Intelsat to raise USD 500 mln in IPO

    Tuesday 3 April 2013 | 15:12 CET | News
Satellite operator Intelsat has filed for an initial public offering of shares on the New York Stock Exchange. The Luxembourg-based company plans to sell 21.74 million common shares at an indicative price of USD 21-25 per share, suggesting gross proceeds of around USD 500 million at the mid-point of the range. This would give the company a free float of 21 percent of outstanding shares. It will also offer 3 million convertible, non-voting preference shares. The underwriters have an option to sell another 3.26 million common shares and 450,000 preferred shares if demand warrants. Intelsat is controlled by private equity firm BC Partners with around 76 percent of common shares, and the firm Silver Lake Partners holds a 17 percent stake. The company plans to use the proceeds of the IPO to pay down debt.

    Triple blow for nc+

    April 3, 2013 07.45 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul
The Facebook protest group Anty NC+ has snubbed an offer to meet with Julien Verley, the president of the new Polish DTH platform nc+.
At the same time, the Polish competition authority UOKiK has instituted proceedings against ITI Neovision, one of the founders of nc+, and there are also unconfirmed reports that another senior executive has left the new platform.
In an open letter to Julien Verley, the founder of Anty NC+ says that he cannot meet Julien Verley as he is not the official representative of the 50,000+ people that have so far signed up to the Facebook page.
He also says that there is no indication of any actions by nc+ to placate dissatisfied customers and proposes a number of things that the platform should do.
These include lengthening the migration time to nc+; creating a more flexible offer; keeping the number of unguaranteed channels to a minimum; and showing its clients more respect.
The UOKiK meanwhile says it is concerned with the unilateral manner in which ITI Neovision is to move n subscribers onto an 18-month binding contract with nc+ if they do not resign from their present contract by April 19.
It has also been reported that Kamila Barabasz, the HR at nc+, has resigned from her post.
She was with Canal + Cyfrowy since 2000 and her departure, if confirmed, would shortly follow that of Beata Monka, who was on the executive management team and responsible for business affairs, communication and rebranding.
She left the board of nc+ by mutual consent and with immediate effect at the end of last week.

NAB 2013: Vizrt, never.no unveil social TV graphics platform

    Editor | 03-04-2013
Attempting to take advantage of viewers using smartphones and tablets to comment on TV shows via social media, Vizrt has teamed with never.no to integrate live screen graphics with social media tools.
The companies’ aim is to make it easier for those using social media to share Instagram photos, videos, personal photos, Facebook posts, tweets, and other user-generated content (UGC) on live shows.
To address this, Vizrt and never.no have integrated the latter’s Interactivity Suite and other social media toolsets with Vizrt’s live graphics systems. As a result, the pair say, this platform gives broadcasters effective tools for harvesting, managing and presenting social media content within their live shows, allowing them to use their graphics systems to display what’s trending in social media, and promote interactive viewer participation. In addition, they can then build playlists or carousels of select social content they want to display within live Vizrt graphics and push them to air.
“The social TV market is quickly becoming mature, and it’s fun to see new and interesting formats emerge, almost on a weekly basis. We’re beginning to see a new way of producing TV, quite simply. Trending and polling, using geo-located and in other ways segmented data provides new and very interesting insights,” said Lars Lauritzsen, CEO of never.no. “With Vizrt, the gold standard in broadcast visualisations, these insights spring to life and become the basis of innovative storytelling. The next big paradigm shift, we believe, is social TV advertising. The potential for commercialisation cannot be overstated.”
"Without tools specifically designed for social TV, broadcasters can quickly become overwhelmed by the volume of social media that’s being created,” added Petter Ole Jakobsen, CTO of Vizrt. “Our [joint solution] helps broadcasters maximise social media platforms to promote their shows and channels as well as harvest valuable data that can benefit their advertising and marketing.”

Netflix localisation plans hint at expansion

    April 3, 2013

In a posting on its official jobs page, Netflix said it was looking for “highly motivated individuals with the right mix of technical, organisational and communication skills to provide localisation for the Netflix experience in the following languages: Turkish, Dutch, Hindi, French, and Korean.”

Netflix said the candidates would translate and customise marketing, user interface and content materials for the target market, and said native fluency was essential. Prior knowledge of the film and entertainment business was also listed as a plus.

In January, Netflix said in a letter to shareholders to accompany its fourth quarter 2012 earnings that it didn’t plan to launch in any additional markets in 2013 but was “evaluating several expansion markets for late 2013 or 2014.” However at the time added it had not made any decisions.

Netflix has advertised a number of times in the past for language specialists, most recently in October last year, when it called for Turkish, Dutch, Hindi, German, Italian, Norwegian, Korean, and Japanese speakers.

Netflix said at the time that there were many other reasons for it to hire language specialists including quality control on translations of movies and TV shows, relationships with content creators and with manufacturers of consumer electronics around the world.

The US-based firm has already expanded into Canada, Latin America, the UK and Ireland and, most recently, the Nordic markets, demonstrating its global ambitions.
