    Jörn Krieger | 05-08-2013

The company also sees business potential for turnkey solutions in the rental business, for example solutions required for major events and sports coverage.

Time Warner Cable pulls plug on CBS content
    Editor | 05-08-2013

Despite a warning as to what may happen if the issue isn't settled, the Time Warner Cable(TWC)/CBS retrans row has descended into what the latter's CEO Les Moonves has called "a war", with screens now blacked out.
Only days ago and as the two sides were sitting down to hammer out a deal, TWC had temporarily removed CBS content from its service offerings as the two sides failed to come to an agreement in a battle centred on a new fee structure for content. TWC insists that the fees CBS is looking for are unprecedented, unreasonable and unacceptable, while the content company described its new tariff as "fair compensation".
Once TWC restored the service on 30 July it was hoped that a deal was in the offing, but the two sides seem further away than ever. The bottom line is that TWC's current contract with CBS Television has now expired and has not been renewed.
Heaping blame on CBS for the failure to strike a deal, TWC CEO Glenn Britt commented: "Despite our continued efforts to reach agreement, CBS has been uncompromising – making demands that are completely inconsistent with the agreements we've reached with hundreds of other broadcasters. As a result ... we are no longer authorised to carry the CBS-owned broadcast affiliates, such as KCBS Los Angeles, WCBS New York, and KTVT Dallas, as well as other CBS-owned cable networks, such as Showtime, TMC, Flix, Smithsonian and CBS Primetime on Demand programming. We regret that CBS has put Time Warner Cable and, most importantly, our customers in this position."
Attempting to ratchet up the PR campaign against CBS by appealing to viewers, Britt added that the "skyrocketing" price of programming had a direct impact on customers' monthly cable bill. "If we paid CBS what they are asking, the next broadcaster or programmer would ask us – and others like FiOS, AT&T and DirecTV – for even higher prices next time. Cable TV bills would skyrocket. You'd be mad. We'd be mad. It won't end well for anyone. So, we have to take a tough stand in these negotiations and fight to hold down the price we all end up paying for programming and to carry on reasonable and customary terms ... the only people CBS is hurting are our viewers who love their shows."
Even as Britt appealed to CBS to return to the negotiating table and agree to a contract that is in the best interest of all parties, rival operators offered their support for TWC in its stance. Leading satellite provider DirecTV applauded TWC, accusing CBS of "punishing" viewers.
In a statement published by TWC, it said: "All pay-TV customers are feeling trapped and helpless as broadcasters expect them to absorb ridiculous rate increases for the exact same programming. In trying to protect our own customers, DirecTV has certainly had its share of these battles, so we applaud Time Warner Cable for fighting back against exorbitant programming cost increases. We are also appalled to learn that CBS is now punishing DirecTV customers, who may happen to have Time Warner as their Internet provider, by denying them access to CBS content online. The conduct of content companies in their efforts to extract outrageous fees from distributors and consumers may have reached a new low."

Mediaset Premium expands sports bouquet with Eurosport
    Editor | 05-08-2013

Even though Silvio Berlusconi has not had a week to remember on the legal front, his Mediaset pay-TV business is rolling on by enhancing its sports offering.
The leading Italian pay-TV provider has inked a deal with Eurosport Group for the distribution of the latter's two principal channels in the Mediaset Premium pack for its domestic market.
The sports channel will broadcast live action, in Italian, of leading national and international sports events including tennis tournaments, the great cycling tours and classic races, winter sports, motorsports, athletics and swimming. Subscribers will also be able to see team sports such as basketball, handball, hockey and new emerging sports.
Eurosport and Eurosport 2 will be available in SD without any added costs in the Premium offer in autumn 2013.
The service is designed to complement and not cannibalise Mediaset's other sports bouquets, especially football. Mediaset Premium pack offers all matches of the main European Football Championships live from 17 August. These include Premier League and English FA Cup football, La Liga from Spain and the French Ligue 1.

Indigo scores with Oz factual content sales
    Editor | 05-08-2013

Foxtel and SBS are among a number of Australian broadcasters who have licensed factual content from London-based distributor Indigo Film and Television.
Formed in 1998, Indigo Film and Television has made its reputation developing an international distribution and co-production business of films, drama series, documentaries, entertainment series and children's programming.
In the first of the deals, Foxtel picked up the factual entertainment series Secret Museums (12 x 30'). Described by Time Out Magazine as an "engaging tribute to some genuine London oddities," the series follows Professor Ronald Hutton on an exploration of the curious and the bizarre objects within Britain's 'secret' museums.
For its part, SBS, Australia has bought both Literary Landscapes (6 x 30') and Portrait of a City (6 x 30'). The former takes viewers on a tour of the locations that inspired and informed some of our legendary authors, while Portrait of a City guides viewers through the secrets of the past, delights of the present and hopes for the future of six of Europe's most beautiful locations.
Commenting on the deals, Robert Basset, Indigo Film and Television's sales manager, said: "I am happy to have closed these deals and look forward to continuing to develop our relationship with Australian broadcasters."

    August 6, 2013 09.30 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Cyfrowy Polsat NewGoogle has acceded to a request from Cyfrowy Polsat to block weeb.tv, which illegally distributes the Polish company’s channels in real time on the internet.
In a statement, Cyfrowy Polsat says the action has been taken in accordance with the US’s Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
On entering a search for a channel such as JimJam Polsat, Polsat Film and Polsat Crime & Investigation, the following message appears on either the first or subsequent pages:
In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DCMA complaint that caused the removal(s) at ChillingEffects.org.
Google goes on to say that (weeb.tv) distributes TV channels, among those owned by Cyfrowy Polsat, without permission.

Innovation and content behind Sky-D performance
    August 6, 2013 09.24 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Sky DeutschlandSky Deutschland CEO Brian Sullivan says the paycaster’s strong second quarter can be attributed to a combination of a great sports offering and product innovation.
Net customer growth of 47,900 was fractionally ahead of 2012, bringing the subscriber base to 3,453,000. Quarterly annualised churn improved to 9.7% from 9.9%, though the 12-month rolling churn rate rose to 12% from 11.5% in Q2 2012.
The company said the results came against the background of the outbound telesales channel at the beginning of this year, which was put in place to improve subscriber and revenue growth.
Brian Sullivan, CEO of Sky Deutschland: “We had a great second quarter with continued strong operational and financial performance highlighted by a positive quarterly and half-year EBITDA. With Bundesliga exclusivity, an unrivalled sport offering, great new channels, innovative products and a significantly expanded distribution position, we have set the stage for the second half of this year and beyond.”
Revenues in Q2 2013 grew by 15% to €375.4 million from €326.7 million in the corresponding quarter. Subscription revenues were the key driver with an ARPU increase of €1.58 to €33.74.
Sky HD continues to grow with an additional 83,600 subscribers added in the quarter to reach 1,697,000. Close to half of Sky-D’s customers now take the premium HD service, following the recent additions of Sport1 US, Syfy HD, 13th Street and E! Entertainment.
The Sky+ PVR also continues to add new homes. 1,170,600 now take the service, 393,000 subscribers have a second smart card.
Sky Go recorded almost 16.7 million customer logins, a considerable increase on the 6.9 million in Q2 2012, with episodes of the first three seasons of the HBO series Game of Thrones being streamed over one million times since April 2013 alone.
The 50th anniversary Bundesliga season provided a major boost to viewer numbers for Sky’s coverage. At its peak the market share of the Bundesliga Conference on Saturday, as measured by the AGF, hit 26.2% among male viewers between 14 and 49 years.

Liberty Global plans Horizon in the cloud
    August 6, 2013 08.54 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Horizon TV multiscreenLiberty Global is preparing to take its Horizon platform into the cloud following a successful demo in London.
Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries broke the news on Friday during an investor call, “Last week we had a demo in our office in London of a cloud based version of Horizon. We will have a ready-to-launch cloud-based version of the user interface which will make future releases simpler and that will reduce the costs of the box, I am really pleased with this development, ” he said.
During the call Fries also downplayed the problems with the Horizon set-top in the Netherlands and Switzerland. “Customers complain about everything, that is normal with a new product. Some want it faster, some want it green, some want it blue.”
“As with any innovative product in the market place you have bumps in the road. We just had a new code drop in both Switzerland and Holland that has dramatically improved pretty much every customer complaint,” according to Fries. “Most of the feedback we listened to we have been able to sort it though with this new code drop. Faster in terms of the cool User interface, simplify some of the menu options.”
The operator also launched a new remote that has a keyboard on the back. “Lots of the things we planned are rapidly introduced. Every quarter we will be improving our Horizon product and every market we are launching along the road we will have a better Horizon product.”
The versions to be launched in Germany (planned for September) and Ireland will be based on the learnings of both Switzerland and The Netherlands.

    Pay-TV takes off in Moscow
    August 6, 2013 08.33 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

russia-flagThe number of pay-TV subscribers in Moscow exceeded the number of homes by 700,000 in the first half of this year.
What was more, according to Vedomosti, more than one million homes received services from two or more pay-TV operators.
One reason for these surprising figures is that the fee for receiving services from Rostelecom, which with 3.26 million TV subscribers is the city’s largest cable operator, is included in the rent.
As a result, customers do not break their contracts by also choosing to receive services from another pay-TV company.
IPTV is also becoming increasingly popular, with up to 20% of broadband subscribers opting for services in some area.
The total pay-TV penetration in Moscow now stands at over 11%, while broadband penetrations is only 84%, according to data from iKS Consulting.
