HomePNA says yes to multi-room PVR
    Editor | 31-07-2013

Israeli satellite television provider yes has adopted HomePNA home networking technology to power its yes.Multiroom whole-home digital video recorder (DVR) offering.
HomePNA technology is based on an open ITU-T standard (G.9954) and is included in the DLNA Interoperability Guidelines. The organisation adds that to date over 40 million certified HomePNA Products have been shipped to telco, satellite and cable service providers of all sizes worldwide, supplying critical components of their IP-based service deployments.
The new service will allow yes customers to view a film recorded on a yesMax Total DVR in any room of the house. They can start watching a film in one room, pause it and continue watching in another. Along with yes.Multiroom, yes has introduced a new user interface incorporating a "personal viewing recommendation engine."
"yes is a technology-driven company that strives to offer its customers leading edge products that enhance their viewing experience," explained Itzhak Elyakim, vice president of engineering and CTO of yes. "We have depended on HomePNA home networking technology over the last two years for our successful video-on-demand (VOD) service deployments. The success of that experience made HomePNA the obvious choice for our new yes.Multiroom, providing a reliable high speed backbone to distribute DVR service throughout our customers' homes."
"Since its founding, yes satellite has led the market in introducing services that leverage enabling technologies, like HomePNA, to deliver a great experience and services to its customers," added Eran Gureshnik, former president of the HomePNA Alliance and special HomePNA advisor to the HomeGrid Board. "We are very pleased that yes continues to depend on HomePNA technology for its latest and most demanding products and services."

SMPTE gets Emmy for HD-SDI standard
    July 31, 2013 14.05 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) will be presented with an Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering for 2013 by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The honour is being conferred upon SMPTE in recognition of the society’s work on development, standardisation, and productisation of the High-Definition Serial Digital Interface (HD-SDI) standard.
“For an organization such as ours, the Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering is not only a tremendous honor, but also confirmation that we’re successfully carrying out our mission as the leading technical society for the motion-imaging industry,” said SMPTE executive director Barbara Lange.
“We’re very proud of the work our members have done in advancing the HD-SDI standard, as well as the value that the standard itself brings to the field.”
This Technology and Engineering Emmy Award recognises the work behind the SMPTE 292 standard for high-definition digital video transmission. The SMPTE 292 standard is the foundation for the family of serial digital interface (SDI) standards for transmitting uncompressed HD video signals. The SMPTE 292 standard has proven to be robust and versatile, and a large number of additional standards have been created based on SMPTE’s original work.
The derivative standards address higher data-rate versions and the use of multiple interfaces for advanced applications such as D-Cinema connectivity. These derivative standards have also provided for packaging and identification of many additional signal types, making the HD-SDI standard the workhorse of high-speed synchronous communication. The HD-SDI interface standard is one of more than 650 engineering documents that have been published by SMPTE.
The Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards will be presented Januanry 9, 2014, in conjunction with the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Sky and Microsoft reach trademark settlement
    July 31, 2013 15.06 Europe/London By Julian Clover

sky-vanBSkyB and Microsoft have reached a settlement over the use of the ‘Sky’ mark in Microsoft’s Sky Drive product.
In June, High Court Judge Mrs Justice Asplin issued a judgment holding that Microsoft’s use of the name SkyDrive infringed Sky’s rights in the ‘Sky’ mark.
Under the settlement, Microsoft will not pursue its planned appeal of this decision and Sky will allow Microsoft to continue using the SkyDrive name for a reasonable period of time to allow for an orderly transition to a new brand.
The terms of the agreement also indicates a financial settlement, the details of which have not been released.
“We are pleased to have reached a settlement after Microsoft agreed not to appeal the trade mark infringement judgment in relation to its SkyDrive service,” said Sky. “We will remain vigilant in protecting the Sky brand and will continue to take appropriate action against those companies who seek to use our trade mark without consent.”
Microsoft said, “We’re glad to have resolution of this naming dispute, and will continue to deliver the great service our hundreds of millions of customers expect, providing the best way to always have your files with you.”
Sky has held a series of trademarks incorporating the mark ‘Sky’ across channels and services. Between 2008 and 2011 it ran its own cloud-based storage service ‘Sky Store & Share’, which was discontinued in December 2011.

RTL big winner in Croatian DTT tender
    July 31, 2013 17.47 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

CroatiaFlagThe Croatian Agency for Electronic Media (AEM) has announced the winners of concessions to provide TV services on two of the country’s DTT multiplexes.
At the same time, it has annulled a tender for a third multiplex.
According to the regulator, it received only one offer for Multiplex A and the bidder RTL Hrvatska was deemed suitable for a licence to provider TV services for a period of 15 years.
RTL Hrvatska was also successful in securing a 15-year licence to operate a kids channel named RTL Kockica on Multiplex D, beating off a rival bid from Nova TV/Nova Pro.
At the same time, Varazdinska TV was the sole bidder and winner of a licence for the Digital region D3.
The AEM received four bids for Multiplex B – from Nova TV, Antenna Televizija, Nazavisna televizija and Televizija Pet – but decided to cancel the tender on the grounds that in its view that none would contribute significantly to the pluralism of media in Croatia.
Companies will have to take this more into account when submitting bids when a new tender is held for Multiplex B.

Eutelsat 25B prepares for August 29 launch
August 1, 2013 07.26 Europe/London By Broadband TV News Correspondent

Pre-launch checkout is now underway at the Spaceport with Eutelsat 25B/Es’hail 1, which is one of two satellite passengers to be orbited on Arianespace’s fourth heavy-lift Ariane 5 mission of 2013.
Following its arrival in French Guiana by cargo aircraft last weekend, the spacecraft emerged from its protective shipping container inside the Spaceport’s S5 payload preparation facility to begin processing for a targeted August 29 launch.
This satellite – built by U.S.-based Space Systems/Loral (SSL) – will secure Ku-band continuity for European telecommunications operator Eutelsat and additional Ku-band resources for Es’hailSat, the Qatar Satellite Company, as well as initiate Ka-band capability to open business opportunities for the two operators.
In serving both Eutelsat and Es’hailSat, the relay platform will help respond to the demand for the fastest-growing applications in the Middle East and North Africa – including video broadcasting, enterprise
    communications and government services.
Based on SSL’s 1300 platform, Eutelsat 25B/Es’hail 1 has four steerable spot beam antennas and four deployable reflectors, along with advanced command and telemetry capabilities, and is designed for a service life of 15 years or more.
Eutelsat 25B/Es’hail 1 will be in the upper position of the payload “stack” for August’s dual-passenger Ariane 5 launch, joined by India’s GSAT-7 telecommunications satellite in the lower slot. G-SAT 7 was developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation and carries relay payloads in UHF, S-band, C-band and Ku-band.
