Time Warner Cable selected for Hispanic TV leadership award
    Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 18-07-2013
Time Warner Cable (TWC), the second largest cable TV provider in the United States with more than 15 million customers in 29 states, has been selected to receive the 2013 Award for Leadership in Hispanic Television.
Melinda Witmer, the cable MSO's executive vice president and chief video and content officer, will accept the honour on behalf of Time Warner Cable's 53,000 employees. The award will be presented to Witmer at the 11th Annual Hispanic Television Summit on 2 October.
Each year, one corporation or organisation is selected to receive this award in recognition of that company's outstanding contributions in service to Hispanic television audiences. Time Warner Cable was selected for its line-up of Hispanic programming choices, Hispanic marketing efforts, bilingual customer service, community outreach and its diverse ranks of employees. Time Warner Cable also owns and operates NY1 Noticias in New York City and the nation's first Spanish-language Regional Sports Network, Time Warner Cable Deportes.
"With this year's event theme as 'Exploring the Exploding Hispanic Television Business,' we're especially honoured to award Time Warner Cable for its dedication to the Hispanic market," said Louis Hillelson, vice president and group publisher of Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News, which presents the award. "We're equally honoured to have Melinda Witmer, Time Warner's programming chief, accept this award on the company's behalf, since she and her team are dedicated to meeting the viewing needs of the rapidly growing Hispanic audience."

ARRIS launches converged edge router for cable MSO infrastructure
    Michelle Clancy | 18-07-2013
ARRIS Group has launched its E6000 Converged Edge Router (CER). Like the company's C4 Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS), the E6000 CER converges the delivery of high speed data, voice and video service delivery from a single connector.
The general availability launch follows the completion of a multi-phased E6000 CER customer trial programme, which included several operator locations and tens of thousands of live subscribers. ARRIS has also finalised its manufacturing ramp process for the E6000 CER.
"We're excited to declare the general availability of the E6000 CER," said Bruce McClelland, president of network and cloud global services at ARRIS. "Operators today are benefiting from the unrivalled efficiencies of the E6000 CER – in rack space, power consumption, cooling, advanced services and new applications."
In addition, the E6000 CER employs an integrated architecture rather than relying on a complex modular platform. The E6000 CER active components can be upgraded via software to stay current with changing service demands without new hardware, so service providers now have increased flexibility to customise channel allocation without service interruptions and physically re-cabling the headend.
"The E6000 CER software is based on that of the C4 CMTS, which enables seamless deployments," said McClelland. "Cable operators who deploy IPv6 with the E6000 will benefit from years of operational IPv6 experience gained with the C4 CMTS and from an unprecedented level of service group and channel density, both upstream and downstream."

ZigBee set to explode for STB remotes
    Michelle Clancy | 18-07-2013
While today's largest segment for the ZigBee is smart meters, with unit shipments of more than 30 million last year, MRG Research expects ZigBee in set-top box remote controls to be the largest segment for the technology by 2017, with more than 120 million units.
ZigBee and the Internet of Things have been associated with one another for a number of years, but the wireless standard for short-distance peer-to-peer networking always been on the horizon of things to come. According to MRG, that is no longer so with the advent of home control services from cable and satellite providers. ZigBee will be the beneficiary of this new paradigm, with a multitude of providers turning to the standard for their home control services.
The immediate impact to ZigBee is the shift of providers to select ZigBee RF4CE as the connectivity standard for set-top box remote controls, laying the foundation for a much larger ZigBee network in the home, the firm said.
Meanwhile, ZigBee faces stiff competition from other RF technologies like Bluetooth and low power Wi-Fi in other devices, such as smartphones and tablets, and TV remote controls, respectively.
"ZigBee vendors will definitely benefit from home control and remote controls," the firm said. "Overall, MRG feels that each of these technologies has found its niche based on different pricing and capabilities. Control, whether for home automation or the ubiquitous set-top box, will be ZigBee's."

Apple, Google said to be mulling new TV plans
    Michelle Clancy | 18-07-2013
According to reports, Apple and Google are both considering new online television moves.
Apple, according to former Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin, is in talks with media companies to roll out a premium subscription service that would allow consumers to skip over ads. Google, meanwhile, wants to create an equivalent of a traditional linear cable package to deliver in an over-the-top (OTT) model.
Apple reportedly plans to pay TV networks and distributors for the lost revenue. JessicaLessin.com noted that a patent Apple was granted last year covers "technology that could swap in a different stream of video during a commercial break" – i.e. ad skipping or commercial hijacking.
DISH Network offers ad-skipping via the AutoHop commercial-skipping feature for catch-up TV. The ad-skipping capability is available for the Hopper whole-home HD DVR system and works on primetime HD programmes shown on ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC when viewed the day after airing. It has fended off several lawsuits from broadcasters over the feature.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Google wants users to have access to all the channels and typical user experience as a standard cable or IPTV package, including the ability to flip through a programming guide and linear channels, as well as on-demand content. There is no word on how Google plans to differentiate such a service from existing offerings in the market.

    4K: the prospects
    July 19, 2013 06.55 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

4K4K still has a two to three year incubation period ahead before it starts to break through from 2015 onwards.
However, according to new research from Futuresource Consulting, it is already making its presence known and is on track to become a significant technology segment.
Indeed, global 4K shipments will grow from just 62,000 units last year to 780,000 in 2012 and 22 million in 2017.
Sales will be boosted from 2015 onwards by the arrival of native 4K content and increased consumer awareness.
Although China is currently at the forefront of 4K rollout, driven by relatively low-priced sets from its major domestic brands, Futuresource expects most global TV brands to launch a range of 4K TVs by the end of this year, with North America tipped to be a key market due to strong consumer appetite for large screens.
According to Simon Bryant, head of consumer electronics at Futuresource, “LCD TV panel manufacturers and premium TV brands have been looking for the next hot trigger to accelerate flat panel replacement. 3D in the home was an attempt to achieve this and it has yet to become the solid success that many had hoped for.
“4K represents a more natural progression for the industry, but one that brings its own challenges, not least the intricacies of producing 4K panels at high yield rates and the complexities of delivering the bandwidth-hungry content. Substantial compression improvements provided by the HEVC codec will smooth the way for broadcast, and although the real-time encoding required for live transmission is still embryonic, solutions are being trialled and evaluated.”
Looking at the global TV market as a whole, Futuresource says it will return to growth in 2013 after shipments fell by 6% last year, with growth continuing until 2017. By then, annual shipments will exceed 270 million units, with emerging markets accounting for 67% of the total.

    Argentina's pay-TV audience reaches 50%
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 19-07-2013
Argentina's pay-TV sector has seen growing subscriber numbers over the first half of 2013 according to the most recent report from the Latin American advertising council Lamac.
From January to June 2013, pay-TV channels have had an average audience share of 50%, continuing the trend of a reduction in free-to-air viewers, which was already noticeable last year.
Lamac's report points to the huge growth in pay-TV audiences since 2006, especially in the Buenos Aires district. Since then, the free-to-air audience has dropped 31% while the pay-TV audience grew 32%.
The pay-TV platforms have been picking up the viewers from the traditional channels. Telefe and Canal 13, the leading channels in Argentina, lost 45% and 38% respectively, while the third of the ranking, Canal 9, lost 33%. América 2 grew 14% and the public Canal 7 increased its share 94%.
But these increases were not enough to absorb the fall-offs, and most of the viewers have migrated to pay-TV offers.
So the first half of the year suggests even greater growth for pay-TV in Argentina, where over ten million people currently pay for television.
