VuTV to offer mini-pay channels over DTT
    August 31, 2013 10.40 Europe/London By Julian Clover

vutv-channels-listIBC 2013: Stand 1.B22. Channels from A+E Networks, Viacom International Media Networks and Turner Broadcasting will be available in DTT homes this autumn following the launch of the latest service to take advantage of the MHEG-Interaction Channel (MHEG-IC).
VuTV, powered by Synapse TV, a joint venture between Simplestream and Strategy & Technology, has taken Freeview channel 238.
Subscribers will be able to use internet connected Freeview HD receivers to view channels including Comedy Central, BIO, MTV, CNN, History, H2, Crime & Investigation Network, Nickelodeon, Nicktoons, Nick Jr., Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito.
Dan Finch, Director of Simplestream, commented “We work with a wide range of broadcasters to stream their linear and on-demand TV to multiple devices. The content owners we engaged with embraced the idea of targeting the Freeview HD market with their portfolio of channels. As the public get wiser to connecting up their TVs, and the TV’s get smarter, it’s a great opportunity for channel providers to tap into the Freeview market and gain access to real time viewing data of their channels that can be used to help shape their own marketing strategy”.
Synapse is working with leading manufacturers to ensure maximum receiver compatibility and deliver the quality of user experience demanded by consumers. David Cutts, Managing Director of S&T, says, “The underlying technology is complex, with specialist knowledge and experience required to deliver an integrated, end-to-end, solution. However, we have worked to provide a viewing experience for VuTV that is simple, already familiar to consumers, and just works.” Content will be streamed to subscribers via Synapse TV’s secure Content Delivery Network (CDN), built using Amazon Web Services, which will ensure that VuTV can adapt to any scale that the market demands.
A similar operation is run by Arqiva’s Connect TV.
The interactive application sits behind an MHEG-5 ‘barker channel’. If the viewer has a connected device they are presented with a menu enabling them to pull in selected content over the internet.

Looking to the Future at IBC 2013
    August 31, 2013 10.15 Europe/London By Robert Briel

One of the main benefits of attending IBC, and one of the main reasons that 50,000 + people from 160 countries do so every year, is to understand what the future holds for the industry.
In the exhibition, 1,400 and more key suppliers showcase their latest wares that will power the world’s electronic entertainment and media industry forward over the coming year; and in the conference you will find debates and discussions over the direction the industry will take in the forthcoming decade.
But for a really deep look into the world of tomorrow, the IBC Future Zone, which is situated next to Hall 8, is hard to beat. This is where the concepts and prototypes from the world’s R&D Labs often get their first public airing and is a part of the show which regular IBC attendees always swing by to check out what is happening.
The 2013 exhibitors are led, as ever, by NHK, whose annual showing of the latest advances in its 8K Super Hi-Vision technology has become something of an IBC institution. This year visitors to its stand can see the world’s first realtime 8K encoder running under the new HEVC codec, as well as a new single-chip compact camera that sees the units becoming steadily smaller and thus more flexible and portable.
Elsewhere, BBC R&D will reveal the latest advances of its various research teams; HBB-NEXT will showcase its augmentations to the European HbbTV standard, including implementing facial recognition technology so that a TV set makes personal recommendations according to whoever is sitting in front of it; Korea’s ETRI will demo a satellite UHDTV broadcasting service via Ka-band, which adopts rain fade mitigation schemes to provide channel-adaptive service availability; and ViSTA TV will demonstrate prototype applications enabled by realtime information obtained from live streams of IPTV audience data.
It’s a fascinating collection of technologies, and there’s far more than there is space to mention here. A visit to the Future Zone is much recommended.
One of the perennial obsessions in the Future Zone has been in creating a more engaging entertainment experience for the viewer, which is also one of the main themes underpinning this year’s conference. It is also, of course, one of the main themes preoccupying the entire industry: how do you keep hold of viewer eyeballs in the face of so much competition for their attention from so many different screens?
One of the ways, of course, is to co-opt that second screen yourself, and there are several sessions looking at all things to do with the companion screen in an impressive range on contexts, from their use in a live environment in sports stadia through leveraging the power of social media and on to the always thorny topic of monetisation.
One of the most intriguing ones, though, is ‘Waiting for the ‘‘Sergeant Pepper’’ Moment’ on Saturday 14 September at 13.30 which promises to be a provocative look at creativity in the digital age and features such luminaries as Godfrey Reggio, Director of ‘Koyaanisqatsi’ and ‘Naqoyqatsi’. As the session description puts it: “Forty-six years on [from ‘Sergeant Pepper’] we have creative technologies that make the Beatles’ Abbey Road equipment look like stone axes and wooden spears. Still, the way we create and tell stories has remained virtually unchanged for a century.”
The chances of it staying the same for another century, however, are slim. And IBC2013 will provide the best seats in the house for seeing exactly what that future will hold.

BBC Daytime commissions new series, Paul Hollywood’s Pies And Puds
    Louise Duffy |1-09-2013

BBC Daytime has commissioned a new 20-part cookery series with celebrity baker and Great British Bake-Off star Paul Hollywood, called Paul Hollywood’s Pies And Puds.
Each of the 45-minute shows will see Hollywood cook three recipes: a signature pie and a signature pudding plus a dish inspired by a guest expert.
Hollywood said: “This programme is about our affection for straightforward, honest food. Pies and puddings really sum up the strengths of our culinary culture - there’s something about a home-baked pie or simple steamed pud that warms the cockles of your heart like nothing else. It’s good food simply made and above all delicious."
Damien Kavanagh, head of BBC Daytime, said: “Paul is much loved by BBC audiences and his new series will be a real treat for Daytime viewers, providing them not only with a baking masterclass but also the fascinating stories behind some unique recipes. Sweet or savoury, the series will feature something for everyone.”
Nick Bullen, director of programmes at Spun Gold, said: “Paul’s new show will pay tribute to the nation’s favourite comfort foods. We hope viewers will take inspiration from Paul’s travels and recipes to recreate some of these tempting puddings and pies in their own homes.”
Paul Hollywood’s Pies And Puds (20x45-minutes) was commissioned for BBC Daytime by Gerard Melling. It is being produced by Spun Gold. The executive producer is Chris Kelly. The series producer is Dunk Barnes. The series will air on BBC One later this year.

Operators need enhanced billing systems to cash in on digital content viewership
    Editor | 1-09-2013

With smartphone sales surpassing feature phone sales for the first time, new monetisation channels are emerging for media firms, but these will only be realised with adequate billing systems according to a research note by MPP Global Solutions.
The provider of customer relationship management, payment and eCommerce solutions to the media and entertainment sectors noted that video broadcasters are now moving much of their budgets to the digital platform in order to offer a wider range of content for people to consume however and whenever they want. It sees particular focus on the on-demand sector.
However, MPP warns that despite this user demand, it is important that operators have an eCommerce model in place that can take online payments should it be a paid service. A suitable service would be one that integrates multiple payment types such as credit and debit card, direct debit and mobile billing, payment methods such as pre and post-pay micropayments, subscriptions and real time, and payment channels including Web, mobile and connected TV.
WPP advises that a long-term structure is necessary in order to deliver the best possible platform for users. For example, the system must be integrated across PCs, tablets and smartphones, allowing people to seamlessly log into a device of their choosing.

Colombia brings FTTH to 770 cities
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 1-09-2013

Colombia has brought fibre connection to 770 cities over the past three years, which outdoes the initial Government provisions.
The progress of Plan Vive Digital, which aims to bring ICT technologies to the whole country, was analysed at Andicom 2013, the international congress held in Cartagena, by the country's ICT Minister, Diego Molano.
During the past three years Colombia has increased its Internet point access from 2.2 million to 7.2 million, although the penetration percentage is still low (34% of houses are connected and 20% of SMEs). Molano praised the fast growth experienced lately, which is placing the country in a real digital environment.
According to the minister, Colombia has also become the best internationally connected country in Latin America, due to five submarine cables – with four more under construction. The country has also launched its 4G network, in which six telcos are operating.
One of the difficulties of bringing the whole Latin American region to the digital era is the remoteness of some of the areas. In Colombia, the Government has focused on this by initiating the Kioskos Vive Digital project, through which at least one Internet point will be installed in towns with over 100 inhabitants (of which there are 5,344 in the whole country). It has already installed 1,100 Internet points in these remote areas.
