TV channel apps used by 14% of smartphone, tablet users
    July 20, 2013

The study found increasing consumer use of apps from TV channels and shows and reported a 75% satisfaction rate among those that did use TV content apps in the quarter.

The most common consumer activities with these apps were watching video, looking up information related to programs, and purchasing related music or merchandise, according to the TV Channel and Network App Users study. Viewers also used the apps to check broadcast dates and times.

The research found millennials to have “much higher” interest in programme and channel specific apps than older consumer segments, and said that shows aimed specifically at this audience – like Gossip Girl – were “wise to develop a robust app offering.”

“This ‘second-screen’ generation is accustomed to consuming content on multiple devices,” said John Barrett, director of consumer analytics, Parks Associates.

Brett Sappington, director of research at Parks Associates added: “Companies in the television industry are experimenting with several approaches to TV-related apps for mobile devices. Some are already noting several benefits, including greater viewer immersion, the ability to appeal to viewers outside of the broadcast window, and new aspects to storytelling. However, the most important implication may be for advertising. As consumers increasingly tune into mobile devices during commercial breaks, these apps provide a way to keep viewer attention

    Microsoft takes tablet hit
    July 20, 2013

Microsoft’s quarterly earnings missed analyst estimates as the firm took a US$900 million (€690 million) hit from poor sales of its Surface RT tablet.

Microsoft said the charge related to “inventory adjustments” for the device in the three months ending June 30 had a US$0.07 negative impact to diluted earnings per share.

However, its Entertainment and Devices Division – which includes Microsoft’s Xbox games console and Xbox Live entertainment service – did well, with revenues growing 8% in the fiscal fourth quarter.

“Xbox Live transaction revenue grew nearly 20% and is providing economic opportunities for publishers in this soft console market” said Microsoft general manager of investor relations, Chris Suh, on the firm’s earnings call.

Overall, the firm’s revenues for the quarter came in at US$19.9 billion, up 10% year-over-year, but below Bloomberg estimates of US$20.7 billion. Profits were US$0.59 per share, compared to a US$0.06 loss last year, but were also short of expectations.

“While our fourth quarter results were impacted by the decline in the PC market, we continue to see strong demand for our enterprise and cloud offerings, resulting in a record unearned revenue balance this quarter. We also saw increasing consumer demand for services like Office 365, Outlook.com, Skype, and Xbox LIVE,” said Amy Hood, chief financial officer at Microsoft.

CEO Steve Ballmer added: “We are working hard to deliver compelling new devices and high value experiences from Microsoft and our partners in the coming months, including new Windows 8.1 tablets and PCs.”

“Our new products and the strategic realignment we announced last week position us well for long-term success, as we focus our energy and resources on creating a family of devices and services for individuals and businesses that empower people around the globe at home, at work and on the go, for the activities they value the most,” he said.

    YuppTV goes OTT to PlayStation3
    Editor | 20-07-2013
The YuppTV over the top (OTT) service has been ported to the PlayStation3 game platform.
YuppTV claims to be the world’s largest Internet TV provider and provides a white-label platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solution that enables content owners, broadcasters, telecom and mobile operators to deliver live TV and VOD content over the various channels.
The service already enables viewers to watch more than 150 live Indian TV channels plus video on demand (VOD) content through multiple connected devices such as PCs, connected TVs, smart Blu-Ray players, set top boxes, smartphones, tablets and dongles. Having a PS3 play is regarded as something of a coup.
“We are extremely pleased to make YuppTV available to PlayStation 3 owners in the US. Our on-demand service offers the largest movie portfolio with major production houses," commented Uday Reddy of YuppTV. "YuppTV on PlayStation3 will further our momentum in the US market and will help us solidify our position as the number one destination for Indian programming.
"Making YuppTV’s programming available on the PlayStation 3 will also provide an opportunity for broadcasters and content providers to reach millions of households instantly. Production companies have the ability to release movies in the US on the same day of theatrical release, thereby ensuring that fans can enjoy this new content in the comfort of their living room.”

Time Warner hits out at CBS in retrans row
    Joseph O'Halloran | 21-07-2013
In the latest of a series of retrans rows that are becoming as predictable as Groundhog Day, Time Warner Cable has hit out at CBS, and in particular CEO Les Moonves, over what it calls an unprecedented and unreasonable hike in charges.
No wonder: TWC is claiming that CBS is charging 600% more than the cableco pays in other areas from coast to coast for the same programming.
Digging in its heels, TWC said that it was unreasonable to expect the company, and ultimately subscribers, to pay such an increase.
In a statement explaining its position, TWC said: "We are negotiating very hard for a reasonable price. This is not a standard debate over price increases; this is different. CBS’s demand for a 600% premium is unprecedented. Broadcasters have already hit customers with 84 broadcaster blackouts in the past 18 months. Les Moonves, President and CEO of CBS, has always been outspoken about the programming fees he believes he deserves. He has said 'the sky is the limit' when talking about the price he thinks he deserves for his CBS stations, and he clearly means it. He doesn’t seem to care about our customers’ budgets or the going rates for CBS programming."
Outlining its position, TWC added that it was going to continue to negotiate and hopes to come to a reasonable resolution before the nuclear option is taken by CBS - that is, a broadcaster blackout.
Weighing up the respective positions in the battle, well-respected US media analyst Richard Greenfield of BTIG remarked that TWC was justified to 'go to war' against CBS. Commenting on not just this latest battle but the thorny subject of retrans, he added: "We do not believe the government intended for retrans to be used as a brutal weapon by broadcasters against near helpless multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs), but that is essentially what has happened over the past several years... Normally, we would expect Time Warner Cable to get crushed in negotiations with CBS. However, the more we think through the situation, the more we believe this could be the perfect opportunity for Time Warner Cable to take a hard stand against CBS to change the future of retrans.
"This is the first time we have ever felt that an MVPD was justified in going to war against a broadcaster. We believe the leverage in this battle is far more balanced than in past retrans/programming disputes and CBS would be making a critical mistake to think it had an overwhelmingly strong negotiating position."

Ofcom launches consultation on broadcast licence breach
    Editor | 21-07-2013

On the heels of imposing a swingeing fine on a broadcaster flagrantly breaking its rules, UK broadcast regulator Ofcom has launched a consultation on how it deals with such matters.
The regulator proposes to publish its procedures when investigating possible breaches of broadcast licences. It has already published various specific procedures for investigating particular types of breaches, but concedes that there are currently no published procedures which cover how it investigates breaches of licence conditions generally, especially where they are not covered by one of the specific procedures. The purpose of the consultation is to seek stakeholders’ views on the proposed General Procedures.
The proposed procedures cover the investigation of breaches of licence conditions that are not already covered by published procedures for specific types of breaches. These include requirements to pay fees, broadcast certain types of content - for example programming quotas -and to comply with various Ofcom codes including issues such as code on TV access services.
Ofcom says the move is intended to formalise procedures and ensure transparency, consistency and fairness in decision making; and to provide clarity to stakeholders on the procedures that the regulator will usually follow when conducting investigations.
