    Southwest rolls out in-flight TV
    Michelle Clancy | 08-07-2013
Southwest Airlines has begun the rollout of its in-flight TV, which is pushed to a user’s smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi.
The content is a mix of live TV and up to 75 on-demand shows, and is offered for free “for a limited time,” the airline said, thanks to a promotion from DISH Network. As part of the agreement, DISH announced a promotion for new DISH customers signing up for the Hopper Whole Home DVR and a qualified programming package, offering 12,500 points in Southwest’s Rapid Rewards frequent flyer program and the choice to receive an iPad 2.
The live-TV lineup currently features Bravo, CNBC, FOX 5 New York (WNYW), FOX Business Network, FOX News Channel, Golf Channel, MLB.com (Major League Baseball, when games are available), MSNBC, NBC 4 (WNBC), NFL Network, Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel.
“DISH and Southwest are two iconic American brands known for putting the customer first, providing products, services and experiences they truly demand,” said DISH president and CEO Joe Clayton. “It’s only logical our two companies should team up to give passengers free live TV and on-demand shows on flights around the country.”
Clayton added: “Customers using DISH’s award-winning DISH Anywhere and Hopper Transfers apps on their iPad can watch all their live TV, DVR recordings and on-demand shows anywhere, anytime via Wi-Fi connection or Hopper Transfers. Now, on Southwest, they can use an iPad to watch free live TV and on-demand shows. It’s a perfect fit.”

Cuba gets its first MLB game in more than half a century
    Gabriel Miramar-Garcia | 08-07-2013
Major League Baseball came to Cuba for the first time since 1961 last Sunday, with a surprise replay of the weeks-old 2 May game between the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves.
The 3-1 Nationals win was broadcast across the island’s over-the-air network, with the commercials removed. According to the AP, Cuban commentators offered play-by-play over the original English transmission, which was faded out.
While islanders are notoriously baseball-obsessed, they find themselves relying on smuggled press accounts and word of mouth to keep up with the MLB and Cubano stars like Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Aroldis Chapman of the Cincinnati Reds.
But the lack of hometown heroes on either team underwhelmed, despite the milestone nature of the broadcast. "It’s interesting to see how they play, but I can’t say it thrilled me all that much because I don’t know any of the players," resident Diego Sierra told the AP. "I would really like to see the Cubans, see how they are developing in that league, really see how well they are doing."
