Connected TV becoming the norm in Germany
    August 6, 2013 07.14 Europe/London By Robert Briel

So far, 58% of all TV sets sold in Germany this year are connected devices.
The percentage is expected to rise to 70% of all new TV sets sold before the end of the year. This compares with an average of 47% during 2012.
According to research, carried out on behalf of high-tech association BITKOM by market research institute GfK, in three households (30%) in Germany is equipped with a smart TV.
“For the majority of the buyers network connectivity on the TV is now just as important as is is for the computer,” said Michael Schidlack, BITKOM expert on consumer electronics.
“Smart TVs make the audience independent of the programme broadcast because they offer push-button access to various online services such as the libraries of TV channels.”
Many Germans now also use stand-alone devices to connected their TV set to the web, one in ten viewers connect to the internet via such a device. 8% use an internet-capable Blu-ray player, 5% use their game console.
Schidlack: “Devices with online access are increasingly in demand. This way people with older televisions can also access online services. Moreover, many of these devices can be connected to a smartphone or tablet and can play media from these wirelessly. “

    Blinkx grabs Grab Media
    August 6, 2013 10.08 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Blinkx has acquired online video content syndication and advertising platform Grab Media.
The Internet media platform said it was an all cash transaction, but did not disclose the sums involved. Blinkx hopes it will be able to add incremental audience and augment its relationships with advertisers, publishers and content providers.
“In addition, blinkx plans to hire the existing Grab Media team — a talented, multi-faceted group with extensive experience and relationships in online video content syndication and advertising,” said S. Brian Mukherjee, CEO of Blinkx. “This transaction, while modest in size, enables us to meet growing consumer demand for online video, and provides us with an established platform to distribute and monetize these interactions across desktops, tablets, smartphones and connected TVs.”
Blinkx anticipates the move will improve its syndication offering.

CBS rejects TWC la carte solution to retrans row
    Joseph O'Halloran | 06-08-2013

The retrans row between Time Warner Cable and CBS has hit a new low after the content firm rejected out of hand an offer to show its programme on an la carte basis.
In an open letter to CBS president and CEO Les Moonves, TWC Chairman and CEO Glen Britt, proposed that the two firms immediately agree to resume carriage with new economics restoring popular programmes to screens after the dispute had seen CBS disappear from the bouquets of TWC customers once the current contract expired.
Claiming to be acting for the benefit of consumers, Britt offered to engage in a new model for carriage if CBS was still insistent in asking for fees which have been described by TWC as “unprecedented, unreasonable and unacceptable”
In his letter Britt said: “We write to propose that CBS and Time Warner Cable immediately agree to resume carriage with the new economics TWC reluctantly agreed to during our negotiations, while employing all the other terms and conditions of our recently expired contracts. Although those terms are not ideal to CBS or TWC … we believe we should continue to live with them in the interest of restoring CBS immediately for the benefit of consumers. Alternatively, if you are unwilling to agree to this proposal, we would also be willing to resume carriage by allowing CBS to make its stations available on an la carte basis and on terms of its choosing, with 100% of that price remitted to CBS. This way, rather than debating the point, we would allow customers to decide for themselves how much value they ascribe to CBS programming. “
Britt also called on CBS to cease immediately its blocking of CBS.com content to TWC broadband customers, whether or not it accepted or rejected the proposals. However he did not have to wait long for an answer with a CBS spokesperson, as quoted by the Reuters news agency, slamming the new offer as “a sham” and “a public relations vehicle designed to distract from the fact that Time Warner Cable is not negotiating in good faith."

    Sky Germany increases subscriber number
    Jrn Krieger | 06-08-2013

Pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland is growing faster, having won 47,900 new subscribers in Q2 2013 – more than in the same period last year (47,100).
This brings Sky's total subscribers to 3.45 million compared to 3.13 million in Q2 2012.
Turnover rose by 15% to €375.4 million compared with last year with the operative result (EBITDA) climbing by 60% to €36.8 million. Below the line, it saw a loss of €900,000– considerably less than in Q2 2012 when the loss amounted to €13.8 million.
HDTV remained a key growth factor with the number of Sky Premium HD subscriber rising by 83,600 to 1.7 million. This means that almost half of all Sky customers (49.1%) have now opted for the HD proposition. In total, Sky currently offers 69 HD channels with further services to follow. The next addition will be Universal Channel HD on 5 September 2013.
"We had a great second quarter with continued strong operational and financial performance highlighted by a positive quarterly and half-year EBITDA," CEO Brian Sullivan commented. "With Bundesliga exclusivity, an unrivalled sport offering, great new channels, innovative products and a significantly expanded distribution position, we have set the stage for the second half of this year and beyond."
Sky expects the EBITDA to be positive throughout the full year 2013 and continue to grow strongly thereafter. However, the company still isn't saying when it expects to reach black figures below the line.

Ugandan TV, radio blackout during digital TV upgrade
    Rebecca Hawkes | 06-08-2013

14 television stations and a host of radio networks have been off air while the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation's mast in Kololo is upgraded to support the migration to digital TV.
"UBC in partnership with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is in the final stages of implementing the digital terrestrial television (DTT) project for greater Kampala. We have reached the time of replacement of the antenna system to meet DTT requirements and this necessitates switching off all services to enable rigging work to complete the installations within the shortest possible time," explained Paul Kihika, acting managing director, UBC.
The TV stations affected comprise: Bukedde, Urban, CCTV, CRI, Citizen, East Africa TV, NTV, ITV, LTV, Miracle, Top, WBS, NBS and Record, as they all use the UBC mast, reports The New Vision.
"People have been complaining that Uganda is behind technology, now we are moving forward with the world. We need cooperation from the public," Godfrey Mutabazi, executive director, UCC, was quoted as saying.
The technical works were scheduled to be completed by Monday 5 August.
