    Al Jazeera targets Mediapro
    July 12, 2013 10.48 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

al-jazeera-deskAl Jazeera is understood to be in advanced talks to buy Spain’s Mediapro.
Should it succeed, it would gain a powerful footing in the country and in particular control of the lucrative Spanish football TV rights held by the Barcelona-based company.
According to Economista, this would place it in direct competition with the financially troubled Prisa, which still holds the upper hand in terms of football TV rights ownership in Spain.
Mediapro already has a close relationship with Al Jazeera, with the former having signed several contracts with the broadcaster for the distribution of La Liga internationally.

    TeliaSonera slams Turkcell “privatisation”
    July 12, 2013 07.36 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

TurkcellTeliaSonera has strongly criticised plans by the Turkish government to effectively take over the running of Turkcell.
Quoted by the Financial Times, Vahdettin Ertas, chairman of Turkey’s Capital Market Board, said that continued disagreements between Turkcell’s main shareholders left it with no option but to appoint two more directors to its seven-member board.
This would give it a majority in a move TeliaSonera sees as a nationalisation.
Earlier this week it was reported that the UK’s Privy Council had ruled in favour of the Cukurova Group in its dispute over the ownership of Turkcell with Russia’s Alfa Group.

    Prisa eyes Chapter 11
    July 12, 2013 07.32 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

PrisaSpain’s Prisa is considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US.
Quoting several unnamed sources, NASDAQ and Dow Jones Business News says that the possible move comes as the company, whose interests include the leading DTH platform Digital+, is struggling with debts of around $3 billion (€2.3 billion).
Several options currently seem open to Prisa, with some of its creditors, who include Silver Point Capital LP, Monarch Alternative Capital LP, Knighthead Capital Management LLC and Davidson Kempner Capital Management LLC, having recently joined forces to negotiate a possible restructuring.
Prisa may also split its assets and sell off some of the underperforming ones.
Digital+, for instance, has already been on the market for some time and last month it was reported that Prisa was in talks with Telefónica to sell its 56% stake in the platform for €900 million.
Telefónica currently owns 22% of Digital+ and looks the most likely buyer, though others, including News Corp, remain in the picture.

IneaThe Polish cable operator Inea will launch the country’s first TV channel dedicated to a football club within the next three months.
Known as Lech TV, it will promote Lech Poznan and have a format similar to that used by such channels in Western Europe.
On air for at least 14 hours daily, with 1-2 hours of new programming each day, Lech TV will not be distributed over the internet but as a digital channel in Inea’s standard package, which is currently received by around 100,000 subscribers in the Wielkopolska region of Poland.
Alongside Lech TV, Inea has become Lech Poznan’s ‘premium’ sponsor for the next five-years, with the possibility of extending this period for several more years.

Latin American market brings growth to Hispasat
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12-07-2013
Hispasat has announced its results for 2012, a year in which the satellite company invoiced over €200 million and grew 6.85% compared to 2011.
"This growth has only been possible thanks to our leadership in the Latin America satellite market, in which our position has been reinforced in 2012 by launching a new mission and keeping our investments," said Elena Pisonero, Hispasat's president.
In 2012, the Spanish company finished the construction of Amazonas 3, which was launched last February. It's the first satellite in the region with K-band and aims to extend the Internet to the whole region. Through the satellite, and as a celebration of its launch, Hispasat broadcast in Ultra HDTV 4K for the first time in Latin America.
"EBITDA was €161 million, 4.15% more than 2011 and our EBITDA margin is over 80%, which means that Hispasat is one of the most efficient satellite companies in the world," explained Pisonero.
The company has also unveiled some of its future plans. Hispasat will keep the development projects of the satellites AG1 and 1F and has begun a new mission to meet the increasing demand in Latin America. A large proportion of telcos operating in the region have already migrated their services to Amazonas 3 and Hispasat is getting ready to launch Amazonas 4A and 4B.

Al Jazeera aims to buy Spanish football rights
    Juan Fernandez Gonzalez | 12-07-2013
Al Jazeera is said to be interested in buying the TV rights for La Liga and is currently negotiating with Mediapro which owns the broadcasting rights for most Spanish football teams, including Barcelona and Real Madrid.
According to El Economista, Al Jazeera is on the verge of sealing the deal with the Catalan group. The Arab multinational has been trying to consolidate its presence in European football, and it has already purchased some of the football rights in other countries.
A deal like this has no precedent in Spain's audiovisual market. Al Jazeera would directly own the rights of most of the teams. The Qatar-based company would commercially use the matches internationally as well as in Spain, for DTT, pay-TV and online TV.
The football market situation is favourable for an operation like this. Despite being one of the most profitable championships in Europe, Prisa is having trouble managing La Liga broadcasting rights and Prisa TV closed 2012 with a fall of nearly €300 million. Due to a conflict with Mediapro, which owns the team's rights but not the competition rights, and the delicate financial situation of the company, the context for the sale is clearly favourable for Al Jazeera.
Mediapro and Al Jazeera have always had a profitable relationship. Al Jazeera has been operating the rights of several Spanish teams internationally and both companies have produced content together.

Korean OTT social TV site Viki looks to Latin America
    Parent Category: News | 12-07-2013
Social TV site Viki has released a Spanish version to focus on Latin America.
The Korean OTT platform has also created new categories in the service in order to include the favourite genres of the Latin American audience. The Telenovela section includes series from Colombia's Caracol TV and Venezuela's Venevisión.
The soap opera programming is aimed at Latin American audiences, but will also be available for the wider community of soap fans worldwide, as Viki is already working in Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia.
Viki announced that its audience has been growing in Latin America during the past years and accounts for a quarter of its monthly audience. The community of viewers is strongest in Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru.
"Over 90% of our Latin American audience uses Viki to watch popular international movies and international TV programmes that cannot be watched in any other place, and now we can introduce soap operas to the world," explained Viki's manager for America, Tammy H Nam.
Since Viki was launched at the end of 2010 it has increased in popularity and now reaches millions of users. The OTT platform is a clear example of how new markets can be opened for traditional television through online solutions.
BBC Worldwide and Greylock Partners are among the company's investors.

France Télévisions, French State agree on objectives
    Pascale Paoli-Lebailly | 12-07-2013
French pubcaster France Télévisions (FTV) and the French State have agreed to an additional clause to the 2013-2015 objectives and means contract through which the group's targets will be examined and, if necessary, revised, owing to the economic climate.
FTV's finances have been significantly reduced owing to the fall in provisional resources, including a drop by €8 million in ad revenues over the first six months of 2013.
The State's investment into France Télévisions will also be reduced by €85 million this year.
France Télévisions' president Rémy Pflmilin has also been assured that the €50 million bonus coming from the €2 increase in the licence fee will go to France Télévisions during the contract period.
FTV's mission over the next two years is to maintain its diverse news offering, sports FTA offering, and digital development strategy and finance French productions. The group has also engaged in reorienting the DTT channel France 4 towards the youth and young adult demos.
