    Growth slows for Telekom's Entertain
    Jörn Krieger | 08-08-2013

The loss of the Bundesliga rights to Sky Deutschland has had a severe impact on Entertain, with the IPTV platform of national German telco Deutsche Telekom gaining only 42,000 new customers in Q2 2013 compared to 70,000 in Q1.
In Q2 2012, Entertain acquired over 100,000 new customers. In total, the IPTV service had 2.08 million customers on 30 June 2013.
With the kick-off of the new football season, Telekom will offer Entertain customers the Sky Bundesliga package instead of its own Bundesliga service LIGA total!. It seems that this has resulted in many households considering that Entertain is no longer an alternative to Sky.

Claro HDTV and Newco join anti-piracy alliance
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 09-08-2013

Alianza contra la piratería, a pay-TV association which fights against audiovisual piracy throughout Latin America, has announced that Claro HDTV and Newco have joined the group. Both are among the leaders of pay-TV operators in Brazil.
Brazil is one of the main focuses of Alianza, as it registers one of the highest piracy rates in the region and, the same time, has one of the greatest growths in pay-TV market, with customers increasing 22.9% over last year, according to Anatel.
"Piracy is a critical problem for the industry, and Alianza has the instruments needed to fight it," explained Antonio João, from Claro HDTV.
Newco's Silvia Jafet added that the problem affects a lot of different companies, and that this "delays the sector's growth and generates unemployment".
"The industry is growing fast, and having two Brazilian leaders with us is fundamental," explained Michael Hartman, vice president of legal issues of DirecTV and member of Alianza. "Each new member brings us closer to stopping pay-TV piracy in Latin America."
Since it was created at the beginning of the year, the association has already taken some concrete action. In Colombia, a pirate decoder distributor was caught and sent to prison. In Uruguay, over 10,000 free-to-air (FTA) receptors which had a special technology enabling users to avoid pay-TV operators' control were destroyed. Most recently, FTA decoders were also found and confiscated in Brazil, and a lot of information about the pirate networks has been gathered.

August launch for Africa News Network 7 on DStv
    Rebecca Hawkes | 09-08-2013

Africa News Network 7 (ANN7), a 24-hour news channel from South Africa's Infinity Media is to go live on the pay-TV platform DStv on 21 August.
The announcement, from DStv's owner MultiChoice, comes less than a week after the launch of a 24-hour news channel from state broadcaster South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
The new channel from Infinity Media will, said MultiChoice, focus on "constructive, nation-building stories in the interest of building a culture of unity and pride in South Africa".
It will provide South African viewers news and politics, sports, business and entertainment news.
Former Government spokesman Jimmy Manyi will host a weekly hard-talk show called Straight Talk, while former M-Net investigative journalist Chantal Rutter Dros, media personality Gerry Rantseli-Elsdon and kwaito musician Arthur Mafokate will also be presenters on ANN7.
"I am looking forward to presenting viewers with a channel that is unique in its profile and choice of programmes," says Nazeem Howa, director of ANN7's parent company Infinity Media.
The channel claims to have "the latest newsroom automation systems, cutting-edge electronic news gathering technology and a network of sharp, young journalists and experienced editors who will give a fresh perspective to the TV viewers of the country."
MultiChoice South Africa's chief executive Collins Khumalo has welcomed the upcoming launch: the new channel will join South Africa's existing 24-hour news channels eNCA and SABC News on DStv.

Manoranjan TV to launch new Hindi music channel
    Rebecca Hawkes | 09-08-2013

A new free-to-air music channel, Manoranjan Music, is to be launched in the Hindi heartlands of India on 15 August by Manoranjan TV.
The channel will be available in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, where the network's other channels Manoranjan TV and Khusboo TV are already well received, reports Exchange4Media.
"Music as an entity connects with everybody. The availability of bandwidth post digitisation has created more room for channels to enter the space," Sahib Chopra, owner of Creative Channel Advertising and Marketing, which owns Manoranjan TV, told the publication.
"Music is the only genre that has maximum number of channels. Our penetration is robust in the HSM market and we want to capitalise on it as much as possible."
The new music channel will reportedly air classic Bollywood music and trailers for new Hindi films.

Bolivia's first satellite to be launched in December
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 09-08-2013

The first Bolivian satellite, Tupac Katari, is almost complete, with only some final testing remaining before its launch, which the Government has set for 20 December 2013.
The executive general director of the Bolivian Space Agency (ABE), Iván Zambrana, announced details of the project development, saying: "We only need some small things to be done before November and the satellite will be 100% finished."
However, a month ago Bolivian minister Vladimir Sánchez said that the project was ready.
The satellite is being built in China and the project is progressing almost to schedule.
A group of Bolivian engineers will travel to China, from where the satellite will be launched. They're expected to arrive on 12 August to learn about controlling the system.
The Tupac Katari, which will take Internet, TV and mobile communications throughout Bolivia, especially rural areas, will take off in the Jiuquan space centre, in northwest China.
The project also includes the construction of two control stations, one in La Paz and the other in the eastern city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

    Network Broadcast focuses on Brazil
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 09-08-2013

Network Broadcast, the Argentinean over-the-top (OTT) and IPTV technology developer, is focusing on the Brazilian market and intensifying its presence in the broadcasting field.
The company has opened a new lab and has shown its technology at ABTA, the pay-TV expo which took place in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Network Broadcast is already an established provider of direct-to-home (DTH) and OTT solutions in the country, and it now has a centre for research and development and a new lab incorporating the latest digital TV technologies.
The Argentinean company has nearly 70 operations in Latin America as well as technical staff always on hand. According to the firm, this makes the difference in a market which is constantly growing and changing, and at the same time helps customers enjoy the wide offering the market brings.
"Network Broadcast evolves at the same time as technology" says Judson Vieira, business development engineer, Network Broadcasting. "The participation in ABTA means we are in an expanding moment," he added.
During the ABTA 2013 expo, the company presented NBGUI, an interface for set-top boxes which has achieved international success and is to be released for the Brazilian market. NBGUI is a flexible interface which works for different decoders and allows the brand to customise the display and the service offered.

América Móvil tenders offer to buy KPN
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 09-08-2013

América Móvil has finally confirmed recent rumours, announcing an offer to buy 100% of Netherlands-based company KPN. The decision comes barely two weeks after Telefónica's offer to buy E-Plus, KPN's German subsidiary.
The Mexican company currently owns less than 30% of KPN but Carlos Slim's corporation recently broke the agreement with the rest of KPN's shareholders to enable it to buy more shares.
Telefónica, which is a direct competitor of América Móvil in Latin America, offered €8,000 million for E-Plus, thus changing the European market and allowing the Mexican company to launch a takeover bid for KPN.
KPN was América Móvil's first investment outside the Americas and the company now "aims to support KPN's plans in a rapidly changing environment," it said in an official release. If the sale goes ahead, América Móvil will have over 50% of the votes in KPN's board, which would enable it to stop any potential deal between Telefónica and the Dutch telco.
América Móvil has offered a price for share of €2.40, a premium of over 35% of the average price during last month.

SES wins 15-year free-to-air deal in South Africa
    Joseph O'Halloran | 09-08-2013

Leading satellite operator SES has closed a 15-year contract with Platco Digital to broadcast a new free-to-air service in South Africa.
The sister company of the South African independent broadcaster e.tv will take two transponders to reach audiences in South Africa’s urban and remote areas through direct-to-home (DTH) transmission of a new TV channel platform. Platco Digital has given itself an option for additional capacity on the SES-5 satellite at 5 degrees East, one of the company’s flagship orbital slots, in 2014 in line with future plans to expand across Southern Africa.
“Platco Digital will offer local and international television businesses the opportunity to broadcast free-to-air channels on the DTH platform, in addition to the Digital Terrestrial Television and Mobile TV platforms,” commented Marcel Golding CEO of Sabido Investments, a media group with holdings in a variety of broadcasting, content, production and distribution businesses and owner of both Platco Digital and e.tv. “Sabido is excited about this new multi-platform initiative, which will provide South African and African viewers more entertaining, informative and educational programming for free.”
“This agreement is an important step for the growth of the major South African free-to-air broadcaster and the development of direct-to-home TV reception in Africa’s dynamic emerging markets,” added Ferdinand Kayser, chief commercial officer of SES. “It shows that satellite can help broadcasters overcome the challenges of terrestrial coverage, reach large audiences and extend their services with free-to-air programmes. Based on our extensive experience in other parts of the world, SES is well established to provide broadcasters with the highest quality satellite capacity to build a high value neighbourhood and grow DTH satellite TV across the continent.”

YuMe rings Wall Street bell on IPO
    Parent Category: News | 09-08-2013

Digital online video brand advertising solutions provider YuMe has opened trading for initial public offering by ringing the famous Opening Bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
The opening price of the 5,125,000 shares of common stock was $9 per share with underwriters granted a 30-day option to purchase up to an additional 768,750 shares of YuMe common stock from certain selling stockholders at the IPO price.
Citigroup, Deutsche Bank Securities and Barclays are acting as joint book-running managers for the offering. Needham & Company and Piper Jaffray are acting as co-managers.
"As consumers’ media consumption continues to fragment across screens, YuMe solves the digital video challenges of brand advertisers by making it easier for advertisers to discover receptive audiences in attentive situations, like never before,” commented Jayant Kadambi, co-founder & CEO of YuMe. “What better place to share our story with the world, than on the biggest stage in business, the NYSE.”
