Betfred becomes BT Sport’s first commercial gaming partner
    Joseph O'Halloran | 07-08-2013

As it makes a strong start to life, BT Sport is to make all of its three channels available in Betfred’s 1,370 bookmakers across the UK.
The increasingly popular UK bookmaker, which has benefited a lot from football gaming, is BT’s first big commercial contract in the gaming sector. All of the Betfred shops will have access to BT Sport — comprising BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN — which will be delivered as part of the bookmaker's own Betfred TV service for the next three years.
“We are delighted to announce our first major contract in the gaming space,” said Bruce Cuthbert, director of commercial customers, BT Sport. It is fantastic that Betfred has signed up to put BT Sport in all of its bookmakers. As the largest independent bookmaker in the UK, we could not have hoped for a bigger name as an early customer.”
Added Betfred managing director, John Haddock: “We are delighted to have secured a deal with BT Sport and we are looking forward to showing some top quality action in all our 1,370 shops nationwide. As well as showing the live sport we will continue to have the best offers on the high street including special boosts for our in-play betting.”

    Twitter activity influencing TV viewing
    August 7, 2013

twitter thumbTwitter activity does help drive audience tune-in for TV shows according to a new study by Nielsen.

The research firm claims its Twitter Causation Study is the first to provide statistical evidence of a “two-way causal influence” between broadcast TV tune-in and Twitter conversation around that show, confirming what many in the industry have long suspected.

Nielsen said that after analysing minute-to-minute trends for 221 broadcast primetime program episodes, in 48% of the episodes, live TV ratings had a statistically significant impact in related tweets.

The volume of tweets also caused statistically significant changes in live TV ratings among 29% of the episodes, the research found.

“Using time series analysis, we saw a statistically significant causal influence indicating that a spike in TV ratings can increase the volume of Tweets, and, conversely, a spike in Tweets can increase tune-in,” said Paul Donato, chief research officer, Nielsen.

Ali Rowghani, Twitter’s chief operating officer added: “These results substantiate what many of our TV partners have been telling us anecdotally for years: namely, that Twitter drives tune-in, especially for live, linear television programming.”

A previous Nielsen study from March found that the amount of buzz a TV show gets on Twitter directly correlates to audience figures, but Nielsen said at the time that this research did not prove causality between the two.

Sky Deutschland boosted by football coverage
    August 7, 2013

Sky Deutchland / Sky SportsSky Deutschland reported strong growth in its second quarter, with viewer numbers boosted by the operator’s sport line-up and coverage of domestic and international football.

Sky recorded increased operating momentum with total customers up 47,900 to 3.453 million in the quarter, with CEO Brian Sullivan commenting that “with Bundesliga exclusivity, an unrivalled sport offering, great new channels, innovative products and a significantly expanded distribution position, we have set the stage for the second half of this year and beyond.”

The firm said that the 50th anniversary Bundesliga season provided a “major boost to viewer numbers for Sky’s coverage” with its Saturday coverage reaching a peak audience share of 26.2% among male viewers aged between 14 and 49 years with up to 1.48 million viewers tuning in for a single matchday during the season

This year’s UEFA Champions League, which had an all-German final of Bayern Munich against Borussia Dortmund, was also “the most successful ever on Sky.” The four semi-finals and the final resulted in an 80% year-on-year increase in average rating, delivering 5.52 million total viewers in subscriber households, according to Sky.

Elsewhere, Sky added 83,600 premium HD customers in the quarter to reach 1.697 million, meaning that 49.1% of Sky subscribers now take Sky premium HD.

This followed the recent launch of Sport1 US HD, the exclusive addition of MGM HD, and Eurosport 2 HD, as well as the introduction earlier this year of Syfy HD, 13th Street HD and E! Entertainment HD. Sky said it now offers 69 high definition channels and promised “more to come” – including Universal Channel HD, which is due to go live in September.

Sky said that its Sky+ DVR service experienced strong demand, with customers growing by 105,800 in the quarter to 1.17 million and 33.9% of Sky subscribers now using the Sky+ free video-on-demand service, Sky Anytime.

Over-the-top service Sky Go, which lets Sky customers in Germany and Austria access content from a range of devices also performed well. In the quarter Sky Go recorded almost 16.7 million customer logins, compared to 6.9 million during Q2 2012, with HBO series Game of Thrones streamed more than one million times since April 2013 alone.

Overall Sky Deutschland reported revenues of €375.4m, up 15% year-on-year, while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation was €36.8 million, up 60% year-on-year.

MTG has inked a deal for a controlling share of Bulgarian digital conglomerate Darik News and Net info.

The pan-European broadcast group has agreed to buy a 70% share of the Bulgarian business for an undisclosed sum.
The agreement will give MTG a range of digital assets in the country including the dariknews.bg news website, the gong.bg sport news site and the vremeto.bg and sinoptik.bg weather sites.

The deal also included the abv.bg email platform, vbox7.com video clip site and edna.bg entertainment news destination.

Darik generated revenues of €4.2 million and was profitable for the full year 2012, MTG said.

The company said the acquisition is part of its strategy to drive digital growth under the MTGx banner.

Jørgen Madsen Lindemann, president and CEO of MTG (pictured), said the deal was a milestine in effort to expand its presence in Bulgaria: “It significantly expands our overall customer proposition in Bulgaria, and will enable us to leverage our content in new and innovative ways across a number of popular platforms, to reach more people than ever before with the entertainment of their choice,” he said. “We will also be able to extend our advertising proposition and reach, and to offer advertisers more extensive and finely tuned products than ever before.”

BBC Knowledge and HD launch on Digiturk
    August 7, 2013

BBC Worldwide has signed a deal with Digiturk that will see its BBC Knowledge and BBC HD channels launch on the Turkish satellite platform for the first time.

The expanded deal came as the BBC’s commercial arm renewed its carriage deal for BBC Entertainment and BBC World News, which are already available on Digiturk.

The doubling of the BBC’s presence on the Digiturk platform marks the continued growth BBC Worldwide’s channel portfolio in Europe.

Factual network BBC Knowledge has already launched this year in Cyprus, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, while BBC HD – which offers a selection of documentaries, entertainment and arts programming in HD – is now available on all of Turkey’s pay TV platforms.

“This is terrific news for us, and for viewers. Now, as well as BBC Entertainment and BBC World News, an even wider audience will be able to watch more of our world-class programming. This is yet another big step in our channels portfolio expansion throughout CEMA,” said BBC Worldwide’s executive vice president for CEMA, Ian McDonough.

    Kit Digital restructure approved
    August 7, 2013

TV technology provider Kit Digital said that its plan to rebrand itself as Piksel and relaunch the business at IBC in September has been approved by the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

Kit Digital filed for voluntary bankruptcy protection three months ago in a bid to “cleanse itself of legacy issues, including financial, legal and regulatory matters.”

Under its reorganisation plan, the business will officially rebrand on August 29 and draw on its existing suite of software applications, industry partnerships, and professional and managed services. Kit added that Piksel’s new leadership team remains in place and is focused on “a number of new initiatives and opportunities that will create value for customers and shareholders.”
