Tablets, smartphones more popular than smart TVs for video
    Joseph O'Halloran | 09-07-2013

When it comes to connected devices, the big screen is not such a big draw compared with smartphones and tablets new research from Strategy Analytics has revealed.
The findings from Online Video Lead Adopters Bypass the Smart TV with Personal Devices, found that even though half of the sample had acquired a smart TV over the past three years, no one was found to be using it as their main source for connected media entertainment. By contrast, the sample reported that they found tablets, smartphones and other connected TV devices easier to use.
The study suggests that while traditional TV will continue to play a key role in domestic lifestyles, people will increasingly rely on the convenience of personal devices and over the top (OTT) TV/video services to support their entertainment needs. More worryingly for the connected TV industry, those early adopters who had not purchased a smart TV yet were concerned that these products were not ready to deliver an adequate experience, and were happy to continue using other connected devices instead.
“OEMs and app developers are failing to provide smart TV users with apps and services that enhance the TV experience," commented Taryn Tulay, Senior Analyst in the User Experience Practice. "Furthermore, an intuitive remote that works fluidly with the UI and provides ease of text input with an integrated touchscreen is imperative to consumers finding the apps and services functional on a TV"

BRICs add foundation to pay-TV as IPTV upstarts take share from incumbents
    Joseph O'Halloran | 09-07-2013
A new report from Infonetics has shown that strong momentum mostly in BRIC countries has seen pay-TV revenue and subscribers compensate for mounting cable subscriber losses in North America and Western Europe.
In its two latest reports, Pay-TV Subscriber Database and Pay-TV Services and Subscribers, Infonetics showed that cable, satellite and telco/IPTV pay-TV providers took in $287 billion worldwide in 2012, up 10% year on year, and pay-TV subscribers reached 730 million in 2012, up 7% from the previous year.
Satellite provider DirecTV and cableco Comcast were found to be the clear pay-TV leaders with the former boasting the highest ARPU, while Comcast owning the most subscribers.
The research also revealed that 2012 saw a tipping point with digital cable pay-TV subscribers outnumbering analogue subscribers for the first time. Yet Even though cable maintained its lion’s share of revenues, this situation is predicted to change by 2017 when satellite grows to more than 40% of total pay-TV revenues.
Telco/ IPTV revenue was found to be growing fastest among the leading platforms at a CAGR of 19% through 2017 with a lot of growth in Brazil, Russia, India and China. Indeed, the analyst added that thanks to strong momentum mostly in these regions, pay-TV revenue and subscribers continue to grow in the face of mounting cable subscriber losses in North America and Western Europe, where it warns pay-TV providers are in danger of being relegated to the role of content aggregator.
“We continue to see strong growth among telco IPTV upstarts, like Rostelecom in Russia, GVT in Brazil, KPN in the Netherlands and providers in Eastern Europe where competition for new pay-TV subscribers is particularly fierce," revealed Jeff Heynen, principal analyst for broadband access and pay TV at Infonetics Research.
“Telcos in both emerging and mature markets can do well, even when the market is saturated with cable and satellite providers. To stem the subscriber losses incumbent MSOs including Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and UPC are introducing new services, like home automation and multiscreen video to reduce subscriber churn and generate top-line revenue growth, in addition to deploying new technologies to lower the Capex required to deliver broadcast video.”

Verizon launches Live Events division for pay TV and OTT
    Parent Category: News | 09-07-2013
Verizon Digital Media Services has launched Verizon Live Events, targeted at broadcasters, studios, content retailers and multichannel video programming distributors looking to bring live events to TV and online video services.
The service joins the video-on-demand and linear channel services also offered by the telco.
Through an exclusive agreement with video-streaming company Origin Digital, Live Events can acquire event feeds from any source -- including satellite, terrestrial fiber and Internet -- then transcode and deliver the content to broadcasters and other commercial customers. The service also provides proactive monitoring and robust redundancy over Verizon’s global network.
“There are no second chances when it comes to live events,” said Bob Toohey, president of Verizon Digital Media Services. “Verizon Live Events combines depth of experience, market-leading technology and exceptional reach to create memorable experiences for viewers watching their favourite live events. This combination offers a single solution for a wide range of live events -- from multinational sporting events to breaking news and business meetings to concerts and red-carpet premieres.”

    Italian market takes a hit
    July 9, 2013 18.01 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Italian telecom sector had revenues of €61.4 billion in 2012, down from €65.8 billion a year earlier, according to the latest AgCom (2013) annual report.
This, the report states, was due to the country’s shrinking economy and the decline in advertising revenue.
Media companies as whole saw their revenues decline year-by-year in 2012 to €15.7 billion.
Sky Italy was the leading broadcaster in revenue terms, claiming €2.63 billion, or 1.4% less than a year earlier.
Mediaset, on the other hand, posted €2.48 billion, down 13.2% on 2011.
The public broadcaster Rai was the leading broadcaster when considering only FTA services, its 48.3% share contrasting with Mediaset’s 38.9%.
Commenting on the decline in the telecom market’s revenues, Andrea Zappia, CEO of Sky Italia, said: “We operate in a single entertainment market in which all the operators are competing for the various resources available on all platforms – subscriptions, advertising, content and most of all the viewer’s attention. The industry is going through pivotal changes, with the continuous arrival of new entrants, therefore we need to have the courage to look at it from a long-term perspective. We need new rules, the same rules for all, based on a technologically neutral approach that puts the client at the centre”
With regards to Sky’s performance, he added: “Sky was rewarded by his subscribers for its investments in both technology and content despite the difficult economic situation. Investments that support the Italian audio-visual industry along with the country’s talent and creativity”.
