NTV Plus piracy loses by 64 million rubles / month

    2013-07-24

Sergei Groznow, head of information technology management in the Russian platform NTV-Plus, specified the illegal access to satellite programs in Russia for two million connections. Due to the pirates lose no less than 64 million rubles a month. We look forward to closing the pirate sites by Roskomnadzor, he said.

Mass use of the Russian population of illegal access to the channel is not no secret. The most popular card sharing service costs 2 to $ 4 a month for almost a full package of TV channels. Instead of using a legitimate keys placed in the access card, users get the keys from special server on the Internet.

Earlier estimates of the pirate collection were not conducted. According to research company IKS-Consulting, the exact magnitude of the problem can be known only through direct surveys conducted among residents in different regions of the country, but Sergei Groznow has its own method.

Our assessment is based on an analysis of the activity and the number of queries on well-known sites, dealing with card sharing. With great attention to look at the pirate forums. According to our estimates, the illegal access to satellite uses about 2 million users. Even if you count the illegal connection is not 2 million and 1.5 million, and we assume that the services of NTV-Plus would benefit 5% of these users, it is the current average monthly revenue per user in the amount of 860 rubles, the amount of look impressive - 64.5 million rubles of losses every month, said Sergei Groznow.

According to IKS-Consulting, in Russia today is recorded 11.9 million active subscribers TV. The leader in the number of subscribers is a platform Tricolor TV (8.79 million customers). The NTV-Plus connected is about 650 thousand. subscribers, but due to the higher average revenue per customer, NTV-Plus is one of the market leaders in monetary terms - 38% from 14.6 billion rubles (at the end of 2012, Tricolor TV - 44%).

NTV-Plus is trying to fight the pirates. In 2012, we were founded 14 criminal cases and made six convictions. Since the beginning of 2013 - five cases and two convictions. These results are, however, a drop in the ocean, said Sergei Groznow.

    Google unveils connected TV dongle
    July 25, 2013 08.25 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Google ChromecastWATCH VIDEO. Google has introduced Chromecast, a HDMI dongle that makes any TV connected to the internet.
The small device fits in the back of any TV set that has a HDMI port and connects wirelessly to online streaming services such as YouTube, Netflix and others. A mobile device serves as a remote control.
The dongle sells for $35 (EUR26) in the Google Play store, but US reports suggests that supplies ran out just after the announcement of Chromecast. The set will also become available on other outlets such as Amazon and via Best Buy shops.
Broadband TV Views. Devices such as Chromecast have been around now for some time, most of them using Android with a separate keyboard remote to access web-delivered streaming video services.
So far, impact of these simple devices has been very limited and did not pose a serious threat to stand-alone boxes such as Apple TV, Roku or connected game consoles such as Microsoft’s Xbox.
The question now is – will Google be able to jump-start connected TV by launching the new device. pricing at $35 is very competitive – so far such dongles were sold for around EUR100.
The introduction of Chromecast also begs the question whether Google has now given up on its original Google TV idea, which required hardware manufacturers to incorporate the Google TV software into their TV sets.
It looks like most CE manufacturers were not very keen on introducing Google TV alongside (or in place of) their own smart TV portals.

Revenues fall yet global STB demand remains healthy
    Joseph O'Halloran | 25-07-2013

Demand for set-top box products remains healthy, with worldwide on track to exceed 230 million by the end of 2013, according to new research from the Multimedia Research Group.
In terms of the demand for the products, the research found that growing demand for set-top box products in emerging markets, particularly for cable and satellite STB products in countries such as China and India, is sustaining unit shipment growth. At the heart of this is the digitisation programmes being undertaken in both countries, the first and second largest cable TV markets in the world.
Overall, MRG calculates that worldwide digital cable set-top box unit shipments increased by 10% in 2012 and are expected to continue to increase modestly in 2013. This market is led by Motorola (now part of ARRIS) who shipped more than 11 million units in 2012. Worldwide, satellite STBs unit shipments reached nearly 109 million in 2012, up from about 100 million in 2011. For 2013, MRG is projecting that satellite set-top box unit shipments will continue to rise slightly and long-term demand for satellite set-top boxes is expected.
Yet despite all of this, MRG say that the underlying dynamic is that STB revenues will continue to get squeezed. The analyst predicts that product revenues will decrease again in 2013 to approximately $19 billion, as pricing pressure on set-top boxes increases. Moreover it forecasts that over the next few years, global revenues will drop to $17.9 billion in 2015.

TV gives BT welcome kick as half a million sign up for BT Sport
    Joseph O'Halloran | 25-07-2013

Even though it is still to launch, BT is already getting a return on the significant investment the UK incumbent telco has made in the BT Sport division.
According to it latest financial results, for the first quarter of the year ended 30 June, BT generated revenues of £4.5 billion, down 1% year-on-year, driving an adjusted net profit before tax of £595 million.
Yet underneath this, it was clear just as to how important the TV division has become to BT, spending around £40 million in pre-launch costs for BT Sport. Commenting on the results, BT CEO Ian Livingston made particular note of the forthcoming BT Sport service which he disclosed had notched up 500,000 orders already. He said: “BT continues to make good progress, delivering another quarter of solid growth in underlying profit before tax. This is despite the impact of regulation and the significant investments we are making for the future. It is early days but we are very pleased with the strong start in BT Sport.”
BT also revealed that most of the new BT Sport subs were existing customers who had re-contracted their broadband service to receive the new service free of charge. It expects the proportion of new customers to increase after the official BT Sport launch on 1 August.
Despite the optimism for BT Sport, the BT Retail division, in which TV services sit, showed a 1% fall in consumer revenues. A 5% decline in calls and lines revenue was partially offset by 9% growth in broadband and TV revenue. In the quarter, BT made 23,000 net additions in its overall IPTV offering taking the customer base to 833,000.
Looking at the near-term future, BT asserted that the first quarter results positioned it well for the full year, for which its outlook is unchanged. It warned investors that EBITDA in the first half of the year will be impacted by its upfront investment in BT Sport and expects that this will lead to a second quarter hit of around £100 million including programme content costs which it will start to recognise.
