    Astra's HD+ growth slows
    Jörn Krieger | 25-07-2013

Astra satellite operator SES won considerably fewer paying customers for its German HDTV platform HD+ in Q2 2013 than in the same period last year: 89,183 new customers paid the €50 fee enabling them to receive commercial channels like RTL, Sat.1 and ProSieben in HD on Astra (19.2° East).
In Q2 2013, HD+ recorded more than 120,000 new paying customers. The strong growth is also based on the fact that for the first time the figure includes Sky subscribers who are paying for HD+. In total, the platform now has 1.19 million paying subscribers. 1.49 million households are still in the 12-month free-of-charge period. Including the paying customers, HD+ now reaches 2.68 million households.
"We are very satisfied with the development so far," Wilfried Urner, CEO of HD+, said in Munich. "HD+ will exceed its original year-end target of 25% growth. We now expect to reach at least 1.25 million paying customers at the end of 2013."
HD+ currently offers 15 commercial free-to-air channels in HDTV for a fee of €50 per year. The first 12 months are free of charge. The same channels can be received unencrypted and for free in standard definition on Astra.

Digital TV sales force Peru to advance switch-off date
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 26-07-2013

Peru won't switch off its analogue TV system until 2020. The cities of Lima and Callao will be first to switch, with the rest of the country changing to digital between 2022 and 2024.
These deadlines are actually an improvement on earlier estimates, as the switch-off had been expected to take place later. However, the high digital TV sales experienced in the country are forcing the Government to accelerate the transition process.
According to El Comercio, Raúl Pérez-Reyes, Communications Minister, didn't offer any official data about ISDB-T decoder sales, but research is being carried out to determine whether or not it might be better to set an even earlier switch-off date.
Peru's economy is growing fast, pushed by the great growth of its neighbours. For instance, Samsung estimates that digital TV and decoders sales will increase 20% this year, the same percentage as in 2012.
Most Peruvian channels are already testing DTT and HD broadcasts, but some technological changes need to be made as well as new market rules established.

OTT, multiscreen surge drives uptick in adaptive bitrate gear and transcoders
    Joseph O'Halloran | 26-07-2013

In what may be the equivalent of the Klondike shovel makers’ success, there is now tangible evidence of steady investment in the platforms necessary to optimise the burgeoning over the top and TV everywhere services.
A new study from Infonetics Research, Broadcast and Streaming Video Equipment and Pay TV Subscribers, has shown that global broadcast and streaming video equipment market exceeded $2 billion in 2012 and is set to grow about 12% in 2013.
In this booming streaming video industry, Infonetics regards adaptive bitrate (ABR) origin and packaging servers are key components in the efficient delivery of OTT content, especially as more pay-TV providers and content delivery networks move towards using the technology to deliver such streams efficiently.
Additionally the analyst noted that increasing amounts of transcoders are being used to prepare linear broadcast and file-based content for distribution directly to subscribers.
"With competition and content heating up, pay-TV providers are transitioning their traditional, broadcast-focused video processing environments to ones that can ingest, process, deliver, and decode video content from multiple sources," commented Jeff Heynen, principal analyst for broadband access and pay-TV at Infonetics Research. "At the same time, content owners and studios are also adjusting their workflow and video output to support multiscreen and streaming services."
As a result Infonetics predicts 33% growth for ABR in the period to 2017. Looking as to where the most profitable markets may be, the analyst also predicted that between 2012-2017 telco IPTV subscribers will likely have the highest CAGR (17%). of any pay-TV subscriber segment.

Alphasat and INSAT-3D hit into orbit

    2013-07-25

According to the plan July 25 Ariane 5 rocket was to orbit two satellites: Alphasat and INSAT-3D. The first will go to position 25 ° E and will be used for mobile communication services operator Inmarsat, and the second on 82 ° E and is a meteorological satellite Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It was the third Ariane 5 start this year, a total of 70 Ariane 5 and 56 in a row mission accomplished.

Ariane 5 was launched on July 25 at 21:53 Polish time, ie at the beginning of the start window of the third complex (ELA-3) in Kourou, French Guiana.

Cargo into orbit hit a total weight of 9760 kg, of which 8770 kg is the satellite, while the rest of the module SYLDA and components responsible for the integration of satellite carrier rocket.

As the first after 27 minutes and 45 seconds into the flight of a rocket disconnected satellite Alphasat, a little over four minutes later was separated Insat-3D. The mission ended after 44 minutes, and 53 seconds after launch.

Ariane 5 with satellites Alphasat and INSAT-3D in a few seconds after the start

Alphasat is Europe's largest telecommunications satellite ever built. The project is the result of collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA), and the operator Inmarsat under the ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems). Satellite is configured to operate in L-band transmission for mobile communication services. This will serve to expand the capabilities of the Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Alphasat was built by Astrium on the basis of a specially developed IT platform Alphabus. The orbit is to spend no less than 15 years. Slated to position 25 ° E.

The second "passenger" Ariane 5 will be the Indian meteorological satellite INSAT-3D. It was built by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the unit of ISRO Space Applications Centre based platform for one-2Kbus. The orbit is to spend no less than seven years. Slated to position 82 ° E. This will allow to carry out meteorological observations and monitoring the earth's surface and oceans. In addition, provide assistance during rescue operations of "search and rescue".

The broadcast of the launch can be viewed at ARIANESPACE.TV, which was recently expanded to include access to high-quality transmission and playback of full screen to improve viewing comfort viewers. In addition, holders interested in the iPad and iPhone applications through Arianespace, which is available free of charge from iTune store.

His next start will be in the Ariane 5 - on August 29 is expected launching another two satellites. The first of these will Eutelsat 25B/Es' hail-1 - a collaboration between operators Es'hailSat and Eutelsat. It will position 25.5 degrees East, replacing Eutelsat 25A. It will be equipped with 24 Ku-band transponders and 14 Ka-band. The second is the GSAT-7, again for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which will go to position 74 ° E.

Atresmedia's on-demand Nubeox to launch new subscription services
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 26-07-2013

Spain's Atresmedia wants to reinforce its on-demand offer by changing Nubeox, the VOD platform that it shares with Grupo Planeta.

According to TV Zone, the holding company of Antena 3 and La Sexta will change the platform to offer a subscription service like other VOD companies currently do.

There are no details regarding prices or content yet, but the company wants to focus on online video services, a sector in which most of the audiovisual companies are already competing.

Nubeox was launched over a year ago, aiming to offer a digital alternative to the TV market. Working more like a traditional video store, it offers the possibility of renting movies or series on-demand and watching them on computers, mobile devices and Samsung Smart TVs.

Now, Nubeox is thinking about combining the original system with a subscription service. The service will probably be launched in Q4 2013 and the platform will be designed for more makes of smart TV. The idea is to compete at the same level with Filmin, TotalChannel and the recently launched Magine, as well as other online platforms such as Mediapro's Mitele.

Cable & Wireless to invest over $50MN in Panama to fulfil data demand
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 26-07-2013

Cable & Wireless Panama is investing over $50 million in a project to renovate the country's data network.

During past year, the demand for data services increased by nearly 100%, so the network needs to increase its capacity.

The company will start investing the money in the Colón and capital provinces, where the new infrastructure will be installed by the end of the month. The budget for the rest of the project has not yet been announced.

Mobile data consumption has been steadily increasing in Panama over the last few years, pushed by video and audio services. Cable & Wireless' clients have also increased the demand for data during the last 12 months.

Cable & Wireless is the biggest operator in Panama and has wide mobile coverage. Over 2.5 million users will be affected by the works, which could eventually affect the quality of the service.

The company offers broadband, pay-TV, hosting and telephone throughout the country.

Spanish market comes top for Telefónica sales
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 26-07-2013

Telefónica's profit fell 0.9% in the first half of 2013, during which time the company reported a net balance of €2,056 million.
The entire business is worth over €28,500 million, representing a 7.8% drop in the reported growth. However, Telefónica insists that the results are similar those expected.
The Latin American markets have lost their leading position in Telefónica's business and have been taken over by Spanish business. In Spain, Telefónica achieved sales of over €6,500 million, still a 15% drop, while Brazil, which was until now the company's motor, invoiced €6,400 million.
For the whole Latin American region, Telefónica's income fell 1.9% to €14,600 million. In Europe, the telco invoiced €13,390 million, an 11.2% drop during first half of 2013.
The company cites the wide customer base it has all over the world as being one of its strengths - Telefónica increased its subscriber base by 1.8% and currently has over 317 million accesses in the world.
Regarding debt, the company keeps reducing this by restructuring its markets. The telco currently has a net debt of nearly €49,800 million, €1,400 million less than six months ago.
Telefónica recently sold 40% of assets in Central America and its whole Irish subsidiary. It has also announced the purchase of E-Plus, KPN's mobile business in Germany, through which it has taken a leading position in that country. Thanks to these financial movements, among others, the company has decreased its debt by nearly €10,000 million during the last year.
