Starz makes early renewal of original series
    Editor | 29-07-2013

With Netflix’s EMMY-award nominations showing the power of such content, Starz has revealed that it is to pick up a second season of the original content series, Black Sails.
The programme is executive produced by Transformers, Armageddon, Pearl Harbour director/producer Michael Bay and partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, and has ben re-signed by the global media and entertainment company even before its first season premiere.
“Michael Bay, Jon Steinberg and their teams delivered a spectacular first season of Black Sails, and we are incredibly proud of everyone’s work,” commented Starz CEO Chris Albrecht. “Based on the strong fan response to the preview screening at last week’s Comic-Con, we felt an early order for a second season would allow the writers, cast and crew enough time and space to continue crafting such unique and epic storytelling.”
Creator and executive producer, Jon Steinberg, added:"We are thrilled to be receiving such an exciting vote of confidence from everyone at Starz and for the opportunity to carry the Black Sails adventure into Season Two without missing a beat. We couldn't ask for better partners in bringing our pirate world to life."
"We've had a fantastic experience working with Chris Albrecht and Jon Steinberg," said Bay. "Brad, Andrew and I look forward to continuing our partnership with Starz on future episodes for this extraordinary show."

Spain's TV market experiences growth in 2013
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 29-07-2013

The first half of the year has seen a growth in profit for the Spanish audiovisual groups Atresmedia and Mediaset, with nearly €30 million net profit, the first increase seen since 2010.
The two TV groups share almost 90% of the TV advertisement market and have been carrying out strong saving policies.
Atresmedia closed the first half of 2013 with €29.1 million profit, over 60% more than the same period in 2012. It's the group's first financial report to show strong results since Antena 3 and La Sexta merged.
According to the group, even though advertising income has fallen (over 12% in the first six months), share increases and the growth of La Sexta have consolidated Atresmedia's financial situation.
But the merging has also meant an increase in debt. Over €20 million more since 2012 places the current debt at €152 million.
Atresmedia gathered 43% in publicity investment, according to Infoadex, and has also seen an increase in its audience. Antena 3 got a 13% share average, while La Sexta had 6% and the five complementary DTT channels had over 9%.
With regard to Mediaset, its profits grew to €30.1 million. The group, thanks in no small part to Telecinco, has retained a leading position in Spain's TV market and received 44% in advertisement investment.
Mediaset has been able to decrease its operational costs by 14%, making them €65 million lower than in 2012.
Despite having difficulties in increasing Cuatro's audience, Mediaset keeps leading Spain's schedule due to Telecinco and its 13.5% average share. The group's Internet presence is also strong, Telecinco being the most visited TV site in Spain and having a great impact in social networks – with, for instance, nearly 70% of TV-related comments on Twitter, according to Tuitele.

LCD panel glut exposes weak increase in Q3 TV demand
    Joseph O'Halloran | 29-07-2013

By rights, sales of essential equipment for TV should currently be rising sharply, however research from IHS has revealed the opposite.
According to the rather self-explanatory report Oversupply to Continue Due to Weak Economy, the information and analytics provider found that suppliers of large-sized liquid-crystal (LCD) panels instead are encountering weak demand growth in the third quarter, exacerbating a glut already plaguing the market.
Measured in terms of square metres, IHS expects supply of large-sized LCD panels to exceed demand by 15.9% during the period July to September, 2013. This would represent three percentage points more than a previous forecast of a 13.2% oversupply. Even though this glut will decline compared with the second quarter of the year — the normal during the pre-holiday season — IHS regards it as running at elevated levels.
Looking at the third quarter, IHS predicts global large-sized LCD panel demand in terms of square meters is expected to rise by just 6% compared with Q2. A year earlier this growth ran at more than 10%.
“This is the time of the year when LCD panel-makers usually are ramping up production to meet holiday demand for televisions, notebook PCs, tablets and other consumer-oriented electronics,” explained Ricky Park, senior manager for large-area displays at IHS. “However, the display industry is confronting the prospect of weak sales growth and a lack of visibility into future demand trends. With a combination of flagging economic conditions and the end of a popular television incentive plan in China, large-sized LCD panel supply is expected to overshoot demand by a higher margin than previously predicted.”

    SES-6 is fully operational
    July 30, 2013 08.09 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The SES-6 satellite has successfully completed its extensive in-orbit testing and is now fully operational and in commercial service at the orbital position of 40.5 degrees West.
The 53rd SES satellite was successfully launched on board an ILS Proton booster from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, on June 4, 2013.
SES-6 was built by EADS Astrium in Toulouse, France, based on the Eurostar E3000 platform. The satellite is equipped with 43 C-band and 48 Ku-band transponders.
SES-6 had a launch mass of 6,100 kg, features a wingspan of 40m with its solar arrays deployed in orbit, and is designed for 13 kW of spacecraft power at the end of its 15-year design lifetime. The satellite has comprehensive coverage of North America, Latin America, Europe and the Atlantic Ocean.
SES-6 replaces SES’ NSS-806 satellite at the prime orbital position of 40.5 degrees West, providing continuity of service and expansion capacity in the C-band for video neighbourhoods in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The largest Ku-band customer on SES-6 is Brazilian telecommunication group Oi. As a new anchor customer, Oi signed a significant long-term capacity agreement to provide Direct-to-Home (DTH) services in Brazil.

Through this agreement, Sky secures exclusive pay TV and S-VOD rights for Sky Anytime and Sky Go to MGM’s latest films. In addition, the companies have announced a long-term exclusive carriage renewal agreement for the MGM HD Channel on the Sky platform in Germany and Austria. This deal furthers the relationship between the companies, who announced earlier this year the launch of the MGM HD Channel. Media servers working for Pace
    July 30, 2013 08.37 Europe/London By Julian Clover

pace-newIncreasing demand for new media server products has helped Pace increase revenues by 31% with US product continuing to dominate.
The Saltaire-based company has seen a 51.8% increase in set-top box and media server revenue, principally attributed to sustained high demand for its media servers. However, revenue from Gateway products fell by 23% as one of its major customers began dual sourcing.
“We continue to make good headway on executing our strategy; key wins of both integrated Pace solutions and next generation hardware with major customers along with ongoing operational improvements give management confidence that we will make further progress in the second half of 2013 and beyond,” said Pace CEO Mike Pulli.
Revenues from North America accounted for $839 million in the first half of 2013, compared to $517.60 in the first half of 2012. However, European revenues fell to $158.8 million from $189.5 million.
In total revenues of $1,318.4 million compared favorably with the $1,006.50 of the prior year.
Pace blames the increase on the reduced win rate of new products in 2011 and points out it has achieved a number of key wins among new and existing customers that it anticipates will result in additional revenues from 2014.
The wins include the media server delivery to Norway’s Get and, significantly, the supply of media servers to Liberty Global in a number of unspecified markets.
