OSN and My-HD, and IPTV propositions from telecommunications operators Etisalat and Du.
Analysts also discovered high levels of social media adoption in the UAE through the media consumption survey results. Of those 750 respondents aged 18 and above who used the Internet, 80.8% have a Facebook account, according to the Jordan-based Arab Advisors Group.

Canal+'s Yomvi designs new web player
    Parent Category: News | 10-09-2013

Yomvi, Canal'+s video-on-demand (VOD) online premium service, is to launch a new Web player to gradually replace its PC application. The website is currently in beta version and some customers are already testing it.
The site is similar to the app for computers, but Yomvi is played directly through the browser. The app for computers has been giving some problems lately and it's easy for users to access the service online. The new Yomvi site is based on Microsoft Silverlight and runs on HTML5.
Canal+ decided to take the same road as other VOD and over-the-top (OTT) platforms in Spain. From launch, Total Channel – which has been online since April – and Magine – which is still running its beta service – have been available on the Internet without any app being required when accessing them from a computer.
The web player solution has also been available in Yomvi from launch, but it has always been eclipsed by the PC app.
Canal+ is relaunching Yomvi as it is the only service which seems to have been successful for the pay-TV platform this year. The company has also reinforced the service to support the increasing demand for content since the Spanish football season kicked off.

New Perception claiming to redefine mobile TV for 4G operators
    Editor | 10-09-2013

Vision247 is to use IBC as a platform to present Perception, a new platform which it says will redefine the delivery of TV over mobile networks, in particular 4G.
The media technology and content distribution specialist says that Perception from will enable 4G-connected mobile devices to access hundreds of live streamed, high quality linear TV and radio channels, cloud-based catch-up TV and video-on-demand (VOD).
Users are able to select and watch programmes live or on a catch-up basis, as Perception supports time-shifted viewing of all programming from the previous week or more. The product also provides users with a cloud-based video recorder allowing them to create a personal TV channel. Vision247 assures that should network capacity issues lead to 4G users being moved to 3G, Perception will kick in automatic adaptive transcoding technology for iOS and Android devices to ensure content is optimised for smooth unbroken viewing.
Ultimately, Vision247 believes that Perception will enable operators to differentiate their 4G services, as well as drive new and additional revenues through the implementation of OTT pay-per-view content, and targeted advertising. With built in regionalisation, white labelling and custom app development, the platform can also be extended as an offering to MVNO partners.
“For mobile operators wanting to distinguish their 4G services, the Perception platform represents a highly scalable, rapidly deployable and secure solution that delivers high quality streamed TV, catch-up and video-on-demand to 4G devices,” commented John Mills, Vision247 CEO.

Low competition drives Uruguay to highest pay-TV rates in Latin America
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 10-09-2013

Uruguay has the highest pay-TV prices in Latin America, mostly due to low competition in the industry, according to the latest analysis by Signals Telecom.
With an average rate of $37.34 for a regular TV package, Uruguay tops the ranking over Argentina, Chile and Paraguay.
The Uruguayan pay-TV market is shared by four big operators – Cablevisión, Nuevo Siglo, TCC and DirecTV – which broadcast to 50% of the audience. The other 50% is covered by many local and regional operators, which don't compete between each other and keep prices for their services high.
The four big operators have price plans between $37-$40 for their basic services and $48-$51 for their extended offers. DirecTV has a premium version with more signals and exclusive content, which can raise its prices to over $90.
Signals Telecom sees the market's low concentration rate as being behind the high prices. Despite the wide variety of operators' in Uruguay, they rarely compete between themselves, particularly not in the market for lower-budget audiences.
The new media law will also impede mobile and Internet operators' ability to launch cable or satellite (DTH) platforms due to the Government's intention to protect local businesses from big multinationals such as DirecTV or Movistar, which recently tried to launch a DTH service.
