BBC boosts remote newsgathering with LiveU
    Michelle Clancy | 12-08-2013

BBC News has expanded its use of LiveU's portable video-over-cellular technology, deploying both backpack and belt-clip mobile uplink solutions around the world.
The BBC has broadened its use of the technology to enhance its global newsgathering capabilities. In the US, LiveU's LU70 backpack and LU40-S belt-clip units have been used to bring coverage of events the scale of Hurricane Sandy, the presidential elections, the Boston bombing and the aftermath of the Oklahoma tornado to viewers with footage supplied to BBC News, BBC World and BBC World America.
The expansion builds on a long relationship: BBC News has been using LiveU technology for upwards of four years, including at last year's London Olympics, with units now deployed in India, China, Russia and the US as well as across the UK. The broadcaster is using the units over a wide variety of networks including 4G/LTE.
"We are very pleased to see the way BBC News has expanded its use of our solutions and appreciate their long-term usage of LiveU technology," said Samuel Wasserman, LiveU's CEO. "From transmitting live from the Moscow underground and the Great Wall of China to using it close to the North Korean border, we are excited to see the way that the broadcaster has recognised that bonded cellular technology is a key tool for global news content creation and delivery."
The technology has been supplied by LiveU's UK distributor Garland Partners Ltd, alongside a full service package.

OTE sees satellite expansion in Greece
    Michelle Clancy | 12-08-2013

Greek incumbent OTE found second-quarter success with its satellite TV offer, as it added a total of 174,964 subscribers to its ranks.
The number represents a 129.2% increase from the year earlier, when it added just around 85,000 subs. But the momentum has been growing: in the first quarter, it added around 149,000 subscribers. And with the addition of Premier League football coverage in the second half, OTE said that growth should continue.
The satellite success represented the operator's lone growth area: its IPTV numbers stayed flat for the quarter. OTE revenue came in at €1,002.5 million in the second quarter, an 8.6% decline on a year earlier. Net income was down 39.5% to total €57.2 million.
OTE had success in Romania as well, where Romtelecom, which it backs, grew its TV subscriber total by 7.3%, ending the second quarter with a total of 1,295,888 subscribers as its cable TV footprint expanded in urban areas.

Charter taps TelVue for Eastern cable infrastructure
    Michelle Clancy | 12-08-2013

Charter Media Eastern Division has selected TelVue to expand its existing local origination and leased access (LO/LA) channel network.
Charter will deploy an enterprise level system with edge-based TelVue HyperCaster IP broadcast servers, all scheduled and managed from a central traffic system located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
Charter said the decision to use TelVue was based on the successful rollout of TelVue HyperCasters at Charter Media West. "The benefit of this system is lower cap-ex and op-ex costs, driving the cost per channel down significantly while improving the workflow and the bottom line," the company said.
Charter Media's LO/LA channels will be played out from multiple TelVue HyperCaster IP broadcast servers, to be deployed in various markets including Asheville, Spartanburg, Birmingham, Huntsville and other locales.
The key networking feature is the use of CCMS Plus traffic integration software in each HyperCaster which imports schedule files generated by Charter's traffic system – the same system used to schedule spot ads. Each TelVue HyperCaster retrieves and loads the content and schedules. If any scheduled content is missing, the HyperCaster will notify the Production Department. The HyperCaster sends a verification (VER) file back to the archive server, to be retrieved by the traffic system. The process is fully automated. Neither the traffic nor the production team ever have to directly access the servers at the headends.

iDeer upgrades Blu-ray app for PC, Mac
    Michelle Clancy | 12-08-2013

The iDeer Blu-ray Player is now available in version 1.3.1, which allows any Blu-ray disc and movie to play on Windows and Mac operating systems, including the latest Windows 8.1 and Mac OS X 10.8.3.
Blu-ray is popular all over the world for its large storage capacity and HD video effect. However, Windows and Mac operating systems do not offer native Blu-ray playback support, which makes it difficult to play Blu-ray on either OS without an external playback solution.
The iDeer Blu-ray player is a multimedia player supporting all latest Blu-ray discs, DVD, multiple video and audio formats. The 1080p video and DTS 5.1 audio systems are included to boost the audiovisual experience. In the latest update, the quality on both Windows and Mac systems was optimised, along with the user interface. And, the iDeer Blu-ray Player can play a larger range of Blu-ray and DVD discs, including newer films such as The Great Gatsby, 42, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, A Good Day to Die Hard and Oblivion.

    Michelle Clancy | 12-08-2013

Alcon Entertainment has acquired film and television rights to the Chicken Soup for the Soul brand, and is planning to finance and produce a feature film that shares the brand's name.
The Chicken Soup for the Soul film will be produced by Alcon and Kerner Entertainment. The latter's principal, Jordan Kerner, was also responsible for the Smurfs 1&2, Charlotte's Web, George of the Jungle and Fried Green Tomatoes.
Writer Brandon Camp (Love Happens) will write the screenplay, which is inspired by a variety of characters and stories from the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Warner Bros will release via Alcon's output deal.

Kerner added: "I have so much respect for the brand Bill Rouhana has built and continues to build and accelerate at Chicken Soup for the Soul. It is based on inspiration from true life stories, an inspiration which is much needed in the world today, as well as a set of beliefs that I hold near and dear."

VIZIO brings M-GO online streaming to smart TVs
    Michelle Clancy | 12-08-2013

The M-GO streaming media service is expanding its reach with a roll out across VIZIO's smart TV platforms.
Available via the VIZIO Internet Apps and VIZIO Internet Apps Plus portals from the TVs, M-GO will give owners of VIZIO smart TVs and Co-Star streaming players unlimited access to M-GO's library of movies and TV shows, which the company says are often available earlier than via Netflix. For instance, the Ryan Gosling-Bradley Cooper's crime drama, the Place Beyond the Pines, is available now, as is Oblivion with Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman, and G.I. Joe Retaliation, starring Bruce Willis and The Roc. Users pay on a per-show or per-movie basis.
"We chose to partner with M-GO across our suite of devices because we believe they deliver an unprecedented digital entertainment experience," said Matt McRae, VIZIO CTO "With M-GO's breakthrough service combined with VIZIO's industry-leading Smart TV platform, we are proud to deliver a world-class entertainment experience for all."
For VIZIO consumers that have purchased their HDTV or Co-Star in the past year, an M-GO button at the top of the remote provides one-click access to the on-demand service.
"Making access to the movies and TV shows people care about easier is M-GO's mission," said John Batter, CEO of M-GO. "Going live on millions of VIZIO smart TVs and streaming boxes is a huge milestone in giving consumers the power to enjoy an entire world of entertainment at their fingertips."

America Movil plans €7.2 billion KPN bid
    August 13, 2013

kpn_logoLatin American telco America Movil has announced plans to make a €7.2 billion bid for all issued and outstanding shares in KPN in the Netherlands.

Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim’s America Movil already owns 30% of KPN and the new €2.40 per-share offer for the remaining 70% marks a 35.4% premium over the firm’s closing price in the last 30 days.

In a statement, America Movil said it plans to buy the majority stake in the business to “facilitate greater operational cooperation and co-ordination between the two companies, to exploit all areas for potential partnerships and to intensify the realisation of synergy potential for both companies.”

America Movil first bought into KPN more than a year ago and was its first investment outside the Americas as part of its efforts to “achieve geographical diversification and create attractive long-term returns for its shareholders.”

The firm has since bought a minority stake in Telekom Austria and recently invested US$40 million (€46 million) in Second screen app and media recognition specialist Shazam.

The KPN takeover bid comes after KPN announced last month that, subject to shareholder approval, it would sell its German subsidiary E-Plus to Telefonica Deutschland in exchange for €5 billion in cash and a 17.6% stake in Telefonica Deutschland.

“América Móvil is carefully evaluating the merits of the proposed transaction and will make a final determination in relation to the exercise of its voting rights at the upcoming Extraordinary General Meeting of KPN,” said America Movil.

In a statement confirming America Movil’s planned offer, KPN said that it will “carefully consider” the intended bid and “expects to convene an extraordinary general meeting related to the sale of E-Plus to Telefónica Deutschland in the coming weeks.”

America Movil said it intends to submit an offer memorandum to the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets, following which it will place its bid. It said it expects this to take place during September.

Scripps targets international growth as revenue grows
    August 13, 2013

Scripps Networks InteractiveScripps Networks Interactive is targeting more international growth following new launches in Europe, LatinAmerica and Asia and a revenue hike.

International operations saw an 80.7% year-on-year hike in operating revenue for the three months to June 30, 2013, its latest financial results revealed, up from US$10 million in 2012 to US$18 million.

The growth was primarily attributed to the acquisitions of Travel Channel International and Asian Food Channel, in March 2012 and April 2013, respectively.

However, the segment also saw a US$28.4 million loss, which was attributed to continued investment in nets such as Travel Channel, Food Network and digital initiatives.

SNI’s CFO Joseph NeCastro pointed to recent launches of Travel Channel in Eastern Europe and new business in Latin America and Asia and said:

“Part of the reason for some of the accelerated spending is we are going deeper into each of those areas of the world, and we’re going to continue to invest there.”

He added: “At this point, we are working very hard to execute the integration and the expansion of the Travel Channel International and now, certainly, of the Asian Food Channel and along with the sort of organic growth of the existing networks in new territories.”

International investments had “tended be smaller deals, but things that fit very, very well with the portfolio and with our management structure and team. We do have an appetite to do something bigger, we would love to, but we’re going to be disciplined about things that we think fit within the portfolio and that might provide a good return for our shareholders”.

Overall company operating revenue was up 10.8% to US$651.1 million, while profit grew 12.3% to US$319.7 milion.

SNI’s portfolio also includes HGTV, DIY Network, Cooking Channel and Great American Country.
