Vision247 debuts Perception, a hybrid TV platform
    Rebecca Hawkes | 15-08-2013

Media technology and content distribution specialist Vision247 has launched Perception for operators looking to reduce churn and raise ARPU through market hybrid IPTV and over-the-top (OTT) Internet-delivered content.
Perception is a pre-packaged, scalable, end-to-end content acquisition, management and distribution platform which supplies network operators with IPTV middleware, content management, billing and monetisation for delivery of premium linear broadcast and video-on-demand (VOD). Full integration with smart TVs, set-top boxes (STBs) and transcoding for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets ensures content is automatically optimised for viewing quality.
The platform's Multimedia Gateway Cloud supports personalised services that keep subscribers 'sticky,' like an electronic programme guide (EPG) for IPTV and IP radio streams which integrates start-over/catch-up time-shift functionality and comprehensive network personal video recorder (nPVR) capabilities. Subscribers can watch, pause, jump back or restart any programme on the EPG. They can also begin watching on one screen, pause or stop, and pick up the programme again on another screen, even devices that do not normally support recording. IPTV subscribers have the freedom to find, keep or watch any programme, even those they have missed, instantly on any device, anywhere.
"The emergence of larger screen phablets and the popularity of tablet devices finally makes IP and OTT TV services a prime differentiator for operators seeking to offer multi-play packages that include home and mobile connectivity," said John Mills, CEO at Vision247. "Perception makes full use of high speed broadband, Wi-Fi, 3G and LTE network connections, providing hundreds of channels of 2D standard definition programmes, high definition (HD) content up to 1080p, 4K UHD video formats and 3D channels.
The provision of OTT pay-per-view content – from single shows to series links and the latest movies – is not limited to multi-play subscribers, providing operators with an additional revenue stream and route to new subscriber acquisition. Regionalisation and white-labelling of the platform and apps for smartphones, tablets, STBs and smart TVs enables Perception services to also be provisioned to MVNO partners as an additional revenue stream.
"Rather than becoming trapped in a price discounting scenario, operators that wish to maximise success from the delivery of television services must differentiate their broadcast offering. Only with innovative, high quality, personalised services which deliver the widest choice in terms of content and consumption can network operators hope to drive uptake and generate new ongoing revenues," said Mills. "The service provider can fully define and categorise the IPTV and OTT streams within Perception through a range of commercial packages including free-to-view, subscription time-based services and pay-per-view services."

    ScheduALL upgrades media transmission platform
    Michelle Clancy | 15-08-2013

ScheduALL has released ScheduALL 5 (S5), scheduling software for media and transmission businesses, which automates previously labour-intensive functions, like slack capacity optimisation, media system integration and third-party connectivity.
S5 also supports deadline-based scheduling, which schedules all the necessary resources so the job is done before deadline. This assurance allows the operator to better plan for future capacity.
"Our new smart technology bridges the gap between human-based and automated processes, and its smart workflow capability will connect, trigger and manage the entire workflow process for our clients," said Rick Legow, president at ScheduALL.
S5 also features cross-platform Web browser support on both Windows and Mac, where users are able to configure their function-centric workspace to keep their favourite content in front of them. Also new with S5 is universal user functionality, where all profiles and components of ScheduALL are managed in the core application of the system – centralising log-in and profile settings.
"We developed S5 because we excel at simplifying the complex for the media industry. Our S5 Beta Programme involved some of the top broadcasters across the globe. Our roots lie in media and we are continually listening to the needs of our clients," said Legow.

Sky News mourns cameraman killed in Egypt
    Rebecca Hawkes | 15-08-2013

A Sky News cameraman has been shot dead while covering the violence in Cairo, the UK broadcaster has announced. Mick Deane, 61, had worked for Sky News for 15 years, and was working in Egypt alongside Middle East correspondent Sam Kiley.
John Ryley, head of Sky News paid tribute to the cameraman, saying: "He was a talented and experienced journalist who had worked with Sky News for many years. The loss of a much-loved colleague will be deeply felt across Sky News."
Tim Marshall, Sky's foreign affairs editor, described Deane as "a friend, brave as a lion but what a heart ... what a human being ... Our hearts go out to his family. He died doing what he'd been doing so brilliantly for decades."
A Gulf-based reporter, Habiba Ahmed Abd Elaziz, was also killed in the violent clashes on 14 August while on annual leave in her home country.
Her family say the 26-year-old, who worked for a sister publication of the UAE's Gulf News, was at Rabaa Al Adawiya Square as troops stormed the camps of former President Mursi supporters.
"It's hard to believe she's gone. She was passionate about her work and had a promising career ahead," said Mazhar Farooqui, deputy editor, Xpress.
Around 235 people were killed in the disturbances on 14 August, with almost 2,001 injured, according to Egypt's official news agency, although the opposition Muslim Brotherhood puts the figures much higher.
The Egyptian Government has now imposed a month long state of emergency.
Last year, the International Federation of Journalists said 121 journalists and media workers were killed in violent incidents around the world.

Dutch cable broadband reaches 3 million
    August 16, 2013 08.56 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The number of cable broadband connections in the Netherlands has grown by 0.7% during the second quarter of this year to 3.01 million on 30 June, according to Telecompaper’s quarterly report on the Dutch consumer broadband market.
The total broadband market increased by 0.5% or 36,100 net additions during Q2 to reach 6.69 million lines including 3.11 million using DSL networks, which decreased by 1% during the quarter. FTTH/B connections grew by almost 9% in the same period ending the second quarter of an 8.4% market share.
Telecompaper estimates that the growth for the whole year will amount to 2.4% with continued cable and fibre broadband growth off-setting the decrease in DSL lines, although the growth is slowing due to the high household penetration of 87.9% on 30 June.
KPN (including its brands the Telfort and XS4ALL) continues to reign as largest broadband provider with a 40.7% market share followed by cable operator Ziggo with 26.7% and UPC with 15.6%.
Telecompaper estimates retail revenues for the consumer broadband market decreased by 2.6% to EUR 496 million in the second quarter.

    Film directors sue Dutch cablers
    August 16, 2013 08.13 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Vevam, the association of Dutch film and TV directors, has filed for a court injunction against Dutch cable operators UPC and Ziggo.
The first hearing took place on Wednesday, August 14 at the Court of Amsterdam and the judge said he would rule within a month.
The group claims the operators are showing films and TV programmes without the directors’ authorisation, and Vevam wants compensation for its members for the broadcast rights.
The cablers stopped paying the directors in October 2012, claiming that the distribution method has changed.
Formerly, the cable operators received the signal from a satellite or terrestrial feed for further distribution on their networks, but now the programmes are directly injected into the network.
This means that cable carriage is now the primary distribution rather than a secondary one, removing the basis for additional payments to the director’ association.
Talks earlier this year with RoDAP, the cable operators’ negotiating platform with producers and broadcasters, failed to reach an agreement on royalties for directors.
RoDAP has resisted paying for the rights, saying Vevam should be satisfied with a portion of the proceeds from cable carriage agreements.

Young people prefer OTT over legacy pay-TV
    August 16, 2013 07.54 Europe/London By Robert Briel

TDG survey young peopleYoung people living at home with their parents are, once they move out on their own, more likely to subscribe to an online pay-TV service such as Netflix or Hulu Plus than a legacy pay-TV service such as cable or satellite.
This data is drawn from The Diffusion Group (TDG)’s latest multi-client primary research project, Late Millennials: A Study in Media Behavior.
“Much has been said about younger adults and the choices they may make about their home TV services once they leave their parents’ home,” notes Michael Greeson, president and principal analyst for TDG. “Yet little research has been offered up to support the various hypotheses.”
TDG’s new research, says Greeson, makes it clear that tomorrow’s head-of-household is less favorably disposed than their predecessors toward legacy services and more favorably disposed toward OTT TV services.
Greeson admits these dispositions could change over time if OTT TV services are unable to acquire the content these consumers will want as they marry, have children, and move up the career ladder. “In the end, it will still be less about the conduit and more about the content and value the service provides.”
TDG surveyed a random sample of more than 2,000 Late Millennials (in this case, adult broadband users between the ages of 18 and 24), half of which were living at home with their parents. 49% of the latter group said they were highly inclined to sign up for an online subscription video service once they move out on their own, compared to only 31% that were highly inclined to sign up for a traditional pay-TV service when they set up their own household (a difference of 58%).
“While this data can be spun to rationalize a number of arguments, the simplest insight may be the most profound,” notes Greeson. “The very fact that young consumers perceive online video services as somehow more desirable or necessary than incumbent pay-TV services says volumes about the future of video.”

Satellite STB shipments continue to rise in 2013
    August 16, 2013 07.49 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Worldwide digital cable set-top box unit shipments increased by 10% in 2012 and are expected to continue to increase modestly in 2013 with revenues of nearly $20 million.
US research firm MRG continues to watch and analyse the shift from analogue and SD to digital and HD respectively. These shifts are driving the deployment of the digital set-top box, particularly in countries like China and India, the first and second largest cable TV markets in the world.
According to MRG, satellite STBs continue to show strength as new providers continue to launch in regions such as Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East/Africa. Worldwide unit shipments reached nearly 109 million in 2012, up from about 100 million in 2011.
In 2013, MRG is projecting that satellite set-top box unit shipments will continue to rise slightly and long-term demand for satellite set-top boxes is expected to remain strong. While demand for IP STBs continued solidly in 2012, MRG expects unit shipments to flatten out and even marginally decrease as the IPTV market matures in 2013 and 2014.
Additionally, as part of being focused on the largest opportunities for STBs, MRG has also taken a deep dive into the pay-TV market in India to find a swirling maze of economic, political, legal and social factors that are critical to business models and financial success. In spite of many roadblocks, this market is set to see substantial growth in several segments, notably STBs and OTT services. The pay-TV market in India is expected to reach 167 million subscribers in 2017, up from 140 million in 2012, showing a 3.6% CAGR during this period.
DTH, alone, is expected to cross 100 million subscribers by 2017. Following digitization, by 2016 DTH will surpass cable TV penetration, which comprised 67% of the pay-TV market in 2012. The opportunity for STB imports into this country will exceed 100 million in 2017 while more than 60 million will be produced locally.
