Freesat maintains growth against pay-TV rivals
    July 24, 2013 08.12 Europe/London By Julian Clover

freesat-logoFreesat’s installed base grew by 145,000 homes in the last 12 months as the satellite service continued to outpace its pay-TV rivals.
The 15% increase comes against the background of a strong first 12 months for YouView – which with the involvement of BT and TalkTalk arguably sits on the fence between free and pay – and continued success for Freesat.
“Our continued strong results show thousands of people making the smart choice of Freesat as the alternative to expensive TV contracts,” commented Freesat managing director Emma Scott. “As take up across the UK has increased, so has our offer. We continue to add new channels and on demand services and invest in cutting edge technology. We will soon deliver more features to our next generation service, including the addition of Demand 5, a remote app for smart phones, and in the future, additional movie and music channels.”
Freesat has sold 3.3 million set-tops since its launch in 2008 and is currently in 1.8 million homes.
BSkyB, which will report Thursday, remains the leader in the satellite market with in excess of 10 million homes.

Revs inch up but steady profit rise for Telenor TV business
    Editor | 24-07-2013

The TV and video business of Scandinavian communications giant Telenor has shown steady gains overall in the second quarter of 2013.
As an overall corporate entity, the Telenor Group reported revenues of NOK25.7 billion, representing an organic revenue growth of 2%. EBITDA before other items was NOK8.86 billion, EBITDA margin was 34%, and operating cash flow was NOK5.37 billion.
For its broadcasting business — including the Norkring, Conax and Canal Digital businesses — growth was a little less marked. The broadcast unit showed total revenue growth of 1%, mainly caused by increases in the aforementioned LOBs. Total EBITDA increased by 11% and the EBITDA margin by three percentage points.
The core Canal Digital DTH broadcast offering, which competes in a very competitive regional market now including over-the-top players such as Netflix Nordic, increased takings by a meagre 1% as higher average revenue per customer and currency effects were only partly offset by reduced hardware sales and effects of a lower DTH subscriber base which declined from 952,000 to 945,000. That said, the line's EBITDA margin was 18% and four percentage points higher due to reduced content and operating cost.
Revenues in all satellite broadcasting decreased by 1% mainly due to the phase-out of the Thor 2 satellite. EBITDA decreased by 4% due to higher operating costs.
Revenues in the Conax conditional access and security business, which celebrated a number of key wins in the quarter, increased by 14% due to more smart card sales. Conax's EBITDA remained stable as operating cost increased and more sales in low price markets resulted in declining average price and gross margin per card.

Despite middling fiscal Q3 results, iPhone sales record sends Apple shares up
    Michelle Clancy | 24-07-2013

Apple delighted investors with its fiscal 2013 third quarter results: the giant from Cupertino posted quarterly revenue of $35.3 billion, barely up from $35 billion year-over-year — but the company also set a quarterly record for iPhone sales, moving 31.2 million of the video-friendly smartphones, compared to 26 million in the year-ago quarter.
International sales accounted for 57% of the quarter's revenue.
The rest of the company's results were slightly down from one year ago: net profit slid almost 22% to $6.9 billion, or $7.47 per diluted share, from the $8.8 billion, or $9.32 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Apple also sold fewer iPads (14.6 million) during the quarter, down from 17 million last year. And, it sold 3.8 million Macs, compared to 4 million in the year-ago quarter.
Worse, gross margin was 36.9% compared to 42.8% in the year-ago quarter.
However, investors rewarded Apple for its iPhone sales, sending shares up 4%.
Apple's board of directors has also declared a cash dividend of $3.05 per share of the company's common stock. The dividend is payable on 15 August to shareholders of record as of the close of business on 12 August.
"We are especially proud of our record June quarter iPhone sales of over 31 million and the strong growth in revenue from iTunes, Software and Services," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014."
"We generated $7.8 billion in cash flow from operations during the quarter and are pleased to have returned $18.8 billion in cash to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO.
Apple provided the following guidance for its fiscal 2013 fourth quarter:
Revenue between $34 billion and $37 billion
Gross margin between 36% and 37%
Operating expenses between $3.9 billion and $3.95 billion
    Other income/(expense) of $200 million
    Tax rate of 26.5%

    Spain launches fibre consultation
    July 24, 2013 09.52 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Spanish regulator CMT has launched a consultation into the future regulation of the fibre-optic market in the country.
spain_glowIn it, it is seeking industry views on the regulation, which will be implemented on next generation networks (NGNs) in 2014-16.
Stakeholders have been given until September 18 to answer questions raised in the document.
These relate to – amongst others – access obligations; the possible revision of the 30 Mbps wholesale access provided by Telefónica; and the possibility of differentiating between residential and business markets.
The CMT says that the market has considerably changed since 2009, with deployment of NGNs having accelerated and there being (as of this May) over 13 million accesses installed, of which over 10% (1.33 million) were active.
Investment has also been boosted following agreements between Telefónica and Jazztel on the one hand and Orange and Vodafone on the other.

    Major landmark for Sky Italia
    July 24, 2013 10.19 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Sky Italia HeadquartersSky Italia has made a number of important announcements on the occasion of its 10th anniversary.
The first was that it would launch Sky TG24, the first Italian news channel to broadcast in HD, on September 24.
The second was the launch of Sky Loves Kids, a ‘walled garden’ option for its kids programming, and the third that it will start to carry Fox Sports HD from next month.
Others include the launch of a Moto-GP dedicated channel, the Fox Crime Investigation channel and making Classica, Sky Italia’as premium channel dedicated to classical music, opera and ballet, accessible to all subscribers and in HD.
Sky Italia also provided the following key statistics:
€10 billion invested since 2003. In the last fiscal year, Sky invested 1.08 billion in Italian audio-visual products (more than 100 million euro in the cinematographic sector and almost 150 million euro in original productions)
    4.78 million subscribers (at 31 March 2013)
6,500 employees + 13,000 people working with Sky
    180 channels – 57 in HD (61 in September) and 1 in 3D
55% of subscribers have a MySky decoder
More than 10% of Sky’s total audience comes from non-linear viewing
Increase of the shifted viewing of the main TV series (i.e. that of Grey’s Anatomy went from 26% in the 8th season to 35% in the 9th season, that of Game of Thrones went from 26% in the first season to 36% in the third season)

Speaking at the conference marking its 10th anniversary, Andrea Zappia, CEO of Sky Italia, said: “Italy will remain an interesting market for the media sector but we need to approach it in a different way… It should be let free to develop itself.
“The TV market has changed incredibly in the last 10 years… We are moving towards a single entertainment market in which you compete in order to capture people’s attention. In Italy, content is still sold on a platform basis, a useless thing.
Advertising: “Sky Pubblicita’ [Sky Italia's advertising arm] is outperforming the market, which is experiencing a double-digit decline, because it offers a valuable audience and it sells not only advertising spaces but also more innovative and complete products”.
