    Telekom Austria reports TV gains
    August 13, 2013

Telekom Austria made TV gains in its first half and second quarter results but reported a decline in revenues, which it attributed to regulatory burdens, fierce competition and macroeconomic headwinds in CEE.

The launch of its new A1 tariff in Austria led to bundle subscriber growth in Q2 of 1.04 million, of which 227,800 are TV customers, compared to 206,300 in the same period last year.

“Convergence as well as internet and TV upselling partly compensate effects of voice loss,” Austria Telekom said.

In Bulgaria, where the firm owns MTel, TV subscriber figures in Q2 reached 73,000, up from 41,700 in Q2 2012.

Croatian TV subscriber numbers, where the firm owns Croatia VIP, were also up in the quarter to 149,800, compared to 120,000 in Q2 2012.

Overall revenues in the quarter were €1.043 billion, down 1.9% year-on-year. EBITDA was down 9.5% to €330.3 million. However, net income was up 54.2% year-on-year to €52.5 million.

ADB Group upbeat despite sales dip
    August 13, 2013

Digital TV technology firm Advanced Digital Broadcast Group (ADB Group) remained upbeat despite reporting a slowdown in sales during the first half the year.

ADB said that revenue for the first six months of 2013 reached US$210.4 million (€158.4 million), a 1.5% decrease from the US$213.7 million recorded in the same period of the last year. The firm attributed this to “stronger than usual digital TV equipment sales due to the European Football Championships and the Olympic Games” during the first half of 2012.

Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) came to US$16.1 million, up 3.1% from US$ 15.7 million last year, while gross profit was US$59.6 million, up 0.9% year-on-year.

“The first half of 2013 has been slightly slower in sales development than last year, but the overall picture is more satisfying. The margin development is going in the right direction,” said ADB Group chairman Andrew Rybicki.

“Our strategy is to focus on margins and cash flow generation, and not grow the top line for the sake of it. Our staff has fully adopted this strategy, and the results are starting to show it. Furthermore, I’m delighted that we have our new CEO, Peter Balchin, to lead the effort of executing our strategy. It is an important step forward for our company.”

Smart TV owners the most likely cord cutters
    August 13, 2013

Adult broadband users with a smart TV are twice as likely as those with non- internet-connected TVs to cancel their current pay-TV service, according to a new report from The Diffusion Group.

The US study said that 8.8% of connected-TV users, versus just 3.5% of non-smart TV owners, said they were “highly inclined” to cancel their traditional pay TV service.

Some 54.8% of smart-TV users were “highly uninclined” to cancel, fewer than the 65% of non-smart-TV users that said the same.

“While it is undeniable that the majority of adult broadband users that currently subscribe to a traditional pay-TV service have little or no interest in cancelling their traditional TV service, the fact that on average 7% of this segment are would-be ‘cord cutters’ (highly likely to cancel in the next six months, answering 6 or greater on a 7-point scale) should be of concern to operators,” said the study.

    Moody’s upgrades ITV
    August 13, 2013

Credit ratings agency Moody’s has upgraded ITV’s debt ratings after the UK broadcaster reported an increase in ad revenues.

“We have upgraded ITV’s rating to Baa3 [from Ba1] primarily because the company has continued to successfully increase its total non-net advertising related revenues, by 23% since 2012, as a proportion of its total external revenues, while also reducing its leverage,” said Moody’s lead analyst for ITV Christian Azzi.

“The upgrade also reflects our expectation that ITV’s high-quality content will continue to support the company’s share of advertising and share of viewing, and that the latter, as well as the company’s share of commercial impact, is likely to stabilise in 2013 and increase in 2014.”
